Not gonna lie, I would absolutely devour spin off book about 15 years old current emperor Yang. Mostly because there would be so much drama going on and it would have this tragic undertone. Also his friend group was packed with my favourite characters a dao and gaoshun plus more info about lishu's mother is always welcome. Maybe we could get a glimpse of lakan and fengxian or even shi clan in full power
This exists because I was way too tired of watching the same episode over and over just to find a specific quote for fanfics.
Some descriptions of what is happening on screen may be wrong along with some incorrect grammar as this took me several days and I have no sense of consistency. And if I wasn't sure if a character was speaking out loud or thinking due to the camera angle I wrote it as them speaking.
LADY IN WAITING 1: Surely its a mistake!
We can see Jinshi and Gaoshun sitting down with Concubine Fuyou and two of her ladies in waiting.
LADY IN WAITING 2: As a reward?
FUYOU: I understand.
Concubine Fuyou quickly stands up and rushes out of the room, her ladies in waiting following her.
LADY IN WAITING 1: Lady Fuyou!
LADY IN WAITING 2: Please wait!
The scene changes to be late at night. Ominous music starts to play as we see a woman with dark hair from behind. We then see a serving girl walking down a path holding a lantern. (This serving girl is different from the one seen at the end of the previous episode). The serving girl sees the figure of a woman with long hair turn and look at her. She drops the lantern and we see the woman standing over the serving girl as she trembles with fear. The serving girl screams.
YINGHUA: Wow! So cold!
GUIYUAN: We've been living in the capital for awhile now, but these chilly mornings are still hard to get used to.
YINGHUA: Oh how I miss the sand and sunlight.
AILAN: The temperature dropped in the mornings and evenings back west.
GUIYUAN: The western capital, that seems like such a long time ago. But the lady's arrival at the palace, it feels like only yesterday.
AILAN: I forgot to say, I received some excellent news from father recently, apparently, trade from the central capital and ours has been on the rise.
GUIYUAN: Further proof the emperor loves lady Gyokuyou.
YINGHUA: It is his favorite concubines homeland, the central officers can't ignore that.
AILAN: Are you off to clean the kitchen?
AILAN: Wait for us, we'll help.
YINGHUA: Mm-m. We have to split the chores or we won't finish! We can't rely on the other servants.
AILAN: Remember how bad it was back was she was pregnant? Like that one time we found that poison needle hidden inside of her dress.
YINGHUA: It probably has to do with the fact she's a foreign princess!
GUIYUAN: That was the past. Now we have an extra lady in waiting!
Maomao is in the kitchen making something when Yinghua enters with a small bucket, used to hold water for cleaning.
YINGHUA: Maomao!
YINGHUA: You cookin' something tasty?
MAOMAO: A cold remedy.
YINGHUA: I didn't realize you could make those too.
YINGHUA (Thinking): The new lady in waiting is so talented!
Maomao reaches over to grab some herb from a bowl and her sleeve slips up, letting Yinghua see part of her bandages. Yinghua gets teary eyed and starts fretting over Maomao.
YINGHUA: Hey! You're sure you don't need anything?
YINGHUA: Are you eating?
MAOMAO: That's my job.
YINGHUA: You have any troubles tell me!
MAOMAO: You got it.
Yinghua cries a bit. Then we see Yinghua cleaning while Maomao has gone back to making her cold remedy.
YINGHUA: So, by the way, you hear? There's a new rumor going around everyone's talking about.
MAOMAO: Nope.
YINGHUA: They say there's a spirit haunting the rear palace.
MAOMAO: A spirit?
The scene abruptly changes and we see Xiaolan and Maomao sitting together, presumably in a place where the serving girls are allowed to relax. (I just have to add this note, I had to rewind a lot during this section and every time got jumpscared by Xiaolan hitting her hands against the table.)
XIAOLAN: I heard too! The ghostly lady dressed in white!
MAOMAO: Sounds like a big deal.
XIAOLAN: Uh. Only all of the servants, eunuchs. and concubines are talking about it!
XIAOLAN: As I recall it started a few weeks ago. Those who've seen her say a ghostly lady dressed all in white appears and dances under the moon!
XIAOLAN: Also, she's been seen every night on the eastern wall.
We can see a brief flash of the woman from behind. She is just standing and her hair is flowing slightly, like there is a breeze.
MAOMAO: That so.
MAOMAO: The castle walls completely cage in the rear palace. The only way you can enter is through one of the four gates located at each cardinal direction.
XIAOLAN: Mm-Mm!
