The Kansas City (Missouri) Monarchs were the most prominent baseball team to play in the Negro Leagues. Formed in 1920, they were also the longest-running team in the Leagues, disbanding in 1965. Many famous players were on the Monarchs roster, including the hall of fame pitcher Satchel Paige, the first African American coach in Major League Baseball“Buck” O’Neil and the man responsible for breaking the color barrier in major league baseball, Jackie Robinson. The Kansas City Monarchs won several championships, including the first Negro League World Series in 1924. #history #blackexcellence #blackhistory #kcmo #kansascitymonarchs (at Paseo YMCA) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf2FaaLu81w/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

When the former #KansasCityTBones renamed themselves after the legendary #NegroLeagues franchise, the #KansasCityMonarchs, I wanted in. So when the #Monarchs offered “memberships,” I immediately bought one. The membership arrived yesterday and includes a jersey, tickets to a game, admission to the awesome #NegroLeaguesBaseballMuseum, a commemorative #baseball and a jersey! Guess I’m going to have to get to #KansasCity sometime in the next few months... Good luck this season, @kc_monarchs! #SeeYouAtTheBallpark #ReignReborn @nlbmuseumkc @americanassociation ⚾️ 👑 (at Rockaway, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/COAsmmCB0nI/?igshid=17y7kfdlt3wza
Romare Bearden (September 2, 1911 – March 12, 1988) was an American artist, author, and songwriter. He worked with many types of media including cartoons, oils, and collages. Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, Bearden grew up in New York City and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from @nyuniversity in 1935. While at Boston University he played for the Boston Tigers, a semi-professional, all Black team based in the neighborhood of Roxbury. He tended to play with them during the BU baseball off-season and had opportunities to play both iconic #NegroLeague and white baseball teams. For example, he pitched against #SatchelPaige while playing for the Pittsburg Crawfords for a summer, and played exhibition games against teams such as the House of David and the #KansasCityMonarchs. #Philadelphia Athletics catcher, Mickey Cochraine, brought a number of teammates to play a game against BU, Bearden gave up only one hit -- impressing Athletics owner Connie Mack. Mack offered Bearden a place on the Athletics fifteen years before #JackieRobinson became the first Black player in major league baseball. Sources conflict about whether Mack thought Bearden was white or told Bearden he would have to pass for white. Despite the Athletics World Series in 1929 and 1930, and the #AmericanLeague pennant in 1931, Bearden decided he did not want to hide his identity and chose not to play for the #Athletics. • #RomareBearden #baseball #mlb @mlb #merica #murica #teamdl #blacklivesmatter #america #homerun #unitedstates #bhm #thisisamerica #morethanamonth #history #america #blackhistory #melanin #usa #africanamerican #artist #art #paint #blackhistorymonth #morethanamonth #patriot https://www.instagram.com/p/CLMO5eegUor/?igshid=x3xgoxv8d3q5
I’m tipping my cap in recognition of the 100th anniversary of #baseball’s #NegroLeagues. This is a #KansasCityMonarchs hat, worn by greats such as #JackieRobinson, #SatchelPaige, #CoolPapaBell and many more. As a child, when I first began to understand the importance of Jackie Robinson and the absurdity of the despicable “gentleman’s agreement” that actively kept players of color out of @mlb, I became enthralled with Negro League history. In fact, one of the great moments of my life happened exactly 25 years ago at a dinner celebrating the league’s 75th anniversary. At the time, I was working for a #NewJersey newspaper and had grand visions of doing a retrospective on the extraordinary 1946 #NewarkEagles club that won the Negro League championship. Their roster was stacked with eventual #HallofFamers such as #MonteIrvin, #LeonDay and #LarryDoby. In fact, they were owned by the only woman ever inducted into #Cooperstown (so far), #EffaManley. And one of my favorite Negro League players of all-time pitched for them, the outstanding #MaxManning whose nickname I adored, #DrCyclops. Well, I never actually wrote the article as I ended up getting hired by #Marvel soon thereafter, but I did do some interviews. Just sitting amongst those players, hearing their stories that night — what an experience. I’m posing with the legendary #TedDoubleDutyRadcliffe, so named because he would pitch one half of a doubleheader and catch the other. And as you can tell by his fingers, he caught a LOT of games. Other photos include books from my collection, Dr. Cyclops himself, Max Manning, a commemorative beer, a page signed by female player #ConnieMorgan and more. I can only hope that when I tip my cap to the 125th anniversary, we will all look back at 2020 as the recognized moment when this country finally came to its senses and truly realized #BlackLivesMatter.
