i have a headcanon that k unit were never actually sas
alex was sent to brecon beacons, not for any kind of training, but to test his endurance and mental strength. in sas, the soldiers are all already trained and have been in the army for at least three years. they are at the peak of their military careers. they know all the basics there is to know.
there was no doubt that alex had the physical aptitude to be a spy, but dealing with espionage when youre under insane mental pressure with nobody to support you—people bullying you and degrading you even—is a whole other level. in addition to being blackmailed into the whole thing. would he spill classified information? that was what k unit was there to find out.
in addition, there is no way ben daniels could have gone from an sas recruit to senior mi6 agent in like,,, 2 day in order for him to meet alex again in snakehead (ahorz timelines really leave much to be desired😭)
k unit may have been in the army once, even the sas at one point, but they all found their way to military intelligence eventually and were sent to see if alex was up for the task
I love how while only 3 series into Alex Rider TV we really see the jaded, angry Alex we get by the end of the entire book series. The realities of a child spy are much more obvious in the show and something I really enjoy seeing explored
There's such a unique special vibe about Alex Rider season 1. I love seasons 2 and 3 and everything they gave us so much but season 1 works as a standalone also and just has such nostalgia.
It's unusual because it's point blanc - there's literal clones. The vibe the whole season gives is like a thriller or mystery - it's eerie and it's creepy as well as being Alex Rider.
Plus, the side characters : you've got k-unit who establish themselves strongly and are recurring in-season then you've also, very importantly, got the point blanc kids. The point blanc squad is something else. It's season 1 so you get attached to them all (the ones that aren't clones already at least) and you emphasise with them and it's Alex Rider but also not just Alex Rider, you're in it with all of them. That's why it works so well that Kyra comes back, you just lose the others on the way 😢 they went through something together, something terrifying and it bonded them and it changed them.
I'm not sure if anyone else gets what I mean but S1 feels like the same show but different. Point blanc is like this other universe - and it fits well and it works but it's also like a whole psychological thriller wrapped up underneath
I love the pbers and miss the vibes Laura, James and Alex as a trio brought 🥺 I also miss k-unit. They introduced so many brilliant characters in s1
Hey Alex Rider fandom, hope we’re still alive and kicking (maybe even growing with two seasons of the show having been released).
As someone totally hyperfixated on the books and the show, I just wanted to make my presence known. If anyone wants to discuss things with me, request things for me to put my thoughts and analysis out there, or give fanfic prompts or ideas (crossover or otherwise, as long as I’m familiar and they’re Alex-centric) I’m all ears. By all means, request away.
Whump community-please rise and let your wishes be heard!
Just no self inserts/reader inserts or OCs! I can’t do it, I’m sorry!
I look forward to our interactions, seriously, unleash your crazy ideas and asks.
What I enjoy most about the Alex Rider TV series so far: great friendship and found family moments. It's a treasure.
