The Han River was buzzing with activity despite the sun beginning to set along the western horizon, filling the sky up with streaks of orange and red across the sky. All around you, people were passing by enjoying their evening, riding their bikes or jogging along the river bank or just simply taking a leisurely stroll. No one paid much attention to you sat by yourself on a bench, nor did they flicker a glance at the man dressed in a black suit just behind you.
You had found that people often seemed to just ignore dealings with the mafia, blissfully ignorant to the darker world going on around them. You probably would be the same if you hadn’t grown up with the mafia. Growing up with a mafia boss for a father meant you were pretty used to living a dangerous life, especially since your father died and your fiancé was named his successor. Now instead of being the daughter to a mafia boss, you were about to marry one.
Despite all the crazy, dangerous and possibly illegal things going on in your life, you and Jongin still managed to make time for each other. It may not sound like a normal relationship but you tried to be as much as possible - date nights to the cinema or dining out in fancy restaurants. For tonight’s date night, he was treating you to ice cream by the river.
Someone came up behind you, their lips pressed lightly to your ear, an ice cream presented before your very eyes. You knew it was Jongin. If it had been anyone else, security wouldn’t have let them get so close. Plus you would never forget your fiancé’s low dulcet voice. “There you go cupcake,” he murmured softly, handing you your favourite strawberry and lime ice cream.
Turning to look at him, your eyes followed his smooth steps as he walked around the bench and stood in front of you, his legs on either side of yours while he casually licked his chocolate caramel ice cream. He was dressed in the tailored brown suit he left in that morning. However, it wasn’t odd for him to come home wearing something different. You tried not to think about what that meant but the back of your mind told you it was unlikely to be because he spilt coffee down his front.
You stood up between his legs, your lips on your ice cream and your eyes staring into his mesmerising dark orbs with an intensity that made your legs weak. “Do you want to go for a walk?” you asked quietly, taking a deliberately long lick of your ice cream.
“Not unless you had other plans,” he answered coyly as his lips curled up into a devilish smirk, his eyes never leaving yours … not even to blink.
Leaning into his body, you wrapped an arm around his waist and moved up onto your tiptoes. “Other plans?” you replied feigning innocence, slowly licking his ice cream and purposely leaving traces on your lips.
Jongin pressed his hand into the small of your back, pinning you against his body with no room to move. He ducked his head and captured your lips between his own, his tongue moving expertly until his teeth caught your bottom lip and tugged it back playfully. “We’ll continue this later,” he almost growled low and sexy.
“You started it,” you exclaimed, pushing on his chest hard. You should have known the mafia boss would play dirty.
He stumbled back, taking you with him and looping your arm around his. He pushed his fingers between yours and squeezed tightly, lowering his lips to your ear. “And I’ll finish it later,” he assured you, brushing his thumb across the back of your hand.
Your stomach fluttered with butterflies. You had no doubt he would.
Then he started pulling you along the riverside like nothing had even happened, switching to perfect gentleman as you walked side by side with your twisted hands swinging in between. For a moment you were quiet, just admiring the calm river and the hubbub of activity you were surrounded by. You offered Jongin a lick of your ice cream and he did the same, both of you smiling like giddy.
On the outside, you probably looked like any other couple, just out enjoying the evening and your ice creams. However, you knew you weren’t like any normal couple. You were hyperaware of the men in suits following you, men who used to work for your father but now for Jongin. Wherever your fiancé went, they followed. It wasn’t something you liked particularly but it was a part of being engaged to the boss of a mafia. Your relationship was hard but you tried to make it work, making time for each other whenever you could.
“We should do this more often,” you mused softly, leaning your head against your fiancé’s strong arm and licking the last traces of ice cream off your fingers.
Jongin sighed wistfully, stroking the back of your hand with his delicate touch he reserved only for you. “Don’t say that,” he implored quietly, turning to bury a kiss on the top of your head. “It makes me feel like a terrible fiancé.”
Your gaze flickered up to his and saw a sad expression that pained your heart. “You are a wonderful fiancé and you’ll make an amazing husband too when we choose a date.” you told him sternly, reaching up to cradle his cheek and turn his face away from the river towards you. “All I mean is that our date nights are becoming less and less frequent and I’m only realising now how much I miss them,” you explained, stopping you both at the side of the path. You were conscious of his men stopping too.
“Oh cupcake,” he sighed breathlessly, scooping you up against his body and interlacing all his fingers with yours. “I didn’t know you were feeling this way! Now I definitely am a terrible fiancé,” he whined cutely.
You melted under his touch and reached up onto your tiptoes to face him better, forcing his dark eyes to meet yours and look nowhere else. “You are perfect Nini,” you told him, peppering his lips with kisses. “I just feel like I only ever see you in the mornings when we wake up and the evenings when we go to sleep. I miss you.”
Jongin pressed his forehead against yours, his dark and intense eyes sending shivers down your body. “I’m sorry cupcake,” he whispered, regret thick in his voice. “You deserve the world. It’s a miracle you’re still with me.”
“Of course I’m still with you. I love you Jongin and I don’t intend to give you up, especially not to the mafia. We both need to do better,” you argued, pressing your lips against his. The kiss was soft and slow but the tension in his body was gradually drawn out of his body, until he was leaning on you, just as much as you were holding onto him.
His lips pulled back with a harsh gasp. “I promise to make to it all alright cupcake,” he insisted desperately, letting go of your hands to cradle your face with his gentle touch. “I promise with all of my heart.”
You shivered again, from both the chill in the air and the flutter in your stomach. “I promise too,” you murmured against his lips, smiling as he kissed you. His lips moved against yours and made you feel like the only girl in the world. He gathered you up in his arms and lifted you off the ground, spinning you slowly until you were dizzy and lost in his touch.
When your feet finally touched the ground once more, you stumbled back a little breathlessly, biting your bottom lip and looking up at Jongin with bright and wide eyes. Your body shook still, adrenaline coursing through your body as the tingles of his touch were left across your skin.
Jongin stepped closer, slipping out of his suit jacket and moving to drape it over your shoulders. “Let’s go home cupcake,” he told you in his low dulcet voice, waiting for you to slip your arms into the sleeves of his jacket. He then took your hand in his and started pulling you back in the direction you’d came from.
“We have some unfinished business to attend to.”
You giggled and curled up into his side, unable to help yourself from kissing the corner of his sharp jaw. “I was hoping you’d say that.”

Miyong pov
She had started cutting vegetables for the food because Jongin texted he was running a little late. At first she’d thought something off it, but she pushed it away when she received another text that he was on his way. They’d been hanging out a lot, going for lunch together, or late dinner after shifts. He’d helped her with her criminal law course and she helped him with philosophy.
God, she’d fallen for him so hard and it felt like there was no return. He was everything she wanted really. Not the criminal aspect, but everything else. The beautiful smile, the kind heart, the soft personality. He’d great with kids, and smart too, genuine and lovely. A little crazy sometimes, but she liked it. She’d grown attached to him, and she wouldn’t know what it was like without him anymore.
Today would be the first time he’d meet her dog. She hadn’t really mentioned him before she realised. The little corgi that kept her company in her apartment, Nana.
Her bell rang, and the little floof raced off the couch to the door, barking excitedly at the newcomer. She’d been at the vet when Jongin came over last time. She was barking and she knew Jongin was a dog lover, so she made no rush in getting to the door. Miyong washed her hands and checked her makeup in the mirror before she walked over. “Coming!” she called.
Jongin waved at her through the window, and pointing at Nana with a goofy smile. As soon as she opened the door he bent down and scooped up the little dog in his arms. “You have a dog?!” he asked, petting her and holding her close. Nana tried to lick his face and he laughed it off. “You never told me!”
He seemed so happy with the little animal right there it made Miyong smile just as wide. “Yes, I forgot I guess. Her name’s Nana.”
“Little Nana.” He pet her ears which were standing up with happiness. “She’s cute. I want a dog.”
“I know, you’ve mentioned. Well you can come here to play with Nana as often as you want.” She said motioning him over to the kitchen. “I already started a little, I hope you don’t mind.”
He carried Nana and didn’t make any intention of letting her go, holding her tight, and the dog seemed content in his arms. Jongin traced little patterns in her fur as she leant her head on his shoulder.
“So I assume all you attention is going to go to the dog now?” she joked.
Jongin’s eyes widened for a second. “Of course not, I just like dogs.” He stepped over and kissed her cheek. “But you having a dog is definitely a plus.” He winked cutely.
When she blushed a little and kissed him back he put Nana back on the floor and started to help her with cooking. They made chicken teriyaki, a recipe she’d gotten from her grandmother a few years ago.
Jongin loved it, and she was glad. As they found themselves huddled up on the couch together with second serve plates and Nana sleeping on Jongin’s feet. He commented on how it felt like a little warm blanket, and asked how old she was.
“She’s 2 now, I got her when I moved out. My parents didn’t want me to be alone. But she’s not much of a protector, she’d lick the blood of my murderer’s hand I think.” Miyong joked.
Jongin covered the dogs ears. “She’ll hear you.” He laughed.
There was sauce in the corner of his mouth, and she wiped it away. He blushed a little, spreading over the tan of his cheekbones. She wondered for a second, if he was always this happy and smiley, or whether it was just because of her. Miyong remembered when he’d told her about his job and he’d seemed to small and broken. But she hadn’t seen that Jongin since, he was all smiled and laughs now. But maybe it was different when he was home. Although he did she he liked the ones he was with, even if he didn’t like the job.
“Jongin?”
“Hmm?” he mumbled with his mouth full.
“You say that they’re your family right? They guys you live and work with.”
He swallowed and nodded. “That’s what it feels like, really.”
“But then, if you leave, what happens?”
Suddenly his smile faltered, and she regretted asking. “I…Sometimes I don’t want to think about it, but I know that when I leave I can’t just come back. I mean I can always come home I guess, they’ll miss me as well, and I’m sure they’ll be here for me if I need them. Especially Angel. But I can’t just come and go as I please. Because of my identity and danger that it can cause to me and the people around me. It’ll be hard, but it’s what I want. It’s not like they’re completely gone, I learnt a lot from them, good and bad things, but they’ll always remain family.” There was a tear in the corner of his eye, and she reached out to wipe it away.
“Don’t go until you have somewhere to go.” She said. “You shouldn’t be alone.”
He chuckled and looked at her, eyes turning to little crescent moons, cheeks lifting again. “You’re so sweet. I don’t think I will, no. I don’t go to be alone. I’d rather stay with them and do this work than be alone a-“
Jongin halted at the end of his sentence, it was barely audible, but she caught it. His sentence wasn’t finished but he seemed to play it off as if it had.
Miyong gathered the last bit of her food and ate it, savouring the taste, because sadly it was all gone now. “I’m sorry for taking away the good mood.” She put her plate on the table.
“Oh, don’t be sorry, it’s okay. I mean it’s okay for you to ask things like that, really. I understand.” He finished his plate and quickly exchanged it for Nana in his lap, who woke from her slumber. She leant with her paws against his chest and pressed her nose against him, short stubby tail wagging with excitement. He brushed his fingers through her fur and laughed loudly as she tried to lick his cheek.
