Happy friday! For justice/Hawke: “if they touch a hair on his/her/their/your head…” 

Thanks for the prompt! I've been wanting to explore Mal and Justice's relationship a bit for awhile and I think I've settled on their dynamic thanks to this! For @dadrunkwriting

My Hawke in this one is Mal, who uses he/him pronouns.

This battle isn’t going as well as Mal hoped it would. The damn blood mages keep attacking and show no signs of stopping, throwing spell after spell at Mal’s shield to the point where he can hear the wood crack and splinter. He’s overwhelmed by the onslaught and he knows this isn’t a fight they’re going to win. 

“We need to back down and regroup!” he calls over the sound of explosions and the growl of demons. 

“We should not let them get away!” Fenris argues as he slashes through a shade, sending it crumpling to dust. 

“Look around, broody!” Varric says as he shoots bolt after bolt into the enemies around them. “We’ve already lost this round.” 

Before Mal can respond, a particularly strong spell hits his shield and breaks it in half, one piece smacking him in the head and sending him tumbling to the ground. 

“Hawke!” Anders’ voice rings out clear despite the commotion going on around them. 

Mal has just enough time to see a mage point their staff directly at his chest before there’s a burst of blue and Anders is standing in front of him. 

“If you touch a hair on his head, it will be the last thing you ever do!” That isn’t Anders’ voice coming from that body, but Justice’s. Strong and sure and with an edge of something otherworldly. 

“An abomination!” The blood mage shrieks. “You will not–”

But before they can say another word, Justice is on them. Mal can’t make out the details, but there’s a lot of screaming and a lot of blood. 

Mal struggles to his feet as the rest of the mages disperse at Justice’s display of violence. Mal holds his sword at the ready in case the spirit decides to turn its desire for bloodshed on him next. 

“Well. That sure was something,” Varric says once the last of the shades are dealt with. 

Justice stands still, coated in blood from head to toe. His eyes maintain that blue glow that shows that Anders hasn’t yet taken back control. He turns to face Mal, eyes still glowing and face passive. 

“Don’t take one step, demon,” Mal warns, leveling his sword directly over Justice’s heart. He wouldn’t actually follow through on such a deadly blow, but Justice doesn’t need to know that. 

Justice tilts his head. “I saved you,” he says. “I did not wish you harmed.”

“Anders didn’t want me hurt,” Mal corrects with a sneer. “Back down and let him through.” 

“Is it so difficult to believe I am capable of care?” 

“I said let Anders take back control!” 

Justice lets out a heavy sigh. “You are part of the reason Anders fears me now. You and people like you.” There’s a hint of something sad in his tone — a trick, as spirits are incapable of feeling sadness. “Very well. I shall go.” 

The blue dissipates and Anders stands where Justice once did, clutching his head and looking a bit delirious. 

“Anders, are you alright?” Mal lowers his sword. 

Anders nods. “I’m fine, love. Thank you. I– I’m sorry for letting him take control.”

Mal sheaths his sword and takes several steps towards his lover, putting a hand on his shoulder to stabilize him. “It isn’t your fault. I know how hard it is to control him.”

An expression Mal can’t read flickers across Anders’ face. “I– right. Yes.” 

“Come on. Let’s get you home.” Mal can’t shake the feeling that there’s more that Anders wants to say, but what more is there to be said?

Anders: Are you sure you don’t have a problem with your lover literally sharing his body with an inhuman spirit from another world? Who may or may not be turning into a demon? Doesn’t it bother you that he will inevitably be a part of our relationship, since he and I are inextricable?
