Coronado Heights, Kansas
2010
In the middle of nowhere, atop a small but prominent hill, this castle was built by the WPA in the depression era. Local legend says that this hill is where Coronado abandoned his search for the seven cities of gold and returned to Mexico. Overlooking the vast plains of middle America, this stone structure has inspired many colorful stories and events. One of my high school teachers swore he stumbled upon an occult-style wedding at the castle one evening. Maybe they were doing witchcraft or something occult on the grounds. I think people just get bored in Kansas and desperately need something creepy to do to feel alive.