How a small dog like that could bring him such joy, she wondered. But it was a good thing. Miyong gathered the plates and put them in the dishwasher. She opened the fridge and pouted a little, “I don’t have anything for dessert.”
Jongin looked up and carefully pushed Nana down into his lap. “We can go out for dessert?”
“Go where? There’s nothing open this late.” She frowned.
“Oh, I know a place, I think it’s a few blocks from here. I know the owner, come we can take Nana.”
Miyong narrowed her eyes at him, stepping closer as he got up, pushing a finger into his chest. “This is just a lame excuse to take Nana for a walk isn’t it.”
He smirked a little, something she hadn’t really seen this up close. And it did something to her she didn’t expect. “What?” he snickered. “You really are scared the dog will replace you?”
The mischief in his eyes made her heart flutter and she answered. “You’ve been touching Nana more than me all night.” It sounded better in her head and she could feel a light blush creep on her cheeks as soon as she said it. Jongin didn’t seem to mind though.
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close. Their lips connected and she sighed into it. By now the soft feel of his lips against hers were familiar and she easily followed his lazy rhythm. Until she felt something cold on her lip.
Miyong pulled away and frowned at him, looking at his face. “Jongin?” she asked.
“Hmm.” He hummed, light colouring on his cheek.
“Do you have piercings?”
The light colouring darkened and his eyes widened. “Uhmm…yes?”
Miyong reached for his face, and touched his upper lip, pushing it up a little. He flinched away. “Let me see, what the hell is that thing in your mouth.”
He whined like a little kid and grabbed her hand. So he closed his mouth and she saw him to something with his tongue under his lip. The moment he smiled again she saw two little balls sticking out underneath his top lip.
“Okay, that…” she trailed, looking at it.
Jongin closed his mouth. “You don’t like it.”
“Did you purposely hide that from me?” she asked.
He looked up sheepishly. “Well I’m not allowed to wear it at work anyway, so I have to take them ou-“
“Them? As in multiple?” okay she expected there to be one somewhere maybe…but she checked his ears now and they were clear of holes or whatever jewellery. So she wondered, where he was hiding them. “What?”
Jongin scrunched his nose and kinda stomped his foot. “This is why I always took them out, because I knew you wouldn’t like it.”
“I never said that.”
“Huh?”
“I never said that I don’t like it or them. I just…guess I didn’t really expect it to be in your mouth. Wait, please don’t tell me you have your nipples pierces or something?”
He quickly shook his head. “No, no, I have 5 in total.”
“Can I see?” She asked.
Jongin pretended to think on that a little, but he couldn’t contain his smile. “Maybe.”
“Maybe? Come on Jongin just show me.” She pouted.
That small tug at his lips that resembled a smirk appeared again, a small flash of that piercing. “I can’t just do that.” He laughed.
“Why?”
He pursed his lips and pulled her closer again, pressing his lips to the tip of her nose. “I’m not…stripping right now.” He whispered shyly.
Miyong frowned, yet again, “Excuse me Kim Jongin?”
Jongin laughed softly, shaking his head, and kissed her. She was not one to deny his kiss, smiling into it as he tipped her back a little. He was lean and strong, and with one hand she felt up the line of his body and slipped it under the collar of his button up. There, right along his collarbone, she felt a little bump there. Another piercing? She felt again, more clearly now, now breaking the kiss. His breath hitched when she touched it again and then she felt that smirk against her own lips.
With her other hand she undid one more button, and he halted for a second. But she just went to feel on the other side, finding something similar, only to continue the kiss. She pulled him with her, back to the couch, to sit, but Jongin had other ideas apparently. He lifted her slightly, and with a soft gasp she found herself on her back. Jongin hovered over her, and broke the kiss for a second to look at her. His eyes were darker, pupils wider, as he cupped her cheeks and kissed her again. There was more desire in this kiss than usual, as his tongue found hers and she again felt the piercing brush against her lips.
She moved her hands, lightly tugging his shirt from his jeans so she could slip her fingers under the fabric. His skin was soft, and warm and she kept one hand there, the other trailing into his soft hair. The remnants of product left in his hair were a little sticky but the strands slipped easily through her fingers.
One of his hands was moving down her side, his weight supported on his other arm. The position was a little uncomfortable, as the couch was shorter than he was, but neither of them had the intention of moving. Everything he did was soft and slow and he seemed to be content just like this right now.
He parted from her, breaths in soft pants fanning across her face. Jongin kissed her cheek, the corner of her jaw, and all soft butterfly kisses down her neck that made her skin tingle. The vest she’d been wearing over her camisole had slipped down her shoulder and he kissed the exposed skin. She felt his breath, a little shaky, as he leant his forehead on her shoulder and paused.
Again, she carded her fingers though his hair, wondering why he’d stopped so suddenly. “Jongin?’
“Hmm.” He hummed into her skin, and it tickled.
Miyong touched his cheek, then his chin to make him look up. His eyes were wide and full of wonder and he looked young. Strands of hair falling over his forehead, she brushed them away. “You okay?”
He nodded, and she pushed him up a little, sitting up with him and kissing him softly. His hands came up to her sides as he let her lead this time. Miyong stood up, following her heart. There was no tension in the air, it was calm and warm. She took his hands in hers and pulled him up with her. He smiled and kissed her lips, a soft breathy chuckle left him.
The reached the bedroom with soft kisses and easy breathe smiles, it was dimmed, the curtains drawn. Miyong turned the light on just a little, to not cause any stumbles. She landed on the bed with a soft bounce, Jongin crawling over her, his lips connecting to her neck again. Her fingers felt the expanse of his shoulders under his shirt, how the muscle moved as he shifted his weight. She felt his tongue dart out to taste her skin and she sunk her teeth into her bottom lip.
His nose brushed up along her neckline, and he came back to look into her eyes. With his thumb he pulled her bottom lip from her teeth and dove down for another kiss. A kiss that heated up more than any previous one, one that elicited a moan from her that took his breath away.
Jongin’s hands were roaming at her side, his fingers just on her skin where her top had ridden up. Miyong decided she’d had enough of the stiff fabric of his shirt, and moved to undo the buttons. He made a soft keening sound when she did so, pushing her deeper into the mattress, making it a little harder for her.
She chuckled against his mouth and finally got the last button. The fabric fell open, and her fingers found the smooth planes of his stomach. His muscles were lightly defined and soon she discovered another set of piercings near his hipbones. She’d have to decide if that was hot later on. Because the way he was devouring her mouth right now occupied her mind.
Then something happened, as she trailed her hands up his chest. He stopped, breath stuck in his throat. Jongin broke the kiss, panting, he looked at her, eyes scanning her form laying underneath him. She saw something in his eyes, wide with fear.
“Jongin?” she asked, reaching up to touch his face.
He flinched away, sitting up. His chest was heaving, and he swallowed thickly. “No.”
“Jongin, we don’t ha-“
“I need to go.”
“Jongin?” She asked, reaching out for his hand as she tried to sit up as well.
He pushed her hand away, and hastily got up from the bed. With trembling hands he did his buttons, very askew. Miyong got up and he just stepped back like a scared animal. Short breaths in and out through his nose. Fear, what had happened? Had she moved to fast?
“Jongin, I’m sorr-“
“Don’t, please don’t.” He pleaded, voice higher pitched than usual. “I need to go.”
He moved towards the door quickly, rushing. She went after his but he dodged her hands. “Jongin please.” She begged him, confused and upset.
Jongin furiously shook his head and fumbled to open the door. He was outside within a second, she followed him, trying. But he was quick, agile. Jumping down the stairs and disappearing in the streets.
There she was, it was dark outside and icy cold. She shivered, as tears appeared in her eyes. It must be at least minus 10, and she was bare footed and dressed in a thin top and vest. With small sniffles she walked back inside, seeing he’d left his shoes and coat here. He’d ran outside on his socks?
Was this her fault? She should’ve waited maybe. God why did she do that. Miyong wanted to beat herself up over this but, it seemed to weird. He’d never expressed anything like this when they were making out before. Nothing, shed had her hands under his shirt, he’s had his hands under his once. What did she do?
She walked into the living room, Nana barked at her from behind the door she had closed. She picked up the dog and cuddled her close. The pup whined. “I know Nana, I know. Do you think it was my fault?”
Nana pushed her nose against Miyong’s cheek as she sat down on the couch. Jongin’s phone was still on the table, it lit up. He had to come back for it right? He couldn’t just walk all the way home from here. God what if something happened to him? If he got hit by a car, of caught hypothermia in this weather.
She took his phone and looked at the screen. It was a text from someone named Chanyeol, he must’ve been one of the guys he lived with.
Yo, I’m free tomorrow morning if you still want to try out with the guns. Extra practice is never wrong. Let me know, I’m not sure if you have to work or not.
Guns? Okay, she shouldn’t be weird about that by now. She knew he handled weapons before. But this was so casual?
Miyong waited for an hour, the clock struck 1am, and that’s when she was done. Everything was here, his wallet, his phone, jacket, shoes. She took her phone and searched her stack of enveloped to find the business card she never thought she’d use.
Angel’s.
You looked at the boss a little bit scared. >>What did he want from you?<<
'go on eat' he said and you took the fork an knife hesitantly.
'you're not allergic to anything are you?' he asked smiling and you shook your head.
'no I’m not' you managed to say and started eating. It tasted amazing but you weren't really able to enjoy it as you were that nervous. What seemed like forever no one said a word and you were to afraid to ask anything.
'I heard you talked to Xiumin' Boss said and you nodded.
'yes he drove me back here after my shift' he nodded along to everything you said.
'I know I ordered him to do so' he said chewing his food. He swallowed and pointed at you with his fork at you casually.
'so do you like your work' he asked and you were thrown of track for a second.
'yes it's a good work, I enjoyed it very much' you weren't even lying you really had enjoyed it being a bartender. If it weren't for you working for people that kill on a probably daily basis you were more than happy.
'that's good I liked the way you acted at the bar, as well as some of my man, you served them today. You had this innocent aura around you which is definitely doing something for some of those guys.' you didn't know what to say.
'but I think you place will not always be behind the bar' a shiver went down your spine, he was telling you that you needed to do more to be good enough to stay alive.
'I think you would do a good job with the clients after you got some training but I'm sure the girls will be able to show you.' he continued and you just nodded, so they were having prostitutes, so that's what you needed to do. You couldn't speak you just nodded faintly.
'I haven't gotten the chance to know you name' the Boss smiled again showing his perfect pearly white teeth.
'Y/N. My name is Y/N Boss' you said looking at your plate moving the food with your fork from one side to the other side.
'I’m the families Boss...Kai' you looked at him faintly smilies and sank your eyes back to the table.
'Xiumin said that he told you were you are. Is that true?' he asked rather softly he wasn't that commanding as he was talking to, how he called them, his man.
