Morning Ritual
He still wakes up sometimes, shaken from sleep in the wee hours of the morning. Cold sweat dripping from his bow, the ghosts of his past still haunting him. Sometimes I just lay there, waiting for the pain to pass and he comes back to bed, but tonight... something's different. Normally, I don't follow. I allow Kakashi his time with his demons. Now, padding through the house we share, I wish I would have taken the initiative sooner.
His chakra is sad, but at the same time, it's alert and defensive, like a snake coiled to strike at the first intrusion into it's personal space. I can't help but linger in the doorway; listening to the steady run of water, the mantra of 'It won't wash off' falling from his lips. Not saying a word, I let my defenses down, giving a gentle push of my own chakra and he stills, but doesn't stop me as I advance closer.
I stand beside him, flanking his right side before I look down. He's scrubbed his hands to the point they are starting to bleed. Kakashi keeps his demons secret, not wishing to burden me with his pain, but sometimes... I wish he would. "Kashi?," my voice is soft, filled with understanding and love.
"It won't wash off."
At first I don't understand. He's doing nothing more then starring at his under the water... no, he looking through them. My left arm snakes around his waist tightly. My right moves to cup the left side of his face. He's wearing his mask, the mask that he uses to hide his heart away from the world. His hitai-ate is still on the bedside table. That's when I can tell that the red eye is weeping. Hot tears flowing into his face mask and making it damp.
"Hes sad."
"Who is?"
"Obito."
Trembling hands move to turn off the water, but he doesn't look at me; not yet anyway. His breath shutters, knees buckle and we both tumble to the cold tile floor. My grip slips for a brief moments before a set of muscular arms wrap around my waist. His head is buried in my chest.
"It hurts so much."
Kakashi has always been so strong. Always following the Shinobi rules and has never shown weakness in front of others, but here... the morning shadows creeping into the kitchen, he breaks down in my arms. I just hold him; one armed wrapped tightly around his waist, the other trailing gently through his gravity defying silver hair. He seeks comfort in the arms of the ones he trusts; soft soothing words fail from my lips against his ear and he holds on, clinging until the pain passes and the demons fall silent again.
Waking up
The room is still when the figure bolts from the futon; heavy pants falling from his lips, an eye looking around the small bedroom. A mane of white hair sticking up in random places, some matted to his sweat covered forehead. His heart rate seemed to calm considerably when he saw his partner, still fast asleep and curled onto his side. The rain beating against the windows, wind howling around the building. The nightmare's had started just week's after the Shinobi war, when they had all come home to bury their dead. Konoha was still in the process of rebuilding. It had taken him another week to soundproof and secure his new surroundings. His attention was brought back to the now; hand rose and wiped down his face for a brief moment before a sigh escaped him. Body twisting feet hit the floor as he moved to the kitchen, he couldn't sleep now, even if he wanted too.
Post traumatic stress disorder wasn't uncommon for Shinobi in the field, the problem rose when learning how to deal with it; having been told all their lives to not show any signs of emotion or weakness, no matter the cost. Kakashi had lost so many comrades because of this, because they couldn't deal with it. Depression seemed to occupy whatever it was as well. It was a terrible mixture. A year after the great war and one of Konoha's elite ninja's was reduced to this; the mission's were pick and choose because he never really knew what would trigger him, a small tremor in his hand that seemed to appear at the worst of times; and nightmares, memories that would over take him and last for hours.
"Kashi," the voice of his partner broke the silence in the room. He was standing in front of the stove, kettle on to boil and not really remembering how he or it got there. A pair of arms wrapping around his waist from behind, the slightly shorter male rose to his tiptoes, kissing the back of his neck. Iruka didn't say another word, his hand rose and fingers ran through soft white hair. It was quite untamable but at the same time, it was something that the chunin loved about his lover. Kakashi responded to the touch, his head falling back and barely resting on Iruka's shoulder. He leaned his forehead against his bare cheek before kissing it.
The first time that Iruka had saw Kakashi without his mask had somewhat shocked him. It had taken over a year before Kakashi trusted him enough. The mask had always saved him countless times and acted more like a security blanket than anything else. Iruka understood. Iruka always understoods. Now, being around him without it or the headband was just like second nature. Kakashi had went to wearing an eye patch when they were home. To Ikura, he was the most handsome man that he'd ever saw.
The chunin moved to where he was standing in front of his partner, his own brown hair coming almost to his shoulders. His hands moved to cup the junin's face. "You're so beautiful, Kashi," a small smile on Iruka's face as he spoke. His fingers trailing over every little scar, including the one hidden slightly by the patch. In the two years they had been together, Iruka was helping him become more human again. "You are a wonderful person, Kashi. You're an amazing Hokage and someone the village looks up to." Kakashi didn't say a word, just rolled his eye. "I'm being serious," his voice remained soft as he spoke. "You've been through so much and you still prevail through the darkness."
Kakashi knew this, in the back of his mind; where Irkua's light was still able to read. He lowered his head, Irkua's hands resting against his neck. "Dad..." The teacher shock his head.
"You are not your Father. You're not going to make the same mistakes as he did. You paid for them and continue to do so, Kashi," there was a small smile that crossed his lips. "You can't keep beating yourself up, you know that right?" All the Shinobi did was nod, but his heart was breaking.
"I just want to make him proud."
"Believe me... he is."
