Art Blakey and the Jazz Messenger’s “A Night in Tunisia” was recorded on August 7 and 14, 1960 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #ArtBlakey on drums, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #WayneShorter on tenor, #BobbyTimmons on piano and #JymieMerritt on bass. Backed by some of the best young talent in the business at that time gave Blakey the opportunity to show case their talent by given them room to extend their solos and show case their writing talent as well. All but the title tune was written and arranged by this talented group. This @musicmattersjazz reissue is from their famous SRX Series original set that was released in 2019. I wish #MusicMattersJazz would revisit this series and release another set of 12 or @BlueNoteRecords start their own SRX series because these classic titles deserve the love. There shouldn’t be only 200 copies available for these classics in this format. Their Classic Series should be converted into this SRX series and given the same treatment as their Tone Poet Series. The album starts off with Dizzy’s “A Night in Tunisia” the title tune and to me the best rendition I’ve heard of this classic with Shorter’s opening solo accompanied by Timmons makes you wonder what Dizzy was envisioning of this special night in this special North African place. The rest of the album doesn’t let up. I think this is one of the best sessions for this particular Messenger group. I know some would say “Moanin’”, but Shorter wasn’t on Moanin’.