'Yes he told me that your family is the Mafia' you said so calm and matter of factly that it really surprised you as well. The Boss raised an eyebrow.
'aren't you afraid' he said with a wide grin.
'I know you are dangerous man but what benefit would it gave me if I am afraid. I have respect... a lot of respect like all the girls but they don't seem to be afraid of you so I don't think I have to be either. They said that as long as you follow the rules you will be treated well.' you said not daring to looked at him.
'That's true as long as you follow the rules you'll be treated good. If you disobey... well you don't want to find out what happens then.' he said looking at the glass in his hands.
'so do you want to know about our family, what we do for a living?' he asked grinning at you. He was enjoying this so much, was he testing if you were lying about not being afraid. Were you actually afraid of them? you didn't think so. Was that stupid? Probably. But you always been kind of good at pushing fears aside that would make your life more difficult. If this was a good or bad think you didn't know but it was just how you were.
'If you want to tell me Boss.' you didn't know if it was ok that Xiumin told you about it, but then he wouldn't have told you if it wasn't ok. He nodded at you raising an eyebrow, as if he wanted you to tell him what you knew.
'I know that the family has a casino...' you started slowly 'so I guess gambling and Xiumin told me he works in racketeering so I’m guessing the family does protection racketeering.' you stopped, there probably was prostitutes.
'that's true but we work in a lot of different fields as well... but you don't really need to know right now... different topic... you don't have your own clothes here or other things that belong to you. Surely I can't have you go back to your flat but I can have Luhan go over and grab your stuff.' you nodded and told him your address. 'oh and we tell your landlord that you moved in with your boyfriend' he added and you nodded again. On the one hand you will have your stuff but on the other hand this was a reminder that you would never had your old independent life again.
'the room you are staying in will be your room now you can put your stuff in it and do whatever what you want to do to it. Tomorrow you will have another day with the girls and in the evening you will work at the casino again behind the bar' he reported to you and you nodded along with everything more as a sign that you understood him than your agreement.
'but that's enough for today Y/N you are probably tired.' he got up and opened his arms.
'you're now working for the family' he hugged you briefly to your surprise. And before you realised what happened he had pushed you away and had softly guided out of the door. You stood there in confusion then you slowly walked back to your now assigned room. You looked around, this room looked so different now that this was now your room. It wasn't a big room but you had a bed a wardrobe and a little desk. You sat down not really knowing what to do. someone walked into your room without knocking. It was Lee she had changed her clothes and wasn't wearing any make-up, she still looked really pretty.
'did you had dinner' you nodded. 'you probably want to change and take a shower I can show you where the bathroom is.'
'I'd love to take a shower but I don't have any clothes.' you admitted and Lee smiled at you.
'don't worry I can give you some of my clothes'
'thank you' she grabbed your arm and dragged you along the hallway. You tried to remember the way then she stopped infront of a door and opened it.
'this is the closest bathroom to your room. I'll quickly go and get your clothes' you nodded and walked into the bathroom. It was a nice big bathroom with white tiles and a lot of light. Lee came back and handed you the clothes.
'here you go... Shampoo and stuff is in here as well as towels.' she pointed at a cupboard and you nodded. 'oh and you can lock the door here' she left and you stripped off the clothes and stepped into the shower.
You had another day behind the bar. But how long would you stay behind that save bar? How long did you not have to interact more with the other clients. What kind of training would you get tomorrow what would they teach you? How to please the clients properly and how to stay safe? You shivered at the thought of sleeping with a stranger but all the girls seemed rather happy so you tried not to be scared. You wanted to survive to live as long as you could and maybe one day you could find a way out but till then you had to be strong and needed to do what you could.
You finished your showered and changed into Lee's clothes and walked back to your room. Thinking about what they would show you tomorrow you want to bed.

Angel pov
Suho was laying in the back of the car, his eyes closed and breath slow. There was an emergency kit in the trunk and you were not trying to put in an IV so that you could give him blood before he bled out.
“Are you sure you can do this?” Minseok asked, trying to hide his panic at the lifeless body of his best comrad, holding his vest against the wound in his side.
You didn’t look up and pushed the needle through into his arm hitting the vein just right. “Shut up.” Quickly you attached the blood bag and held it up high. “Chanyeol go, drive. Minseok call Lay.”
Chanyeol sped away with the car but took care around the turns. Suho was lying with his head in Minseok’s lap and his legs over yours, there was no other way.
“Lay? He’s been stabbed, lost a lot of blood. Left side. I don’t know if it’s deep, there’s a lot of blood. Artery?” Minseok talked on the phone and then turned to you. “Do you think they hit an artery?”
You looked down to the place where Minseok still held the wound. “He could’ve but seeing his still alive I don’t think they did. I’m not sure. I can’t inspect anything like this.”
“Not sure. Just fix it okay. No I didn’t. I don’t know. Yixing just fucking go get ready. Don’t talk back to me. YIXING!” that’s when Minseok hung up the phone, gritting his teeth and mumbling something.
Chanyeol made eye contact with you in the mirror and you gave him a short nod. Junmyeon’s pulse slowly pulled up a little, but it never got where it was supposed to be before you reached home.
Minseok and Chanyeol carried him inside while you hurried with holding up the blood bad. His body was oddly limp and it scared you, he was so pale and cold to the touch. Lay was waiting by the room, with someone else, a woman. Probably someone he worked with. He had his own contacts when it came to fixing up people from worse injuries, other doctors who worked on the illegal side.
The woman took the bag from you and you stayed outside while they carried him in. Kyungsoo was the first to find you from the living room, swiftly followed by Jongdae. “Hey Angel, what happened?”
You sighed deeply, relaxing your shoulders. Kyungsoo reached out for you, brushing his finger over your cheekbone that came back with a little smudge of blood. “Oh, someone got at me with a knife. They’re dead now, let’s hope it won’t scar.”
Jongdae frowned. “They kidnapped Suho?”
“They did, cornered him at the opera house, put him in a car probably. He must’ve tried to fight them and got stabbed as reward. They were after Xiumin for some reason, there was about 8 of them, we made quick work of it.”
Chanyeol exited the room, but Xiumin didn’t. “Hey, let’s get her out of the car.”
“Who?” Jongdae and Kyungsoo asked in unison.
You rolled your shoulder that had taken a good swing. “We took their leader, she’d tied up in the trunk. We’ll take her downstairs and make her wait for when Lay’s done. After what she did to Suho she definitely deserves it.”
The two of you walked back to the garage where the lady was probably out cold in the back. Or so you thought, the moment the door fell shut she started screaming. Not that she really could while she was gagged, but she made enough nose, banging her body against the insides of the car too.
Chanyeol opened the trunk. “Hey, don’t ruin the car yeah?” He hoisted her out of there and set her on her feet. She immediately struggled but with her hands tied at her back and to her body she didn’t have enough strength. So he was no match for her and easily held her in place.
You took a good look at her, but didn’t recognise her, snapping a picture with your phone to send over to Gio later. “Let’s go.” You took her other arm and together you pulled her through the large warehouse room, into the cellars where Lay’s room was. Suddenly you felt sick to your stomach at the idea of having to go in there, to actually come to face with what he does in there. And you didn’t want to, at all.
Chanyeol turned to you, the woman still trying to scream. “You’ve never been in there?”
You shook your head no.
“You don’t have to if you don’t want to. I can tie her down.” He looked at you a little concerned, probably confused because of you seemingly being scared to go in there.
There was a part of you that considered just coming with him, but your mind told you it was a bad idea. “I’ll stay here. If it goes sideways just give a yell.”
Chanyeol frowned a little but nodded, he was an annoying dork most of the time but he really was caring. So you waited as he unlocked the door with the keys Minseok gave him and pulled the woman inside. Who immediately began to trash violently at whatever she saw.
Before the door closed behind them you caught a glimpse of a chair in the middle of the room, with ropes hanging down from the ceiling. It was an old wooden chair, with cuffs near the ankles and wrists. You shivered at it, and you leant against the wall to turn away from the door. Your thoughts were swirling on the idea of sitting in that chair, tied up, Lay doing to you what he does best. Torture others. It was no secret in the group that his expertise laid in breaking the body and not fixing it.
Your legs were shaky and you slid down the wall to sit down for a little. All your hairs were standing up and you had goosebumps on your skin. It was cold down in the empty hallways, and you tried to calm your racing mind. Tried to stop wondering about what was going to happen in there. What could happen to you if you ended up in there. A threat that hung over your head too often to ignore.
“Angel?” Jongdae was skidding down the stairs and ran over to you, a little out of breath. He knelt down beside you and touched your forehead. “You’re warm, are you okay?” His eyes flickered to the door where the woman started making more noise and something was heard falling to the floor. You should go help him.
“I’ll go.” Kyungsoo said, following down the stairs, looking at you with concern and going through the door.
Your attention was with Jongdae though, who was trying to clam you down by rubbing his hand up and down your arm. “Did you go in there?”
You shook your head at him, and he wrapped his arms around you to pull you close. His chin rested on the top of your head.
“What did you see?”
“Chair.” You mumbled softly.
“It’s okay.” He ran a hand over your hair, smoothing it down. “It’s okay.”
You just sat there, enjoying his warmth and breathing to the sound of his heartbeat. Nobody had ever been able to comfort you like Jongdae did, his embrace, his smell, his voice, it calmed you.
The door opened again and Jongdae let go of you immediately, sitting up straight.
“Hey you okay Ang?” Chanyeol asked, looking at you. “You look a little pale.”
You nodded. “I’m fine, I just felt a bit lightheaded.”
“Did you take your meds?” Jongdae asked, frowning.
To your surprise you realised that you didn’t. “I think I forgot.”
Your best friend sigh, and Kyungsoo coughed. “Meds?” he asked.
You stood up with Jongdae’s help. “I take iron supplements when I’m on my period. Otherwise I get very drowsy and lightheaded. I probably forgot with things going on.”
He nodded, and you all walked back upstairs. Leaving the woman and her exasperatedly muffled screams behind you. It was a little warmer upstairs and Jongdae took you to the living room, sitting you down on the couch where Kyungsoo took place next to you. You leant against him, head on his shoulder, tired and worn out from the fight and lack of iron probably.
Soo wrapped an arm around your waist and let you sit like that. Baekhyun entered the room and frowned but didn’t ask, you probably looked sick. Jongdae came back quickly with a spare bottle of pill you had in this place. “Here.” He said, opened up and handing you two red capsules. “I’ll get you some water, and something to eat.”
He returned again, handing you the glass so you could take the pills and a banana. Which you peeled and ate slowly. They turned on the tv, and you sat much in silence. The question on Junmyeon’s wellbeing hanging between all of you.
Baekhyun was the first to ask. “Is he okay?”
You looked up with tired eyes. “I’m not sure, they’re probably still working on him. He lost a lot of blood, he got stabbed in the side and it turned into a pretty deep cut. He’ll be out for some time.”
“I hope he makes it.”
