when sejeong's filming ends, vanessa doesn't want to necessarily say she was excited that it was over. she's happy for sejeong and her personal schedules, really. but she missed the girl when she wasn't around-- and having her around more now that she's finished puts vanessa in such a happy mood as of late. on her way back to the dorm from some extra training, she picks up a few light snacks and a couple of sweet treats for the girls at the convenience store. when she returns back to the dorm, she puts most of the snacks on the table and the sweet treats in the fridge, humming as she does so. taking a few of the bags of goodies, she sets out to find sejeong.
when she does find her, vanessa pauses for a moment to look at her with a smile, ebfore clearing her throat for attention. "sejeonggie~" she sing songs, lifting one of the bags and wiggling it for gesture. "i got us a few things to do a mini-celebratory welcome back to us~" it sounds as though sejeong has been gone for much longer than she has, but vanessa is dramatic. that's what makes her fun. "want a treat?"
a month had passed and hyuna still found it hard to believe they were given a song already, both lyrics and choreography to learn and perfect. even with trc throwing her into something rather new, she still thinks there is far more she can learn about the girls. so she asked sejeong, her roommate, if she’d like to play a little game to get to know each other. it’s from back when hyuna was in england, the quick 20 questions game, which you take turns to ask each other a question to get to know the other person better.
“whats your favorite movie?“ she asks, sat on her bed with her knees pulled to her chest. it’s already quite late after they had finished training, but it was nice. having such a basic chat with one another, even with hyuna’s insomnia tendencies, she’s glad sejeong agreed to play this mini game. she probably would end up playing with the rest of the k.arma girls at some point. it made her ever so excited to get to know them, knowing their comeback was around the corner.
vanessa has been playing with the idea of getting a new song for k.arma the moment ticket promotions ended. she likes performing, likes doing something in k.arma. the weeks and months of just...preparation or practicing have been hard, especially with sana's departure and now hyuna's addition. it's for the better of k.arma, so trc says, so vanessa will accept that.
dolls is...it's fun. it's not the type of sound she thought she would end up doing, but it fits in a way, with k.arma as a whole-- a sound catered to them. it's got a somewhat of a lengthy rap too, good for both yeeun and hyuna, so it makes vanessa a bit more comfortable with the idea of a change. trc's got it's plans, hopefully for the better of k.arma-- so she'll trust in them currently to keep doing....what's hopefully the right thing.
hopefully.
the dance is pretty; graceful, in a way. it's a song with a tune she hums at the dorms between resting periods, a tune she's humming when they're eating. it's hard to not get the song stuck in her head when they're continuously practicing it day in and day out. her parts are easy, singing comes easy, so she focuses more of her time in learning the dance. she's still not the best dancer, though improvement has been made since the project months ago-- the scathing words still resonate in her mind with every movement of her limbs, every practice of footwork. vanessa knows what she excels in and what she doesn't-- so she spends a bit more time fine tuning it. it's hard to get her feet to move properly and also keep up with whats going on with her upper body at the same time.
it's tiresome, sure. but it leaves her feeling a bit more excited about the next day, and the day after that. passing time and tired bones means one step closer to their comeback, so she'll endure it.
the amount of excitement she had to be the model for sprite was immeasurable. she always wanted to be the face of sprite. it was mostly because the sprite water bomb festival was so fun. it’s a little too cold for that but she hopes it means that her contract would be up until the festival itself. she wanted to do well so that they would ask for her to take many photos. wouldn’t be cool if the whole group got to feature as well?
she wanted to do well. it’s been a while since she’s done a high profile photoshoot (running on 3 years now). she suddenly feels rusty. she hasn’t even stepped into the building yet and she felt like she needed practise runs. but there was no practise runs when it came to modelling. they couldn’t afford to have bad takes. they needed to get the shot so she had to work out her qualms silently.
while the stylist is doing her hair, she’s trying to work on her facials. she can’t really move her head without annoying the person doing her hair so she works on her expressions. should she do more sexy? or joyful? something that’s true to her image? maybe they’d ask for a variety of poses and just go from there.
it was weird putting on more summer wear when it was still winter. sometimes it wasn’t even warm enough to go outside without a jacket. but here sohee was in a studio wearing a bodysuit and shorts, looking cute and summery for the camera. it reminds her what she loves about modelling: sometimes you can pretend to be an entirely different person. right now, it’s summer in february. and sohee was going to sell it.
she thanks everyone for their hard work when they’re done, bowing deeply to the crew that made her look so beautiful. they hand her two cases of sprite to bring home to her dorm. because they were gifts, she needn’t hide them away for her diet’s sake. she was excited to get back and share with the others.
──── k.arma february 2020 schedule ╳ practicing the choreography ❞
she smiles the entire time the choreography was introduced to them. it was already established that she quite likes their new song, especially because of how upbeat it appears to be in comparison to their former releases. it was a nice change, especially given that the lyrics of the song hints at how someone recovers after a relationship ends. the lyrics might seem somewhat mellow, but the funky beats were anything but.
she sits on the floor of the practice room, alone, and with her phone pulled close to her eyes. she’s watching the video of their choreography on repeat, analysing what needs to be given more attention over the others. right off the bat, joy knows that this is going to be easy. if she gives it enough time and dedication, she can finish memorising their dance in just less than a day. knowing her, it won’t be a challenge to get lost in the haze of dancing like that. sometimes, she doesn’t even realise that so much time has passed whenever she’s so engrossed in what she’s practicing.
there are times when she worries that she’s not challenged enough and that because of that, she’ll lose her skill. their choreographies were never complicated; often easy that she can dance it even while in her sleep. at this point it should be fine for her to admit that the undemanding movements does have the tendency to be a little bit boring. she’ll never say it out loud, of course. she just hopes that her love for being on stage would prevent her from showing what she feels about their dances.