MAOMAO: But there are always guards posted at them. Plus, there's a moat surrounding the perimeter. Sneaking in or out is impossible. I've heard stories, about what's at the bottom of those waters.
As Maomao speaks we are given a visual of guards that are posted at the gates. The of the water that surrounds the rear palace. As Maomao keeps talking a body floats up from the water. The camera angle changes to show the ground next to the moat and a hand grips the edge and a woman floats up. Her hair covers her face but you can see the hint of a smile and red lips.
MAOMAO: Apparently the corpses of past concubines who tried fleeing call it home.
Xiaolan is gripping the sides of her head and shuttering in fear.
MAOMAO: In short, just your typical ghost story.
XIAOLAN: What should I do if I see the spirit for real!
MAOMAO: Try waking up, because you're dreaming.
We see Maomao running up to the medical office where Guen is, she is holding a small jar.
MAOMAO: Excuse me, but could you look at this medicine?
GUEN: Oh, it's you, miss. Just one moment please.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Hard to believe not long ago he didn't want me anywhere near this place. But as soon as he found out I knew how to make my own medicine, He started acting more cordial.
MAOMAO (Thinking): These days he shares ingredients with me. He even makes tea.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Should he really be so laid back?
GUEN: Mm, forgive the wait.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Oh Wow!
GUEN: Go on! you prefer salty over sweet right?
JINSHI: If you're feeling generous, may I?
GUEN: Oh! Right away!
Guen quickly leaves to prepare more tea for Jinshi taking the tray with him. Maomao droops as her snack was taken away from her.
JINSHI: Hard at work? Good girl.
MAOMAO: I don't deserve such lavish praise.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Does he really have nothing better to do? Eunuchs ought to be at the domestic service department. Instead he wanders around the entire rear palace like he's overseeing the inner court.
MAOMAO: Wah...
MAOMAO (Thinking): But if that's the case, he must out rank the matron of the serving women. I'd say he could be the emperors guardian, But just look at him. No one this young would have this job.
MAOMAO (Thinking): I get it. He must be the emperors favorite.
Cartoon Maomao appears over a yellow circle background. The yellow circle fades into an image of Jinshi with a man in emperors attire.
JINSHI: You're thinking about something lascivious right now, aren't you?
MAOMAO: My minds pure as driven snow.
Guen hums as he walks back in holding the tray with more tea on it.
JINSHI: Doctor, if you're free, would you mind fetching these from the back.
Guen takes the paper and leaves sadly. He leaves the tray with the snacks and tea with Maomao.
MAOMAO: Out with it. Why did you really come here?
JINSHI: Have you heard anything about this spirit?
MAOMAO: Only a few rumors.
JINSHI: And how much do you know about sleep walking?
MAOMAO: Hm? Sleep walking?
Maomao's pervious bored expression lights up at the mention.
JINSHI: Seems like i got your attention!
Maomao scowls and Jinshi places a hand on her shoulder and leans over her.
JINSHI: How would you treat it?
MAOMAO: I don't know. As far as I'm aware Medicine won't do any good.
JINSHI: And is there a cure other than medicine?
MAOMAO: That sounds outside my expertise.
JINSHI: A shame, truly.
JINSHI: But if something were to come to mind?
Jinshi quickly moves to be Infront of Maomao and she shudders in response.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Ugh! He sticks to you like a sparkly leech!
MAOMAO: I'll see what I can do.
Later that night, Gaoshun takes Maomao on a walk through the palace grounds to try and see the "spirit" dancing on the wall.
MAOMAO (Thinking): This guy doesn't come off as your typical eunuch.
GAOSHUN: Lady Maomao?
MAOMAO: You don't have to call me that. I'm pretty certain you outrank me by a significant margin.
GAOSHUN: Then, Xiaomao?
MAOMAO (Thinking): Little Mao? That's a sharp turn.
GAOSHUN: One more thing, would you mind not glaring at master Jinshi, As if he were a mere insect.
MAOMAO: Ogh. He noticed.
GAOSHUN: You should have seen him when he returned.
We can see a still image of Jinshi sparkling, presumably talking to Gaoshun about how Maomao looked at him, with a drawing of a caterpillar over his head.
GAOSHUN: He ecstatically shared with me how you stared at him like he was some venomous caterpillar.
MAOMAO: Ugh. I'll be more careful from now on.
GAOSHUN: If anyone else saw him in that state unprepared, there's a good chance they might pass out.
MAOMAO (Thinking): To each their own I guess.
The two keep walking until they reach the wall where the woman is dancing. Eerie music plays.