“So do I.” But all of you knew that there was a chance he might not make it. Lay couldn’t fix everything. If Suho died right now, the woman would have to face Xiumin’s wrath, and not just Lay’s. You weren’t sure which one was worse.
That’s when Sehun barged through the door, eyes wide and bloodshot. You had no idea where he came from but he’d obviously heard about what happened to Suho. With a bit of shaky legs you got up from the couch and walked over to him. He fell onto you, wrapping his lanky arms around your shoulder and you comforted him. To Sehun, Suho was the older brother he never had, and you knew he’d be the most affected by this.
He cried a little, and you sat him down on the couch. Jongdae came back with a cup of tea for him, and you wrapped one of the blankets around his shoulders.
“Sehun where did you come from?” you asked.
He swallowed thickly. “I was out scouting someone. Baekhyun called me, I ran all the way back here.” That explained why he was so sweaty and burning hot.
You put a hand on his leg, giving him a reassuring squeeze. “Lay’s taking care of him now, let’s hope for the best.”
“Ho-how far gone w-was he?” Sehun hiccuped.
“We managed to give him blood in the car while he was unconscious. He never regained consciousness, but he had a decent pulse when we came back here.” You weren’t going to lie about it, the chance that he wouldn’t make it was definitely there. “I’m sorry Sehun.”
He shook his head. “Y-you did what you could. I just don’t want…I don’t want to loose him.”
You rubbed his back up and down. “Shhh, we know Sehun, we know.”
Everyone in the room was silent again after that, you, Jongdae, Kyungsoo, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, even Sehun. You felt tired, and just really wanted to sleep.
“I’m going to go to bed, it’s late.” You stood up and Kyungsoo followed you, hand resting on your lower back.
Sehun looked up at you, wiping away a tear from the corner of his eyes.
“We’ll stay up with him.” Chanyeol said, meaning him and Baekhyun. “You look like you could use a good night sleep.”
You nodded with a soft smile as you and Kyungsoo left the room, Jongdae’s eye worryingly meeting yours for a second. He smile at you as you left.
“What really happened downstairs?” he asked when you reached his bedroom.
“Huh?”
“Angel…”
You frowned. “I really did get lightheaded, I really do take iron supplements. I can’t probe the first but I can prove the last, I could also prove that I’m on my period but I think that’s uncalled for.”
He pursed his lips, and you cupped his cheeks to kiss him.
“Don’t fret, it’s alright. I happens sometimes.”
Kyungsoo nodded, sitting down on the bed and stripping off his shirt. You reached out, trailing a finger over his collarbone. He shivered and you smiled. “Don’t tease me, not if you ain’t gon owe up to it.”
You arched an eyebrow. “Is that an invitation.”
“I’m not having sex with you on your period.”
“I can do other things.”
He squinted. “You almost passed out.”
“I’m standing right now.”
“Angel.”
“Kyungsoo.”
“Don’ t.”
“Okay.” You shrugged and walked towards the bathroom.
“Where you going?” he asked.
You turned around to look at him. “As mentioned, I’m on my period, I need to go to the bathroom or shit will go down in your bed. Trust me, you don’t want that.”
He scrunched up his nose and motioned for you to go. It was funny, most guys would’ve cried at the word period, he seemed to be okay. Points for Kyungsoo.
You found Xiumin sitting in the hallways, by the door of the sickroom where they were operating on Suho still probably. His hands were fisted in his hair, his head leant back against the wall. His feline eyes closed, his clothes still stained with blood.
Without saying anything, you sat down beside him with your legs outstretched.
“He’s alive.”
A deep sigh of relief passed your lips.
“But he’s still critical, the night will decide.” He whispered, a tear in his voice audible in the large empty warehouse. It echoed and you looked at him, his eyes were still closed, his lips parted. There was a smear of blood on his forehead, and fine flecks on the line of his neck.
“Minseok.” You breathed. “You should go to sleep.”
“I’m not sleeping till I know he’s okay.”
“Minseok.”
“What?”
“Do you know the woman who did this.”
He paused, opened his eyes, and looked at you. “No, I’ve never seen her before. And no, she’s not one of his known associates.”
You nodded slowly, you felt bad for him. He’d lost enough members, loosing Suho would tip the scales. He was too important to the team. There was sorrow in Xiumin ’s eyes, something you rarely saw but weren’t unfamiliar with.
“You can’t do anything whether you’re asleep or awake.”
“If it was Jongdae would you willingly go away and sleep?”
He hit it right on the spot and you chewed your cheek looking at him. “I’m sorry.”
There was a curt not and then the sound of a door. The two of you looked up, finding Lay taking of his surgical gloves and the woman he was with following him. With her hair now down she looked younger, maybe your age.
“What?” he snarled at you.
You rolled your eyes and got up. “I’m going to sleep, let’s hope he makes it.”
Lay opened his mouth, probably about to say something about your involvement. Xiumin pointed a finger at him. “If you go and fly at her now I’ll fucking snap your neck Yixing. I’m not in the mood for this. Leave your fucking feudal bullshit for another time.”
The younger set his jaw and moved walked the girl downstairs where he saw her out. Only to come back up and enter his room with a way too loud to be accidental slam of his door.
“You’re pale.” Minseok noted, inspecting you.
“You’re sad.”
“Go to bed y/n.” He grumbled, not having any intention of moving from his spot.
You stood up and walked silently into the living room, where Sehun was sleeping on the couch and Baekhyun and Chanyeol were playing a game on the playstation there. You didn’t recognise it, but reached into the cabinet to pull out two blankets. One you draped over Sehun’s curled up form on the couch, Suho had to pull through, if it was only for his sake.
“Angel?” Chanyeol whispered, looking at you with big eyes. “Why did Xiumin save you today?”
You frowned, thinking back to the fight at the abandoned building. In the rush someone had taken you to the floor aiming a knife for your neck and you had to fight him off with the length of Chanyeol’s rifle that you had plucked from the floor. You remembered how it had tipped dangerously close to your throat. And you remembered how easily Minseok had taken the man out by sliding his knife flawlessly between the man’s back ribs straight to his heart. “Don’t worry about it Chanyeol. We made it out, that’s what matters.”
He nodded and went back to his game, Baekhyun looked at you momentarily, but didn’t speak up. It was only a matter of time before everything would fall apart and they would all know. You couldn’t let that happen, it would ruin everything. “He needs me, even though he won’t admit it. Jobs like this, if Suho gets taken out, I take his place and fix everything where I can.”
“So if Suho dies…You’d take his place?” Baekhyun asked.
You shook your head, looking at your feet. “It’s not my place to be here permanently like that. I help out where I can, but I’m a rogue at heart. I work best on my own.”
Neither of the boys spoke anymore after that, and you left the room. Without another word and a heavy heart you walked past Minseok. You dropped the blanket in his lap and moved on. God damn angry at the man, at his actions and ruin, how he was using everyone for his own stupid games. This wasn’t part of the plan.
You went into the bathroom finally, taking a shower, and went back into Soo’s room.
“You took long.”
“I got held up halfway.” You said, slipping under the covers and enjoying the warmth of his skin against yours. “Suho’s is alive, but critical state still. They’re monitoring him. We won’t know till the next day comes.
“Then we sleep.” He said, kissing your temple and holding you close.
***
You were awoken by the door opening and thudding lightly against the wall. So you blinked your eyes open and found Xiumin leaning in the opening. His shoulder against the post, hair falling over his forehead, arms crossed over his chest. He looked younger like this, less harsh. Wearing sweatpants and a long sleeved white shirt. “He’s asking for you.”
Kyungsoo woke up behind you at the voice of his boss and startled, pulling the covers closer. “Excuse me?”
“Oh don’t try, I already knew. I’m not in a mood to go into this,” he said, motioning at the two of you, “right now. We’ll discuss that later. Angel, Suho’s awake, he’s asking for you.”
You nodded and stood up quickly, snatching your jeans from the chair and quickly pulling them on along with Kyungsoo’s sweater. Minseok walked out in front of you, leading you to the room.
Suho was in the hospital bed, hooked up to various threads and machines that showed his vital functions. Lay was checking something, and of course looked up annoyed at your presence. The other however, smiled weakly at you and motioned you close.
“Lay can you leave, I need to talk to her.” He asked, voice extremely hoarse and weak.
The surgeon narrowed his eyes at you but did as his friend asked, and left the room with Minseok.
“How are you feeling?” you asked, looking at him.
He chuckled dryly. “Considering the circumstances? I think I’m alright. The morphine works to keep the pain at bay but I can feel how weak I am, I lost a lot of blood I heard. I’ll pull through, nothing I haven’t done before, this.”
You thought back to the time when Suho got shot and practically died, bleeding in the corner of a garage. Till today you were still unsure of what had happened, but you remembered it. “You wanted to talk to me?”
“Yeah.” He tried to sit up a little but groaned loudly at the pain. “I need you to call Jangmi and tell her what happened. I ditched her because they were following me, had her call a cab. She didn’t take it too well, I’m a little worried.”
There was obvious worry in his voice, and this was important, you’d have done it without him asking because you knew she probably didn’t know. You were glad she got away safely. “I’ll talk to her.”
“Tell her not to worry.”
“Junmyeon, she loves you, she’ll worry.”
“Then tell her I’ll call her as soon as I can.”
“Does Xiumin know yet?”
He sighed and looked at the door. “I need to tell him don’t I?”
You nodded. “He’s your best friend, he cares about you whether he shows it or not. If this is getting dangerous, and if they saw her, they might come after her. We can never know if we took out everyone. I’m sure he’ll…understand.”
“He’ll get angry.”
“At first, trust me when I say that he’ll understand. Explain it to him, tell him you love her. That you need her. That you trust her, tell her I trust her. If he’s a good boss he’ll let it slide, if he’s a good friend he’ll be happy for you.”
Junmyeon coughed, groaned, and sighed again. “I told him about you and D.O.”
“He already knew.”
“What?”
“He’s not stupid, to be honest he probably suspects you’re dating someone.”
“He didn’t tell me he knew when he sent me out.” He grumbled.
You chuckled. “He probably thought we were just fucking or whatever. The boss can only see so far.”
“You’re telling me he saw through you?”
With a roll of your eyes you told him; “If he find me wearing D.O’s clothes in D.O’s beds he can put 1+1 together. But my feelings are a little harder to read.”
“Just…please call Jangmi. I need her to know that I’m okay, that she’s okay. For all I know they went after her and…god.” He closed his eyes. “I don’t think I’ve ever been this afraid.”
You touched his shoulder. “She’ll be fine. If they really were after Minseok they’re not going to get anything from going after her. It’s useless.”
“You know they can do it out of revenge.”
“I’m going to go and call her okay. Once I get a hold of her I’ll be back.”
“Thank you Angel.”
“You should thank me, watch me try and save your relationship again. I should be payed.”
He chuckled and shooed you away.
Outside the door Xiumin was waiting for you. “What?” you asked.
The boss narrowed his eyes. “What did you talk about?”
“None of your business.”
“My group, my business.”