after roughly an hour and a half of diligently watching the video, she feels that she’s ready to stand and start moving. she positions herself in the middle, arms bent in a ninety degree angle by her hips as the first few notes of the song filters through the speaker. when the beat drops, she follows roughly what she sees in the video that plays simultaneously. she was mirroring the video and even though she wasn’t able to hit the nail on the head on some parts, it brings her some satisfaction that she got it mostly correct. the chorus was probably the easiest as she was able to get it perfectly in just one go. as she dances the what she assumes is the ‘point’ part of their choreography, there’s a smile on her lips as she finds it really fun to do.
it was sometime before dinner when she decides she’s had enough for the day. after studying and practicing the choreography for nearly five hours, she thinks she needs a well deserved break. after all, she managed to smooth out all her initial mistakes and was content with her progress in terms of fully mastering the dance. she’s almost there but she needs to rest for the night, lest she gets too into it and ends up spending the night.
sweaty but satisfied, she leaves the practice room thinking that the two were one of the best combinations for her to feel.
──── k.arma february 2020 schedule ╳ studying the new song ❞
finally, she thinks. finally, they now have something promising to look forward to.
after being stagnant for some months, joy finds it an extreme relief that they are now officially given comeback news. suddenly, there are more things to do than just watch endless shows on various streaming sites and to scroll aimlessly on social media. now, she can think about performing on stage and not fall into an endless pit of wistful sighing wondering when it will happen again.
the music sheet clasped between her fingers make her giddy every time she looks at it. it’s the premise to their next few months filled with preparations after preparations. it’s time to get busy again and for as much as she’d enjoyed their time off, she’d rather have sleepless nights than ones where she’s scrambling to think about what to do. she’s never felt comfortable being solitary for too long. hence, it makes her the happiest now that their group is back on its feet.
she’s never been the type to think about the amount of lines that she has in their song and use that as a basis of her satisfaction. whether she’ll get much or none at all, she’s happy to just be a part of it. yet as she looks at her highlighted lines, she can’t help but feel a little happy knowing that she’s gained a few in comparison to their last releases. she hopes this means that they can see she how she has been working hard. that this is more of a product of their recognition of her efforts than anything else.
joy listens to the song on repeat, singing her lines and their joint parts whenever it arrives. it was probably too soon to admit it but dolls is sitting high on her list of favourites. she quite enjoys the sounds of the trumpet that’s prevalent throughout the entire song, making it stand out from everything else that they’ve already done.
by the end of an hour, she’s almost certain she’s got everything memorised. she finds that the task itself was relatively easy, but she knows it’ll get more challenging once it’s all seven of them present. content with her progress, she makes the move towards another practice room to familiarise herself with the choreography. now this is something she knows she can get lost in and quite frankly, she’s already looking forward to it.
this is the same yet different. its not the first time hyuna has recorded a song in a studio, with a professional monitoring her every breath. this was her debut song, this is what the public would finally hear and see, and remove the long lasting trainee status she has had. it’s just as stressful as she had imagined.
“again.“
she hears the producer say as she finishes her part. it’s not a huge chunk. hyuna didn’t hope of a big part, she will take whatever she is given. so she goes over it again, and again, and again. at some point, she doesn’t even need the sheet anymore. she’s pretty much managed to engrave the words to the back of her eyelids and brain, it was pointless to keep staring at the piece of coloured paper.
the stress eventually just disappears, once the lead rapper finally realizes that she doesn’t need to worry about making a mistake, which was rare, or being told to repeat the lines. hyuna is told to try a few different things, different flows different intonations and she does. she doesn’t input anything, not yet. there is a time and place for that and she hadn’t taken part in the making of the song, she stays out of other people’s business. after all, she was going to be a mare idol, there was a bit to go before she finally manages to get a glimpse of what it was like to be producers and play with the big boys.
still, she knew she could play with them, just a bit more time and she would.
❝
the dancing aspect wasn’t as hard as she thought it would be. sure, it was a new song, but thanks to joy, she already managed to get a grasp of what k.arma’s dances were like. this was no different. it was the same upbeat detailed choreography. however, it was a new choreography and hyuna didn’t have to take up someone’s part, she had her own and it gave it a whole different meaning.
she was excited, to say the least, they were close to actually doing the fun creative stuff, photoshoots, concepts, comeback schedule. it’s all exciting and it only makes hyuna wan’t to work harder and make sure she’s keeping up with the rest of the group. there were a few sleepless nights, where she did stay a tad too late in the trc building to practice, but it wasn’t bad.
in the end, she knew this is what she wanted and she could do it.
Now that the new lineup is settled and everyone should be getting along, it’s time to proceed with the plans for the year.
On February 3rd, a month after Hyuna joined their ranks, their coaches present them their first song of the year, ‘Dolls’. Their goal is to have a Spring comeback to go along with the feeling of the new song. Each girl will receive their own copy of the lines with theirs highlighted in different colors to learn. Even if this may be Hyuna’s first time going through comeback preparations, no slacking will be allowed—not to any of them.
A week later, on February 10th, they’ll also be introduced to the choreography of their song. The song will start with Chojin as the first center. At the end of the first chorus, Doyeon will take over as it leads into the point dance before they move away to reveal Kil.
Meanwhile, Chojin will receive some more news on February 8th about an opportunity that has been agreed on for her to become a brand ambassador for Sprite. She’ll go out on February 15th for a photoshoot to be later shared by the company. She’ll take different pictures with the product as can be seen here while wearing the brand’s key colors. She’ll get to take home some of the products to enjoy and to share not only with her friends but with her fans for promotion.