GAOSHUN: There she is.
MAOMAO: Woah. A moonlit cotton rose.
GAOSHUN: Interesting coincidence.
The eerie music stops and turns into beautiful, calming music as we get a close up of Concubine Fuyou dancing.
GAOSHUN: Her name happens to be Fuyou. She's a mid-ranking concubine, soon to be rewarded to a military officer.
For a moment we seen Jinshi sitting solemnly in his office before we are taken to a scene with Guen, Gaoshun, and Maomao.
GUEN: I believe she's been here two years. Despite being a skilled dancer she's quite timid. It's so peculiar, she stumbled preforming for the emperor. And ever since then, he's refused to touch her.
GUEN: The poor girl, she's locked herself away.
As Guen continues to talk we get to see Fuyou preforming for the emperor, the dance where she stumbles.
GUEN: I guess some things can't be avoided but, a bestowal?
LADY IN WAITING (Flashback): Lady Fuyou!
GUEN: It's enough to break your heart.
We are taken back to the present where the three are chatting in the medical office.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Did she start sleep walking over the shock of being used as a prize? They do say illness is a result of an unbalanced mind.
MAOMAO (Thinking): No, further information is needed. Maybe I'll take another look at her.
MAOMAO: Guen where is concubine Fuyou's room?
GUEN: Hm? here building is on the north side.
MAOMAO: You've been most helpful. And thanks for the snacks.
GUEN: Leaving already?
GUEN: I just hope her condition begins to improve. Being a princess of a small vasal state, I'm certain she doesn't want to go back there.
MAOMAO: What was that?
GUEN: Oh yes, you don't know?
The scene cuts to Maomao and Gaoshun walking down a path, where we can hear two girls talking about concubine Fuyou.
GIRL 1: I feel sorry for Concubine Fuyou.
GIRL 2: Me too, I shudder at the thought of being given away to some military officer as a trophy.
Maomao stops walking, presumably in a realization, and the scene again changes. this time we see Maomao and Gaoshun hiding in a bush near concubine Fuyou's room to observe her.
MAOMAO: Compared to how she looked dancing on the wall, it's like she's a different person during the day.
GAOSHUN: Indeed. I was just as surprised the first time I saw her in this state.
GAOSHUN: The lady appears so unassuming.
MAOMAO: She really is like a cotton rose.
GAOSHUN: How do you mean?
MAOMAO: Well, the fuyou flower, her namesake, in the morning it blooms revealing white petals. However, one evening falls its color changes and takes on a deep pink hue.
GAOSHUN: Most strange. A flower that can alter its appearance over the course of a day.
MAOMAO: Yes.
There is a long moment of silence where Maomao watches Fuyou. Gaoshun turns his head to look at Maomao more with a impressed expression on his face. The scene again changes. This time we are with Maomao and Xiaolan.
XIAOLAN: The spirit story?
MAOMAO: Yeah, do you happen to know anymore about it? Its got be curious.
XIAOLAN: Nothing comes to mind.
XIAOLAN: Except I heard she first appeared on the north side of the rear palace.
MAOMAO: Huh?
MAOMAO: The north side?
SERVING GIRL 1: Xiaolan! Fetch the laundry!
MAOMAO: She went from there to the east?
XIAOLAN: Coming!
MAOMAO: That's odd.
XIAOLAN: Gotta go!
GUEN (Memory): Oh yes, you don't know?
MAOMAO: I figured. So that's who she really is.
Maomao stares at her pinky.
MAOMAO: Dad said never base conclusions on pure speculation, but what other answer is there?
The scene changes to the Parlor room in Concubine Gyokuyou's Pavilion. Maomao is addressing Concubine Gyokuyou, Hongiang, Jinshi, and Gaoshun about Concubine Fuyou.
MAOMAO: It's called sleep walking, or somnambulance. They say it's caused by stress. The patient moves about in their sleep as if they're awake.
MAOMAO: Awhile ago, at the brothels, I saw a courtesan with the same Illness.
MAOMAO: She was a cheerful person and skilled at poetry. She even received a purchase offer. However it ended up being rescinded.
MAOMAO (Thinking): Soon after, she started roaming the brothel at night, as if possessed by a demonic spirit.
We see a brief moment of a girl walking away from the camera, her feet leave dirty footprints on the tile as she walks. We then see the same girl surrounded by courtesans, presumably during the day.
COURTESAN (Memory?): Oh hello! What's wrong with everyone?
MAOMAO: The next morning, she had no recollection of the previous nights events.