“If you’d been nicer you’d have already known.” You shrugged. “But you like to pretend to be a dick, so that’s what you get. They start looking for other people to talk to.”
He pulled you back by your arm when you tried to walk away. “Are you saying they need you?”
“They need someone who cares Minseok,” you said, roughly pulling your arm from his grip.
“Where are you going?” he called when you were halfway down the stairs.
You turned around. “I’m going to get Suho’s girlfriend.” You left Minseok with his silent stare, hoping he’d not go inside and talk to Suho. That wasn’t your intention. The fact that he didn’t immediately come after you told you he probably already knew indeed.
When you reached your bike that was parked in the garage, you put in your earpiece and dialled Jangmi’s number before you drove off. The phone rang a few times before she picked up.
“You know most people hang up after the phone rings for 8 times.”
“You know most people don’t pick up at all when people like me call.”
“What do you want?” She snarled
You chuckled as you took a sharp turn. “Are you home?”
She was silent for a little. “Why do you care?”
“That’s a yes, I’m coming to pick you up, don’t go anywhere.”
“I have work in an hour.”
“Don’t think so.” You mused, stopping for a red light. “Wait for me, I’m taking you to Suho.”
“I don’t want to see him.”
You sighed, and pulled the gas up again when the light turned green. The wind was catching at your exposed neck and you should’ve worn a scarf or something with your jacket. “Jangmi, please just wait for me. You’ll understand when I get there.”
“Hang up the phone Angel.”
“I can’t I’m driving.”
“You can reach.”
“I’m on a motorbike.”
Another pause. “I’m not getting on the back of your motorbike.”
“Jangmi god damnit. Please just wait for me, come with me, it’ll explain itself.”
She rudely hung up the phone without saying anything else, and you sped up a little, passing some cards, so you’d get there sooner. Jangmi’s apartment was in the centre of the city, and you wondered if she really had that good of a job or if Suho helped her pay for it.
You rang her doorbell, and to your surprise, she opened the door for you. Not to her apartment, but to the complex. She had been waiting for you downstairs. “I’m not letting you into my home.”
“Fair enough.” You said.
“Tell me his lame excuse for ditching me last night before I get on the back of that thing.” She motioned towards your bike that was neatly parked in front of the building.
You sighed and handed her a helmet. “He was being followed, he noticed, sent you home to save you. He got kidnapped, they stabbed him, we were there just in time. But he lost a lot of blood and needed to get fixed. He crept through the eye of the needle Jangmi.”
Her eyes were wide and she clasped a hand over her mouth. “I…I’m…I feel so bad.”
You touched her arm lightly. “I understand how you reacted. But it was for your own good. Understand that situations like that might happen more often. He’s really concerned for your wellbeing. And until we figure out who this group is it might be better you stay with us.”
“His boss, he can’t know.” She whispered.
“We’ll take care of that, for now it’s important that you’re safe, and that he’s safe.” You lead her to your bike. “Xiumin isn’t going to harm you.”
“Minseok?”
“Yeah, Minseok.”
“What about all the others?” she asked, when you stepped on.
You chuckled. “They’ll be more excited about having a girl there. You’ll get a low of questions, they’ll take you in like family. Trust me. Just watch out for the one with the messy black hair and the side shaves. Probably reading a book, grumpy. He’s a bit of a…rarity.”
She nodded slowly and you helped her get on behind you. “Is this safe.” She put the helmet on.
“Just hold on tight,” you laughed as you drove off into the day.
***
“You’re what?” Baekhyun asked with wide eyes, looking at Jangmi who was kind of hiding behind you.
Jongdae slapped him across the back of his head. “Leave her alone, let her see Suho. I’m sure we’ll get an explanation later on today. “
You smiled at your friend, and guided Jangmi towards the room Suho was in. She looked around with big eyes at the warehouse.
“You all live here?”
“They do, I don’t.”
“Well, she sort of does.” Minseok said coming around the corner. He had a light smile playing on his lips and extended his heavily ringed hand towards her. She skeptically looked at it, but took it. He kissed the top of her hand. “Xiumin, it’s nice to finally put a face to the girl.”
She looked baffled and you had your eyes trained on him. “Jangmi.” She replied. “You knew?”
“I had an idea. He did a good job at hiding you though, I must say. We’ll leave the formalities for later, he’s waiting for you.”
Jangmi looked from the door to you, and you gave her a short nod to show her everything was okay. She entered the room, and then quickly let the door fall shut. You could hear there voices, elated and worried.
“How long have you know?” he asked you, leaning on the balustrade.
You came up beside him, looking down at the boxes and chairs and cabinets. “A few months.”
“Was he scared to tell me.”
“You don’t allow it.”
“It’s for their own good Angel, you of all people should know that.”
You chuckled. “I do, I really do. But I also know what it’s like to need someone to love and love you. You know that too Minseok. Everybody needs a shoulder to lean on and a heart to hold.”
He breathed out. “And you have two.”
“Are you going to lecture me now.”
“We agreed on this, you and I.”
You clicked your tongue. “Would you rather have me date someone outside of the group again?”
He turned around, leaning with his back against the railing and giving your a skeptical look. “Angel, I’m not telling you this to play one of your guessing games.”
You cocked your head to the side. “You want me gone, I know, I understand. But I wouldn’t be here if they didn’t need me, if you didn’t need me. I’m already way too much part of their lives, and me not coming here will only have them coming to place. You’re still not understanding that trust is rewarded with trust. In both ways, because I give you my trust, and I don’t get yours back, but you also don’t see that if you trust them you’ll gain theirs. They follow you blindly and they’re partially stupid for it. If I was them I wouldn’t, I wouldn’t follow my boss on a blind mission. As a rogue I always make sure I know every detail before I jump into it. You’re slipping up, and they’re catching on.”
“I’m not slipping up.”
“Chanyeol suspects something, he’s worried. And if Chanyeol is worried it won’t be long before Baekhyun and Sehun are in on it.” You said, and tapped your fingers against the metal bar. “If anything happens to them on your watch Min, I’m not forgiving you.”
He scoffed loudly. “Now you’re being hypocritical.”
“I’m not!” you snapped.
There was anger bubbling beneath the surface now, for both of you. “Angel, for fucks sake. You know why I don’t want you to do this. Because you’re nothing but trouble. I keep you around for jobs, because strangely, you’re good at what you do. But when it comes to relationships, you tend to be quite inadequate of sustaining safety. Now I don’t care about Jongdae, as I mentioned before, but Kyungsoo, you can’t have him.”
You cracked your knuckles. “Don’t accuse me, ever, of knowingly endangering anybody. Don’t you dare. What you’re doing right now, and what I did are not the same thing.”
“Not?”
“Don’t you dare Minseok, you’re purposely trying to aggravate me and I’m not having it. You know this is dangerous, and you know you’re involving them. I never asked for your help, that you got hurt because of me is of your own choice.”
A door opened, you heard it behind you.
“Yes Angel, and that’s why I said I should’ve left you for dead when I had the chance.”
A warm hand circled around your wrist, familiar and large. “Angel?” Jongin mumbled. You didn’t turn around to face him, looking down on Minseok.
“What is it Jongin?” your voice was a little too harsh and you felt him flinch. “Sorry.” You turned your back to Minseok, who you heard walk off shortly after that.
He stepped a little closer and wrapped his arms around you for a hug, leaning his head on your shoulder. “M sorry, I could just…I was in my room and I could hear everything.”
It kind of baffled you, you managed to forget that you were right outside Jongin’s room right now. You wrapped an arm around his waist and cupped the back of his head with the other. “I’m sorry Jongin, I…It’s alright. Let’s go sit for a second.”
You pulled him into his room and you sat down on his bed. He pulled up his legs, sitting like a little kid. “What’s going on.”
Sighing, you pinched the bridge of your nose. “Listen, if I tell you this, you can’t talk to anybody about it but me and Jongdae. You got that?”
“Not even Kyungsoo?”
“No, especially not him.”
Jongin nodded slowly.
“Do you remember the man I told you about, the one we chased away, some over 3 years ago?”
Another slow nod.
“Xiumin is looking for him.”
A gasp.
“He’s looking for revenge.”
Silence
“Jongin?”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t be afraid. I’m not going to let him hurt you.”
Jongin’s full lips parted, chocolate eyes stared into yours. “Why would he do that?”
You took his hand in yours. “Sometimes, you can’t let go off things until their settled.”
“I remember, when I just joined, it hadn’t happened that long ago. Even though it took another good six months for me to figure out what had actually happened. I remember, what Xiumin was like then. He was a lot more….vicious when I just joined, it was to a point where it was scary. Over the years he became better.”
“He did, but he can’t let go.”
“Do you think he’ll find him?”
“I don’t think he needs to find him, he just needs to get on his radar. That’ll be enough to get him here.”
“Aren’t you afraid? After everything?”
You smiled sadly. “I am, but if I need to be strong if this is really going to happen.”
“Do you think Suho’s attack has something to do with it?”
That was something to think about really, but you just spoke out your first train of thoughts. “Logically thinking it could be. But he’s not that stupid and not that forward. He won’t come straight for them like that. It’ll be disguised, proper work, planned out well, thought through. He’s thorough, he only works with the best, but he’s messed up in a way that is hard to understand. He gets whatever he wants, no matter what he has to do for it. He won’t be so sloppy to kidnap Suho in public, probably alert his girlfriend, have him in the car with a tracker, and then get beaten. If he comes for us, it’ll be out hardest fight yet. And the chance that we’ll loose someone is bigger than that we’ll all make it.”
There were tears in Jongin’s eyes. “I don’t want to.” He whispered, voice cracking.
You pulled him close, leaning your chin on his head. His arms around your waist, fisting the back of your sweater. “I promise you Jongin, you won’t stay long enough to see this fight. Even if it’s the last thing I do. I’ll get you out of here before that happens. He won’t touch a hair on your head, I won’t let that happen.”
Jongin sniffled, and you felt a tear against the side of your neck. He was afraid, trembling, this was past his boundaries. He slept with women, he tricked them, he could pickpocket like no other, and Jongdae taught him some other traits in thievery. But fighting, fighting something like this wasn’t for him. How he managed to shoot the guy that tried to attack you on that raid was really beyond you. You’d never seen him shoot someone so easily. It must’ve been reflex, or purely for the point of saving you. He wasn’t in danger, so it was probably fear for you. This was fear for himself, for all of you. This was too big for all of you to handle.
“I-I still see the face of that guy I shot, who tried to attack you.” Typical Jongin, always on your train of thoughts.
“Shhh. It’s okay, you did it to save me, it’s alright.”
“No more.”
“No more Jongin, I promise.”
You held him until he fell asleep in your lap, and then you pulled the covers over him and propped a pillow under his head. With a smile you ran your fingers through his hair, soft and thick. He was so peaceful when he slept, lips parted and nose occasionally scrunching up. Little mumbled and tiny snores. You were worried for him, because of how close you were to him. He’s a target, a big red target with no defences.
