Reference P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 So back to Taft these are two books that I’m using at the moment to help develop texture and depth in my current work. As I mentioned in my previous posts the texture that I created in my previous project - Travel and Explore- was a large part of its success and I had wanted to build on this initially by using concrete for a 3D work. However due to an injury to my thumb amongst other reservations as well as further research and development of ideas my current work is largely stitch based. At the beginning of this course I was completely new to machine embroidery and have been amazed and surprised at the textures and effects that can be created. This book by Polly O’Neil has inspired me to observe surfaces that we come across in our every day lives in greater detail and depth. The book by @gwenhedley is full of inspiration, especially for someone new to stitching in this way, of techniques and ideas of how to develop texture and depth in your work through looking at her own artwork and that of many more textile artists. From the artists she features I’m particularly interested in further researching the artwork of Bernie Leahy who captures ‘fleeting moments of gesture and expression’ as I am also currently doing. #gwenhedley #strodefad #kaderattia #fmp #finalmajorproject #strodecollege #textileart #texture #surfacesandtextures #pollyoneil https://www.instagram.com/p/B_cGMRel9DL/?igshid=ahyi2d800ep2
An excellent day in London with the UAL level 3 and BTEC Art Foundation Diploma Students, now all working on their level 4 Final Major Project.
‘Tracey Emin’ at the White Cube Bermondsey, great gallery and exhibition, lots of discussion and apparently Tracey herself was in the gallery, according to students who are sure that they saw her. Then walked to the Thames via Borough Market and past the old Clink Street prison and Operating Theatre. Then into the Hayward Gallery for Kader Attia - terrific show ‘Museum of Emotion’ and the Dianne Arbus photography retrospective, both inspiring. Then an hour in Tate Modern before all back onto the coach to Somerset. A great way to conclude the term.

Kader Attia’s J’Accuse was pretty emotive, with its giant heads watching a movie about war.
The Museam of Contemporary Art in Sydney allows photography of the artwork displayed.
“...they use cast-off elements to express the powerful transference that occurs when, say, African or Latin American makers integrate Western components into their objects. For Attia, mixed or patched objects like these symbolize resistance and ingenuity.” — @artnet • "Untitled" (detail), 2017, ancient Dogon wooden mask, Muslim prayer beads from Senegal, and metal base. #kaderattia #reasonsoxymorons (at Lehmann Maupin)
Reference P1, P2, P3, P5 Following my planned schedule in week two of the project I began to make maquettes of ideas. Pictured is the first one - referencing the work of Kader Attia - an idea of using a construction fence - with life size body parts pushing or breaking through it. I used photos of fellow students arms in this maquette. Following a discussion with Duncan which included a demonstration of how to use concrete following maquettes used concrete feet for the fence. However I realised very early on my own physical difficulties (some tendinitis/arthritis in my right hand) would make the technical and physical aspect very difficult to create large concrete sculptures in the college setting. I therefore started to question whether it would be practical for me to continue with that idea and so continued develop different ideas and to broaden my research into different materials, techniques and artists. #stodefad #strodecollege #fmp #finalmajorproject #maquette #concrete #kaderattia https://www.instagram.com/p/B_cAmFbFzW8/?igshid=8pv95xsp89f1
Reference P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 Today I’m continuing with the story of the history of my project. These photos are of some of the first pages of my sketchbook showing early brainstorming of how to develop ideas from the previous project. In particular using texture in my work and pushing myself to use materials new to myself - my first idea was to use concrete for a 3D work - I started to research how to use it and the effects and textures possible. I started to look at how women in different times and cultures have been restricted by their clothing but still able in many cases to achieve great things. I wanted my work to express that positive side therefore the idea of pushing or breaking through barriers to success. I noted and saved on day two of my research (3rd Feb) an article about face masks in response to Covid 19, without fully understanding what was soon about to happen, but linked that to the wearing of veils. I looked at ways in which veiled women have been portrayed in classical art - in particular the 1515, The Donna Velata by Raphael. I also started to looked at contemporary artists work in particular that of Kader Attia whose work I liked because I of the rawness and texture of the materials, the repeated images or objects and the symbolic nature of many of his works. I was also looking at the work of Paul Ritter who in the 1960s and 70s had developed a technique of using concrete which he called Sculptcrete. #stodefad #strodecollege #fmp #finalmajorproject #artexploration #earlyideas #sketchbook #veiledwomen #raphael #donnavelata #thedonnavelata #kaderattia #concrete #paulritter #sculptcrete https://www.instagram.com/p/B_b-MIhF_Jf/?igshid=4eon4gm96eql
