Overall Assessment

Let’s not speak of this again || Awful || Bad || Okay || Entertaining || Good || Better than Expected || Really Good || Amazeballs || What is this vision of glory I’ve witnessed?!

Second of the season’s anime finished!  Being out-of-work on lockdown has its bonuses in that I’m actually not behind on the anime I’m watching this season, and am, in fact, so caught up that I can write more of these.  Crazy!  So, next up, is Darwin’s Game.

I have to preface this by saying that I love battle royale anime.  It’s definitely a guilty pleasure genre for me, so I did find this anime thoroughly entertaining and the okayest of okay. 

However, I also have to be realistic about it despite how much I enjoyed watching it.  Darwin’s Game was definitely a C-list anime.  The cgi animation was nice but inconsistent, and some episodes lagged while others seemed to move through the action at blinding speed.  We also have the whole “overpowered hero” thing going on, and that’s a trope that I’m not a huge fan of seeing.

Even so, as a battle royale anime, it was definitely very interesting.  The survival game aspect was very well done, especially the ring event arc.  Darwin’s Game being phone based was a bit reminiscent of King’s Game, Future Diary, or Eden of the East, but it being an app is interesting.  It mixes the high stakes game with the other world since the world of the game almost seems to exist to spite reality.

Another thing that was interesting about Darwin’s Game is Kaname.  While he really is your standard overpowered protagonist who has not clue what’s going on yet rallies together a bunch of overpowered people who do, he’s also a little something more.  Kaname is kind, but he’s also cruel.  At first, this is more psychologically cruel, and it’s easy to ignore due to his “no kill” policy, but as the series continues, it becomes more and more clear. 

This seemingly downward spiral of his character is subtle and intriguing, and it was definitely one of the main reasons (aside from the series’ nature as a battle royale) that I kept watching Darwin’s Game this season.

If you like battle royales or dark, gritty anime where the characters fight for their lives, then you’ll probably like this one.