The door very, very slowly opened and you looked up from Jongin’s sleeping form. It was Kyungsoo. You pressed your finger against your lips to tell him be quiet, and with a heavy feeling in your chest you followed him outside.
“What happened?” he asked when you were in the hallway.
You shook your head in desperation. “It’s all a little much for him.”
“He told me, you know.” And those 3 first words made your heart skip a beat and breath stick in your throat. Suddenly your nerves were on high and you were afraid. “About how he got in here.”
Relief, thank god. “He did?”
“Yeah…I feel bad for him. He’s not made for this place. Almost like Baekhyun, but worse. He has the wrong assets, I don’t understand how he does it, with all the women.”
Kyungsoo luckily didn’t know every part of the story, because that wouldn’t end well. “He manages, but he’s at the brink. He shouldn’t be here.”
“He shouldn’t.” Kyungsoo said, looking down at his feet. “But there’s no way out is there?”
You bit your lip, doubting about whether you should give this away. “There’s always a way.”
“You’re kidding?”
“It’s easier for some than others, it’s possible. With the right people doing it, and the right person wanting to leave.”
Kyungsoo took your arm and forced you to look at him, instead of sheepishly looking away. “You’re telling me you’re capable of getting someone out of this life?”
“Yes, I am, okay?”
“Would you?”
“What?”
“Get Jongin out of here?”
Strangely enough you found yourself nodding. “But I need to get through your majesty Minseok first. I can’t just poof him out of here. I’ll need his approval, it’s easier to do with rogues.”
Kyungsoo looked baffled. “Jongdae told me you can’t leave.”
Oh, that explained it, you felt kind of bad about that. “I, personally, as in me, I can’t leave. My ties are a little too deep for that to go safe. I mean I could but I’d live tucked away in dark corners for the rest of my life. But Jongin’s notoriety count is low, It’ll be easier.”
“Angel.” Xiumin’s voice appeared behind you.
“What?” you snarled, very harshly so.
“My office, now.”
“Get lost.”
“Now, Angel, or I’ll drag you by your hair.”
With a groan you faced him. “You sound like my father.”
He arched an eyebrow at you and you realised what you’d said.
“Get lost.”
“Angel, I’m not asking you again. We need to talk business.”
You clicked your tongue and clenched your jaw. “Fine, Kyungsoo make sure that like…if Jangmi comes back, that the dogs don’t eat her alive.”
“Will do,” he said, and walked off slowly.
But you didn’t budge, staring down Xiumin. “Please don’t tell me you found him.”
“Lay got something out of her.”
“I don’t want to know, I really don’t.” You shook your head.
“It’s about Jongdae.”
You paused, a little too long. “Don’t use him against me, don’t you dare lie to me about this.” You growled lowly.
He shrugged. “I could also not tell you, but she knew things. Things that I didn’t know. So I wonder where she got it.”
There was that blazing sense of anger bubbling under your skin again. It was a looming sense of danger, a sense of betrayal, of wrongdoing. “You’re playing me.”
“His mom was a singer, his dad was a woodworker.”
You stopped, everything stopped, everything except fear. Fear, your heart pounding, noise rushing through your ears. “Minseok.” You said with a shaky breath.
“You know something I don’t Angel?” he smirked lightly.
“If she knows that, then she works for him.”
His smirk faltered.

Miyong pov
There was a knock at her door and she put down the knife where she was cutting up vegetables. “Coming!” she called. Her apartment wasn’t big, just a living room, a bathroom, and a bedroom.
She stopped when she reached the door. It was Jongin. He was dressed in a black leather jacket and light wash skinny jeans. There was hesitation in her before she opened the door. “Jongin.”
“Hey.” He smiled, beautifully so, as always. And it still made her heart thump even though everything she’d learnt. “Can I come in?”
She nodded and stepped aside to let him in, he shivered and unzipped his jacket. “I thought we agreed to meet at the studio.”
He looked at her, licking his lips absentmindedly. “Yeah, I know. But I thought w-we maybe should talk before…you know…because of everything.”
His little stutter was quite, and by the way he fidgeted with his dark brown sweater she saw how nervous he was. That’s when she noticed. “How did you find out where I live?”
“Oh…We…can you know…find that information. It’s a little rude, I know…but if you deem me not safe to be around a bunch of kids I guess it’s easier to know that. Before we make a scene there. “I don’t mean to intrude, if you want me to leave I’ll go.” He mumbled and moved back to the door.
Miyong quickly reached out for his wrist to pull him back. “Wait. Come sit.” She pulled him into the living room and sat him down on the couch. “I’m making spaghetti, do you want some?”
“Miyong…I don’t want to impose.”
“You’re not imposing, I’m asking you. Spaghetti, red sauce.”
“Is there eggplant?” he asked, scrunching his nose.
“You don’t like eggplant?”
He shook his head making a disgusted face, almost like a little kis. She couldn’t help but laugh.
“There’s not eggplant, it’s safe.”
“Then gladly.”
He got up and helped her clean some thing and cook the pasta. They found themselves eating It on the couch, the room smelling delicious. The pasta was maybe a little overcooked, but it was good nonetheless.
But after a while she thought the silence was getting uncomfortable and they were avoiding the elephant in the room. “Talk to me.” She said.
He looked up form his plate, wiping away some sauce from underneath his lip. “What did she tell you?”
“I want to hear it from you.”
Jongin sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. He looked so different from how he had last monday. His hair was falling down parted in the middle, and his eyes stood more…innocent. As if he had completely changed. She remembered the chill she’d felt when shed seen him in the vest, with the white button underneath. The slope of his back as he nonchalantly walked across the room talking to people. Most of the change was in his face though, like his eyes were less young and his…she couldn’t describe it properly but she saw it.
“She wasn’t lying, Angel. I told you about my family, they pay my expenses, and that kind of stuff. I live with them. The group, gang, mafia, what you want to call it, they’re my family.”
Some shitty family you have…she thought.
“We do a lot of illegal things, I won’t lie about that. We fraud, we con, we deal, we kill.”
“You kill?” she said, eyes wide, staring at him. No, not him, not Jongin.
There was a shaky breath from him, the quiver of his lip. “If there’s no other option, yes. But I hate it, I’ve only killed 3 times. And it makes me feel disgusted.” He whispered the last bit, like nobody was allowed to hear.
“Three times?”
“I’m sorry. It’s just that…for family…If I have a choice I won’t do it. But I can’t let a loved on die when I have the option to save them. But I know it’s not good, and this is not the life I wanted. I wanted something simple, after dancing, but that dream broke, and things were shitty for a while and then…this came along. It’s where I’ve been ever since.”
She didn’t reply, she thought about it, looked at him. He looked sad, with his shoulders hunched forward, chin tipped down.
“I know it’s bad what we do, and that me being a lawyer is illegal. But I just…I want to be normal Miyong.” He said, and she heard his voice crack.
“Why didn’t you go home Jongin, to your family, your real family?”
He stopped, it’s like he stopped breathing. His eyes staring at her, and she saw tears well up, immediately feeling guilty for asking. “I…don’t want to talk about them. My family now…they…without them I would be much worse of. If it wasn’t for Angel, I don’t know where I’d have been.”
She couldn’t stop herself, the words were out before she could stop it. “She’s brainwashing you, Jongin, she seems like an awful manipulative person.”
“She’s not, I know she tends to come across as a bitch. But she’s like my older sister, I love her. She took care of me when I had nobody else, and yes she indirectly got me into this place. But she didn’t want me to. There was no other option at that time.”
“So you’re not happy with them?”
“I’m happy in a way, like. I’m glad to have found friends, to not be alone. I learnt a lot there. But it’s not where I want to stay, it’s something I want to leave behind when I can.”
Miyong was quiet her mind was racing a hundred miles an hour. Was she about to be friend or whatever they are with a criminal, someone who killed, who broke the law time and time again. His heart seemed to be in the right place, he was back to his usual self again. Shy, gentle. The image of him holding a gun was sickening. Was it worth it?
“Why did you become a lawyer?”
“They helped me get in here, if that’s what you’re guessing at. But I’ve always wanted to help people. After dancing. I thought many times while I was dancing, what I wanted to do if it flunked. And I originally wanted to be a police officer, but that was a little tricky. So I settled for lawyer, I turned out to really like it. And if you think this whole thing is disgusting and you don’t want to see me anymore, I understand. I won’t hold it against you.”
She wasn’t even sure if he liked her, but something in the way he looked at her now, the way he sat there in the corner of the couch, told her he did. It was like her heart knew, but her mind refused to process it. She liked him, a lot, a lot more than she let on. Was there a use in trying, and could she even live with being with someone like him. She was labelling him, she caught herself. Criminal. And she wondered if it was even right, in a sense. He seemed so adamant about not wanting to be there. Maybe he wasn’t playing.
“I…What about all the women at the party. You were flirting, I saw, you never flirted with me. But Angel said you hated it.” She felt something bitter saying the other girls name, but she saw the look on Jongin’s face when he talked about her. He did really care for her.
Jongin pursed his lips. “You weren’t supposed to see that, but yeah, I hate it.”
“It’s just flirting to what? Why?”
“It’ s not just flirting.”
“Huh?”
He bit his lower lip, teeth sinking into supple flesh. “Sometimes I sleep with them.”
She gasped in shock and then furrowed her eyebrows, running a hand through her own hair. “You have sex with random women…for your job?”
There was a short nod, a blush, and a look of shame on his face. Then something hardened, and he stated. “It’s just sex, nothing else. It’s not important.”
Just sex…just sex…She’d never slept with someone randomly before. Well she’d had a boyfriend who was her first, they’d dated for a year or two, and then a year ago she’d started this thing with another guy. They went way too fast and it ended up ruining everything in the end.
“I…I need to think about all this.” She said, looking at him.
He cleared his throat. “Yeah of course, take all the time you need. I’ll just go then.” Jongin moved to get up but she stopped him.
“I’ll put it clear for you. I like you Jongin, a lot. And I can’t get a read on if you like me too, not properly. I love that you’re shy and gentle and this whole image you’re sketching for me is conflicting. I can’t properly wrap my head around it, like I can’t believe it. I didn’t expect this, not you. And I sense there’s something that got you there, that it wasn’t your choice, and I think you’re not telling me because you’re scared. Or not ready to tell me. You don’t have to tell me, yet at least. I can see that this wasn’t where you wanted to be, but somehow you did go for it. You continued it, you killed, you use women. I just…I can’t see the clear.”
He was silent, studying her features, almost like he was waiting for her to say something more. Or thinking of what to say, not knowing what to say. But he did speak up in the end. “I’m sorry, for bringing this on you, that you have to carry this with you for the rest of your life. It’s not what I wanted. I’m sorry for lying to you , for making you think I was a normal, good man. I’m not I understand, I don’t want you to think that. But…I like you too and I was stupid enough to fall for you and think there was a possibility it could work out.”
She cut him off there. “So…you say you’d better just not fallen for someone, ever? Like this will be part of your past for the rest of your life.”