JINSHI: Go on, then what happened?
MAOMAO: Nothing. When the purchase offer was rescinded, the sleep walking came to an abrupt end.
GYOKUYOU: I see. Could it be that the courtesan didn't want to be sold?
MAOMAO: It's possible.
MAOMAO: A wealthy merchant made the proposition. But he had a wife and children, not to mention grandchildren. Also, she only had a single year left on her contract.
GYOKUYOU: Perhaps Concubine Fuyou and her are alike.
JINSHI: mmm. Is that really what's going on?
MAOMAO: I think so.
JINSHI: Are you sure?
GAOSHUN (Almost silently): Hold it in! remain strong!
MAOMAO: I'll return to my work.
MAOMAO (thinking); From that day on, Concubine Fuyou was forbidden from leaving her room. Until the day of her bestowal, eunuchs were placed to watch her.
MAOMAO: I hope this ends well.
We can see Concubine Gyokuyou and Hongiang walking down the path. Gyokuyou turns to see Maomao walking into one of the Jade Pavilion's buildings.
GYOKUYOU: Is it me, or is Maomao acting odd lately?
HONGIANG: I haven't noticed.
The scene changes to show Maomao and the other ladies in waiting performing cleaning tasks while Gyokuyou pauses what she's doing to watch. (Maomao specifically)
GYOKUYOU: I can tell. Something must be wrong.
We see the sun rise over the palace before it shifts to be a room with lady Gyokuyou and Maomao. Maomao is picking things off of a table in front of Gyokuyou, and putting them on a tray.
GYOKUYOU: Concubine Fuyou is leaving today, do I have that right?
MAOMAO: So I've heard.
GYOKUYOU: Hm.
We again switch to see the palace again, many people are gathered around to watch Fuyou be handed off to the military official. Maomao and Lady Gyokuyou both are there.
GYOKUYOU: Come now, speak, you should know by now you can tell me what you're thinking.
GYOKUYOU: Anything at all!
GYOKUYOU: I swear I won't get upset, after all I asked you.
MAOMAO: This is nothing more than conjecture, so if you wouldn't mind keeping it just between us two.
GYOKUYOU: I promise, my lips are sealed. Hehe!
MAOMAO: Do you remember the story of the courtesan I told you about earlier?
GYOKUYOU: The sleep walker, right?
MAOMAO: That's correct.
MAOMAO: So there was another... with the same affliction. Like before the negotiations for her fell through. And a little while later, this courtesan received another purchase offer from someone else.
MAOMAO: However she was considered to be ill. Since she was seen as less valuable, her price was halved. Turns out, the entire affair was a ruse.
GYOKUYOU: How so?
MAOMAO: Predicably the second man who made the offer to buy her happened to be an acquaintance of the first. The woman had pretended to be sick., in order to nullify the initial purchase.
MAOMAO: Later, the one she wanted showed up, and he bid for her at halve the price.
MAOMAO: They wanted to be together, but the man lacked the silver and the woman still had time left on her contract.
GYOKUYOU: She and Concubine Fuyou, they both had similar intentions?
MAOMAO: The military officer she's being given too. Apparently the two of them were childhood friends and grew up in the same land. From what I hear, this solider demonstrated notable valor during the battle against the barbarians the other day.
We get a close shot of Concubine Fuyou walking down the main steps, followed by her two ladies in waiting. We see the other ladies in waiting gathered around, watching her off. We get a final shot of her standing in front of the gate, ladies in waiting at her side, before it changes back to Maomao and Gyokuyou.
MAOMAO: When asked what he wished for, he was adamant about receiving concubine Fuyou.
MAOMAO: Before he left for war, he must have fantasized about being with her. But he's an officer and could never propose marriage to a princess.
GYOKUYOU: As fate would have it, she was later sent to live in the rear palace.
MAOMAO: The princess also had feeling for her childhood friend. That's probably the reason she failed at her dance. Its a good way of avoiding the emperor making advances towards you. After all, he never touched her and she managed to keep her purity in tact.
MAOMAO: That said, The emperor could have still shown interest. Which would have delayed her reunion with the officer.
GYOKUYOU: And so she feigned her somnambulism. Far be it from me to say I know what the emperor thinks, but that is possible.
MAOMAO: The battle took place in the east, its curious. The ghost, you remember where she danced nightly?
GYOKUYOU: The eastern gate.
MAOMAO: She was probably wishing for his safe return. Still, though, it's speculation.
The gate opens for Fuyou and on the other side the military officer stands waiting for her with a smile on his face. They walk to meet each other in the middle of the gate and the officer bows down for her.
