What if, at some point, they became penpals? Maybe Kaneki wrote a letter to his favorite author in a fit of rage against his aunt, and he thought she'd never even see it, but she ANSWERED HIM and she gets his anger against his family, his loneliness- in a way that Hide's never been able to. Or maybe after being tortured, when he's with Banjou and co., Kaneki gets a cryptic letter from some ghoul watching him and he answers the letter just to show he's not afraid of said ghoul. And the ghoul answers him back, not threateningly, but playfully, and both of them are fascinated and cannot stop themselves from replying to the next letter.

Through this way, they start growing closer, and Kaneki starts to wonder just who she is. Said ghoul drop hints, teases him with it, and Kaneki spends a long time wondering about the clues and their identity.

They're not friends, they're not enemies- they're just two lonely people who can't get enough of each other.

In my head, the climax comes in the Anteiku battle. By then Kaneki somehow found out who she is and they both knew if they were to fight they wouldn't hold back, and it's chaos. Kaneki feels betrayed bc she's fucking stealing the manager and he trusted someone who's sketchy and manipulative and he does love her and it tears him apart. Maybe instead of Kaneki fighting Amon he fought Eto and it ends terribly for them both.

So Kaneki ends up at Arima's feet like in the manga, and there's no more letters for Eto to read, and although she would def fight him again, she can't help but feel emptier than ever. She'd grown used to feeling lonely and then she'd forgotten it by talking to Kaneki. It's a wreck and she hates him but not really she loved him. She thinks for a while that he died, until he finds out about certain ghoul investigator with amnesia…