“It’s better isn’t it? For most of us. I don’t think I could love someone like the people I work with.” He rubbed the bridge of his nose, and sneezed. She found it so cute, he had his legs pulled up to his chest, leaning his chin on his knees. Like a little kid, but the sorrow in his life made him look much older. She noticed then that he had really suffered, that he was broken. Something in him wasn’t well. He wanted to be normal, he was normal. He wasn’t like Angel, she had that air, the dominance. Jongin just seemed like a scared boy, lost in a world that isn’t his.
She took a stab in the dark, deciding to take his soft hand in hers. He looked up at her with a pained expression. “Do you think you could love me?” she asked.
“I definitely think I can.” He whispered.
Miyong smiled then, and pulled him in for a hug. He was warm, and she felt how rapid his heart was beating. His face buried in her neck, and her hands fisting his sweater. “Please don’t make me regret this.” She said in his shoulder.
His hand came up to cradle the back of her head. “I promise.”
***
Soon she found herself driving her and Jongin to the dance studio in the city centre. It wasn’t the same studio where she’d gone when she was younger, but it was from the same group. Just a different location.
“Okay, so Minseok is your boss?”
“Yeah.” He said. “But he goes by Xiumin too.”
“Do you have a code name?”
He chuckled. “They’re not as much code names. More like aliases. We use them depending on the situation. In your world, as we say it, the legal world, we go by our real names. Like I do when I’m at the internship. But when we do something underground we go by another. I do have one.”
“What is it?”
“Kai.”
“Kai?”
“Kai.”
“I like the sound of that.” She decided. “Kim Kai. It’s short and simple. So Angel then, I guess that’s not her real name?”
There was a short silence. “It’s not, but most of us tend to call her that, it’s more of a nickname.”
She let herself briefly look at him in the passenger seat, he was tracing the lined in the door. “Do you call her that?”
“Why are you asking about her, she bothers you doesn’t she?”
“I don’t like her.”
“She’s really not that bad, once you get to know her, you will see.”
Miyong didn’t answer with more than a short snort.
“I call her by her real name and by Angel.”
“What’s her real name then?”
Jongin looked at her, and she looked back. “If she wants you to know her real name she’ll give it to you.”
“Her card said Cheonsa.”
“Second alias, she’s not part of our group. She works solo, but she helps us out. She’s so to speak a family friend, but it’s why she has way more aliases.”
Miyong turned into the parking lot by the studio and parked the car. “We’re running a little late, let’s go.” Jongin followed behind her, she was wearing black tights and a white sweater that hung of one shoulder, underneath a dark blue woollen coat. She didn’t find Jongin’s clothes so helpful for dance classes, but then again, he couldn’t really dance with his leg.
They entered the room and she found a few parents with their kids. “MIYONG!!!” Jeonna called running to her and hugging her legs. “Who is the boy?”
Suddenly Jongin found himself with 12 sets of little round eyes staring at him. “Is that Miyong’s boyfriend!” “Ah, he’s handsome!” “He looks like prince charming!” all kinds of chants came from the little kids, and he blushed and kind of stepped closer to her.
“What did you tell them?” he asked, eyes wide. A girl came up to him, pulling at his sweater, so he bent down. “Hey there.”
“Are you going to marry Miyong?”
“Ah, Sasha,” Miyong said, “Don’t ask such weird things, you’ll scare him.” Then she kind of stood around and faced the group. “Everyone, this is Jongin, he’s coming along for the class today. He used to dance for the Lee-Young academy.”
There were some ah’s and oh’s and Jongin seemed really flustered. By then the moms left to say bye to their children, and Miyong got ready to start the class.
It was nice to see Jongin with the kids, especially Sasha took a liking to him, but they all stared at him a lot. When he got out of his shell he was actually really good with them. Showing them the moves he could. His leg might be busted, but his poise was still perfect. So graceful and beautiful to watch. The way his leg stretched perfectly straight, or his back bent in a perfect curve. It was on a level she’d never achieve. And that thinking he hadn’t danced in over 3 years, like it was in his blood.
He’d picked up some of the girls for some form of mini lift, they loved it. At their age, between 5 and 8, there wasn’t much actual ballet going on. The movements weren’t to difficult, and they weren’t wearing any real slippers yet.
It was just the way he acted with them that made her heart swell. How he smiled widely and played with them, he seemed so happy and peaceful and normal. She loved his smile so much, and to see him sad like he had seemed at her place, it broke her heart. This suited him so much better. And the kind of crazy thought came in her head that he would be such a great and loving dad later in life. It gave her butterflies in her stomach.
How she managed to had fallen for a con artist this fast was beyond her, maybe he had tricker her. But right now she was taking a leap of faith, trusting her heart that told her he was good. That his intentions were right, that he didn’t want this.
“Miyong!!!” Jeonna came up to her again. “Can you dance with Jongin?”
“Huh?” she was dumbfounded.
“Yeah aren’t you going to dance?” Sasha said, from Jongin’s arms where he’d picked her up. Daeul was hanging around his neck, legs dangling a little, cheeky little smile on his face.
Jongin looked at her, and she blushed, and he blushed. But then he smiled, and put Sasha and Daeul down. The he walked over on bare feet, and bowed. “May I have this dance.”
This was the first time he’d make her blush this much, she wasn’t usually a shy person. “Of course.” She muttered and took his hand. He pulled her close, taking the lead as it should be. She was a little worried at first, about his leg. But as long as he seemed okay she wanted to do this. She wanted to. The way his hands rested on her hips, guiding her, or his hand in hers. He spun her around, and even lifted her up a little. Perfect posture again, and she tried her best not to look blank by him. There were butterflies everywhere, sparks where he touched her bare shoulder as he tipped her back in the end.
All the kids were cheering and clapping. And then he suddenly pulled her up to his chest, she landed with her hands against him. Their noses almost touching, his breath fanning out over her lips as she looked into his eyes from this close. Colours golden brown running into darker ones around his pupil.
“Ew! Don’t kiss!” one of the kids squealed, and then there was a whole lot of screaming about cooties and kissing being disgusting. It was loud, and it made Jongin laugh out loud, a sound that her ears loved more than his smile. His laugh was a little dorky and a lot of loud, but it was so genuine.
He stayed by her side, hand on her lower back, warm, as the parents came and picked up their kids again. They found themselves alone in the studio, the large room and wide mirror. She looked at their reflections. Compared to him she looked short and chubby, and not like a dancer at all. He was gorgeous, like a model and she had to look away.
“Hey.” He said, tipping up her chin from where she looked down. “Don’t do that. You’re beautiful, and I don’t want you to think otherwise.”
“You’re very observant.” She said shyly.
He smiled at her, pulling her close, cupping her cheeks. “It comes with the job. But please, don’t look at yourself like that.”
He was so close, and his hands were soft and warm and big. She took a hold of his wrists and pulled herself up, connecting her lips to his. She felt him still out of shock, and she wanted to pull away, afraid she crossed the line. However, before she could he put a hand on her lower back to keep her close.
His lips moved against hers, as he angled his head slightly. There were as soft as she imagined they’d be, his lips. And she leant up on her tippy toes to wrap and arm around his neck. She parted her lips when he softly swiped his tongue over her bottom lip. He was so gentle, as he kissed her, taking the lead even then. She pushed closer against him, carding a hand through his soft hair, and he groaned softly. The light scrape of his teeth over her bottom lip as she broke the kiss made her toes curl.
They were both breathing a little faster, and she felt his heart thump under her hand. Fast like it had before, but not for the same reason.
“Jongin?”
“Yeah.” He breathed against her lips.
“Promise me something else.”
“Anything.”
She pecked his lips, once. “Promise me that…you won’t keep doing this. That at some point you’ll just become a lawyer, or anything else.” It was something she maybe couldn’t ask of him. But she just didn’t want to date an active criminal, or a criminal at all. For him though, she was ready to make the exception. Still, she didn’t want to jeopardise her own career chances.
“If you’ll be my girlfriend.” He whispered shyly, looking at her with a light blush on his cheeks.
They sealed the promise with a long, slow kiss, that left them breathless and smiling.

Kai pov
The office was in it’s usual bustling state of busy. Sounds of rustling paper, the copy machines, nails on keyboard filling his ears while he was going over his merger case. The two companies had a lot in common but their client was trying to get more out of the deal. He was searching through databases and e-mailing people to try and get the information he needed to let everything go as smoothly as possible.
His booth was at the far corner of the room, and he had the wall on his left and the rest of the room on his right. He liked it, this way he could see everything. It wasn’t too big of a room, there were about 10 paralegals and interns in here. Everyone knew each other by now, much to his tries of keeping to himself. The people were nice and it was nice to be around them, sometimes they went out for a drink after work, or all got lunch together.
The girl beside him leant over the booth, her head on her hands on the small wall. “What are you working on?” she asked, warm caramel curls falling over the edge and framing her face.
For a second he looked up a little shocked. “Oh, merger, nothing big.”
She nodded and smiled. “You got a lot of work left?”
He smiled back at her, for a second he had forgotten she was there, too caught up in his work. But she was always in the booth beside him. Her name was Miyong.
“Nah, I’ll probably be done early tonight, really. I need to study for ethics anyway and Nigel said I could leave if I finish this and it’s okay.” He leant back in his chair, closing his eyes for a second. “I’m drained.”
“How about we go for lunch?” she asked, cocking her head to one side. There was something so nice about the way she smiled, big brown eyes sparkling with excitement. She was a really nice girl, and they’ve been hanging out for a while now, but he hadn’t really done anything. For now they were just friends. But she was nice to be around, and she was open and sweet and calm. On the other hand she was a little childlike, like him, and when she talked about something she loved her voice sped up to a point where he could barely understand.
“What are you thinking to get? You want to go sit somewhere?” he asked.
She shook her head, curls bouncing. “I was thinking to get coffee and a bagel or something and then walk for a bit. It’s not that warm but the sun’s out. We can go to the park.”
“Sure!” he said, and he wondered if he sounded a bit too excited then. Whether the smile on his face was a little too big. Whether she knew that he liked her this much.
They got up and went to get their coats. He was wearing black pants and a simple white button up, she was wearing a grey skirt with a dark pink coloured turtleneck that framed her body perfectly but wasn’t too tight. Both of them wore long coats, her brown and his black. And they walked outside with their hands stuffed in their pockets, making sure to sign off at the secretary.
Anna, the secretary smiled at them. She was probably over fifty but she was the nicest lady. One time, when Jongin had to work late she had brought him something to eat. “You love birds, so cute together.” She mused and winked at them.
Jongin felt the warmth spread up his cheek and neck and he rubbed the back of his head. Miyong chuckled and pulled him outside. She walked with her arm linked through his, hands in her pockets to protect them from the cold.
Miyong leant against him, shivering a little and he chuckled. “I thought you said it wasn’t that cold.”
“No, I said the sun was shining, but we’re still in the shade.” She mumbled and walked a little faster. Her usual place to get coffee was just outside the park, she’d taken him once before, their coffee was really good.