GYOKUYOU: Say, Maomao?
MAOMAO: Yes?
We see the couple walking out of the rear palace side by side smiling.
GYOKUYOU: Would I sound like a truly awful person, if I said I envy Concubine Fuyou?
The two walk from the palace and towards a carriage. Fuyou's two ladies in waiting follow several paces behind them.
MAOMAO: When I saw her that night, she was so beautiful.
We get a flashback of Fuyou dancing on the wall as Maomao speaks.
MAOMAO: Nothing like she was during the day. She struck me as just another nondescript princess.
MAOMAO: No, my lady, I wouldn't say that.
The couple climb into the carriage and we get brief flashes of their life together. (Either before, or after the events of this episode). Within the carriage the officer approaches Fuyou, she reaches a hand out to touch his face and he grabs it in both his hands. She glances to the front of the carriage as the officer drops her hands and pulls her into a tight embrace. And Fuyou leans into him softly crying.
GYOKUYOU: Shall we go?
MAOMAO: Yes.
As Maomao and Lady Gyokuyou walk away the scene changes to Gaoshun and Jinshi in Jinshi's office. Jinshi is happily staring out the window smiling. Presumably at the happy ending that the couple received. We again switch to see Maomao talking to herself.
MAOMAO: It's said love has the power to make a woman more beautiful. I wonder what sort of medicine it would make?
Gyokuyou is sitting in her bedroom, on a bench, she's looking behind her out of a window, when a man walks in.
EMPEROR: Where's this rumored apothecary, I have a special request.
On the 17th of March, 2011, 29-year-old Ka Yang from Sacramento, California, called local authorities. She said that there had been a horrid accident and that they must rush to her house immediately. At the scene, paramedics found the lifeless body of 2-month-old Mirabelle Thao-Lo. It was evident that she had been burnt to death.
When investigators arrived, Ka told investigators that she had blacked out from an epileptic seizure while holding Mirabelle in her arms. She said when she awoke, she found Mirabelle on the floor beside a heater. She had burnt herself on the heater, Ka contended. Investigators noted that the infant’s pyjamas were mysteriously intact and her hair was unsinged. While searching the residence, investigators found Mirabelle’s pacifier in the microwave. Evidence pointed towards Mirabelle being burnt alive in the microwave. When presented with this evidence, Yang confessed that she had lied, adding that she believes she suffers from multiple personalities.
The pathologist declared that Mirabelle suffered severe thermal injuries to her body. Furthermore, the radiation had literally cooked her small intestine and stomach. It was believed that Mirabelle had been placed in the microwave for up to five minutes. While this can often be a horrific plot in a scary story, the gruesome killing method of placing a baby in a microwave is quite rare. In fact, there are only three instances of this happening with Ka Yang being the third.
She was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 26 years to life.

Ka Yang Convicted Of Cooking Her 1-Month-Old Baby To Death In Microwave
SACRAMENTO, CA — Four years ago we reported on 34-year-old Ka Yang, the woman who cooked her infant daughter to death inside a microwave. On Friday, a jury found her guilty of first-degree murder.
In March of 2011, Yang’s daughter was found dead in her home. Yang told investigators that she was holding her baby when she had a seizure and passed out. When she woke up she said she found her infant dead on the ground next to a space heater.
What her version of events didn’t explain was why the baby girl suffered fourth degree burns from head-to-toe, yet her hair and pajamas were not singed. It also didn’t explain why the baby’s pacifier was in the microwave.
After a three month investigation, investigators determined that Yang had placed the infant in the microwave and cooked her for for 2-and-a-half to 5 minutes. Yang was arrested and charged with one count of murder and one count of assault leading to the death of a child under age 8.
During her trial, Yang’s attorney admitted her client put the girl in the microwave, but did so unknowingly during an epileptic episode. This same defense was used by Virginia Martinez in 1999, a woman who claimed she was having a seizure when she confused her 5-week-old with a bottle of milk when she cooked him to death in a mocrowave.
That defense worked for Martinez, who was sentenced to five years in prison, but Yang’s jury didn’t buy it – they found Yang guilty on both charges. She will be looking at 26 years to life in prison when she is sentenced in December.
Yang is the third person we’ve covered on the site who has been accused or convicted of cooking their kid in a microwave. China Arnold was found guilty of cooking 4-week-old Paris Talley in a microwave and Joshua Mauldin was accused of placing 2-month-old Ana Mauldin inside a motel room microwave and turning it on for 10 seconds.
