While at home today, I took the time to check on my #basil and #kafirlime in the balcony. Happy that they’re growing so well!

I’ve been harvesting enough basil leaves to regularly have fresh #pesto in the kitchen. Kafir leaves take longer to harvest; from the last time I did, the wait was well worth it.

Going back to #gardening was an #existential experiment. Early this year, I was suffocating from the toxicity one has to endure from some people at work. At one point, I had rolled my eyes so much, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to see straight again. I love to labor and to work but to what #purpose, to what end? How would I like to spend the end of my days?

The answer came from a vision, a dream. Was I awake or asleep? I don’t remember. I just knew I wanted to end my days like I did when I was younger: Find fulfillment in simply growing things, living things.

To do that, I had to rediscover the #greenthumb I supposedly inherited from my grandma. Could I still grow things, a whole garden again, even in the middle of the city? If I can do it in a small but challenging environment, maybe I can grow the idea to something bigger. Eventually.

One day, at sunset, I will sip my iced tea and look to the horizon, surrounded by all the growing things, living things. I will remember this time when I was breaking free, breaking ground for that something bigger. (at Rosewood Pointe, Acasia Estates, Taguig)