It was a small barista place hidden between the larger restaurants their terraces. They arrived pretty quickly and as soon as they left the tall building lined streets and the sun his their face he did feel it was warmer. He took in the feeling, and hoped spring would come soon. Sadly it was only just becoming winter and harsher times were to come.
“Ah, I want to go to the park when there’s snow.” She said randomly as they entered, it was warmer inside and the fresh scent of coffee filled his senses. He loved the smell but for quite some time he didn’t like the taste. But now he liked it a lot better with sugar.
“You still drink caramel macchiato?” he asked her as they stood in line.
She nodded pulled her arm from his to reach into her bag, he touched her arm to stop her. “I’ll buy.”
“No you won’t, this was my idea.”
“Don’t even try.” He said. “I’m paying and that’s it.”
She pouted and crossed her arms over her chest. “I’ll buy food then.”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine.”
A light chuckle left her lips as he ordered their coffees and paid. “What?” he asked.
She shrugged. “Nothing really, you have a nice smile. You’re always really polite, I just don’t see it that often with guys like you.”
He frowned at her, a little confused. “How do you mean?”
They were waiting in the back until the barista had made their coffees and he looked down at her. She was quite a bit shorter than him, but it suited her.
“Oh, just…” She blushed lightly. “You’re like really handsome, when I first saw you I thought you were some rich model kid or something. I expected you to be slightly arrogant or bratty. But you’re actually not.” She was the one to grab their cups when they were placed on the counter, and she thanked the girl who made them, wholeheartedly.
Outside he spoke again. “I used to be a lot more arrogant I think.” It wasn’t a confession he made often, and it made her look up with confusion, small hands cupped around the coffee.
She walked close to him again, and he followed her to the bagel place that she always talked about. He hadn’t been there before but she was really excited about it.
“What made you change?” she asked, taking a sip of her coffee and the blowing little clouds of steam into the cold air. “We go left here by the way.” She guided him around the shoulder by lightly pushing him with her body.
He sighed. “I used to go to the Dancing academy here. Bu-“
“What??! You went to Lee-Young’s?!” she exclaimed with big eyes.
“Oh…yeah.”
“I didn’t know you danced, let alone were that good.” She mumbled, pouting a little.
Jongin chuckled and bumped her lightly. “It’s not that nice of a place really. It’s all competition and no friendship, and I guess that’s why I was so arrogant. I felt like I was better than others because I got in there, but I wasn’t.”
“Did you quit?”
He shook his head, and brushed a stray strand of hair back up with the rest. And he felt the sudden nerves in his shaking digits, should he just tell her? “I was thrown off.”
“What?” she gasped, and she stopped him by grabbing his sleeve. “What happened?”
Jongin reverted his eyes to their shoes, her low heeled ankle boots, his dress shoes. “I got into a car accident.”
A soft gasp left her lips and she touched his arm. “You don’t have to tell me, it’s okay.”
He was silent, and then looked at her. She was looking up at him, round eyes full of concern. “I just couldn’t dance anymore after that.”
“I’m sorry.” She whispered. “Are you okay now?”
Jongin nodded. “I am, thank you.”
“Let’s go, I’m starving.” She linked her arm through his again as they walked on, but she didn’t put her hand into her pocket. He felt her small hand slide into the pocket of his own coat, and reach out for his hand in the small space, intertwining their fingers. Her hand was much much smaller than his, and he felt her manicured nails lightly scrape over the top of his hands. It was cold, but both of their hands quickly warmed in the confined space.
After walking a little more they turned a corner onto a little square with all these tiny shops. “It’s right there, Sweet Bagels.”
“Sweet Bagels? Really? How much of a sweet tooth do you really have?” he laughed. “I still hold up to my suspicion of you filling up that candy jar of yours regularly so that it seems like you don’t eat that many.”
She squinted her eyes at him. “I do not.”
“Miyong I see you munching on those things all day through at the office, and that thing never goes empty!” he was laughed and she pushed a finger into his chest.
“You’re just jealous that you’re not getting any!”
He rolled his eyes and she took their intertwined hands from his pocket to pull him inside the small shop. But unfortunately he missed the little step and he tumbled, twisting his ankle and finding support on a neighbouring chair. He gritted his teeth, groaning, as pain shot up his leg. “Fuck.”
Miyong was beside him in an instant, touching his back lightly. “Shit, are you okay?”
Jongin stood up straight and tried to stand up on his leg. Hot pain, like sparks, all the way from his ankle to his knee. “I will be I just need to sit. Is that okay?”
“Of course. Oh my god. Like don’t worry about it. We can sit inside and eat. We’ll take a cab back, it’s cold outside anyway. The park will be there next time.”
Next time. He thought and smiled lightly through the pain. “Thanks.” She helped him sit at a table as he limped slightly, but the pain ebbed away quickly as it always did after he twisted it. “I’ll be okay really, I’ll pay for the cab.”
“No, seriously I pulled you and you tripped. I feel bad, please let me just.”
Jongin shook his head, stretching his leg out under the table and bumping her foot accidentally. “You pay enough Miyong. You have your own place, you drive your own car, pay your own tuition. My family pays a lot of my expenses, so please.”
She studied him, and sighed. “Okay.”
He smiled and touched her hand on the table. “It’s okay. It’ll be gone in an hour or so, it happens a lot.”
“Is it the leg you hurt in the accident?”
He nodded. “It was trapped underneath the steering wheel, I broke it in 4 places. I was lucky they weren’t open breaks, or I’d have lost my leg.”
Sadness crossed her face and he squeezed her hand lightly. “Hey, don’t worry about me I’ll be fine.”
After she looked at him for a little longer, studying his features, she nodded and grabbed a menu to open it up in front of him. “Let’s eat.”
“Okay,” he chuckled. “What’s best here.”
She pointed out various things on the menu , and meanwhile Jongin was a little wary of them other people in the place. That had by now adverted their eyes from them.
“So my favourite is the apple cinnamon one, but the snickers, or cookies and cream are really nice too. Oh and the white chocolate raspberry.”
He cringed his nose at the last one. “So sweet, I can feel my teeth aching already.”
“Says the guy who drinks his coffee with two cubes of sugar and heaps of milk.” She mumbled under her breath and he smirked.
“What?”
“Nothing!”
Soon a waiter came to their table, he seemed young, maybe 16, but he was really nice and polite. “Can I take your order?”
Jongin motioned for her to order first.
“Ahh for me, a green tea, and a white chocolate raspberry bagel.” She smiled sweetly to the boy and he tapped everything in on a small tablet. Then he turned to Jongin.
“For me a green tea too, and a cinnamon apple bagel.” The boy nodded and left the table to pass through the order. He returned quite quickly with their drinks, placing them on the table.
“I’m surprised you drink green tea, no coffee?” he joked as he opened the teabag and placed it in his water. “I mean I suspected you were quite as much caffeine addicted as you were to sugar.”
She gasped and place a hand over her heart in fake hurt. “Jongin, why are you so judgemental. I cannot believe. Not everyone who loves coffee is addicted, and people can love both tea and coffee. I just think the taste is too strong to have it with food.”
“There you are right.”
They were both laughing, and talking about the little things. What tv shows they watch and bad sleeping habit. Miyong apparently sleeps with her socks on, and Jongin told her about how he sometimes wakes up hugging his pillow. And she’s jokingly replied that he needed a cuddle buddy to which he didn’t really know what to reply. So they’d left the topic and moved on to annoying people on the office, bad habits when writing.
“Hi, I have a raspberry white chocolate bagel?” the waiter said from beside the table.
“Oh that’s mine.” Miyong said and he placed her plate in front of her, Jongin’s in front of him.
“We should probably hurry though.” Miyong said looking at her phone. “We’ve been out for like half an hour already.”
Their breaks were about an hour, and they were checked. So they’d have to hurry a little indeed. “Let me call a cab, it’ll save us some time.” She nodded and he got out his phone to order a cap via the app they used. They being him and the guys, not his company. The bill would be issued to their place and Suho would just take it with the rest of the expenses. “They’ll be here in 20 minutes.”
“Quick then.”
“You’re going to get sugar rush from that thing if you eat it too quick.” Jongin said to her taking a first bite of his own bagel. The flavour was amazing, and the apples were slightly warm. “Oh, this is really good!”
She chuckled. “Yeah, I told you didn’t I!” With warm brown eyes focused on her own bagel, she cut off a little piece and offered it to him. “Try this one.”
He frowned a little but leant over the table to take the bite from her fork. It was a little odd, the sweetness of the raspberry and the heavy buttery taste of the white chocolate. The bread however, sort of made it perfect, dulled out the tastes and complimented them in a way he never thought he’d enjoy. “Hmm.” He said with his mouth full. “Okay, you win.”
She did a little victory wiggle in her chair and he laughed, so cute.
“I like your smile.” She said, wiping a little white chocolate of the corner of her mouth. “It’ s cute.”
He blushed and looked down. “Thank you.”
“Ah, don’t get shy on me now. It’s true.”
There was a bit of silence after that, as they ate their bagels. Until Jongin decided to speak up. “I think you’re really pretty.”
A frown appeared on her face but it soon turned into a smile. “Thank you. But don’t feel like you have to say that just because I gave you a compliment.”
He was shocked and it probably showed on his face. “No, I mean it, I really think you’re pretty.”
She chuckled. “I enjoy spending time with you. You’re really easy going, more so than I thought you were.”
“Likewise.” He said, but then he corrected himself. “Oh, no not that I didn’t think you were but…”
“Ah, I know. I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but I teach at this dancing school back at home.”
His eyes widened. “You dance?”
“Have I never mentioned?” she asked cocking her head to the side.
He shook his head. “No, I’m sure I’d have remembered. What style?”
“Oh, I don’t really dance myself anymore. But I used to dance ballet before I went to law school.” There was a hint of sadness in her voice, but Jongin knew how much time it took up to study law, and he knew that keeping up ballet on the side was a hard thing to do. “I was too short and chubby anyways to get into anywhere big.” She mumblingly added.
“I think you’re beautiful as you are. Dancing shouldn’t be limited to body sizes, it’s a stupid rule.” She smiled genuinely at him, but he also knew that he had it easy. Always having been lean and tall. He felt for her though, he once knew a guy that got kicked of the program because he grew too tall.
“But I didn’t want to let go of it completely, I’ve been dancing since I was a little girl. So I agreed to teach one group of little kids on wednesdays. They’re so cute, tiny little boys and girls.” There was a sparkle in here eyes and he looked at her in awe. He could hear her passion in the way she talked. “I don’t know if I’m being too forward, of if it makes you uncomfortable. But if you like it you could come along in two weeks, I’m sure they’ll love you.”
He was stilled for a moment and he looked at her. He hadn’t danced since the day of his accident, because he couldn’t really. He needed an insole to stop himself from limping due to the multiple breaks, and sometimes his leg hurt after the tiniest wrong movement. It would be a lie to say that he wasn’t a little scared to go, but he didn’t want to turn her down. “Yeah, of course. I’d love to come along.”
“It’s a date.” She smiled the brightest smile yet.
