On This Day in Baseball History February 9, 1971: Negro League great and former MLB player Satchel Paige is nominated for Hall of Fame enshrinement via the Hall of Fame's Committee on Negro Baseball Leagues. Paige would become the first former Negro League player to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame via this committee. Had the pleasure of briefly meeting Don Newcombe (June 14, 1926 - February 19, 2019) at a Brooklyn Cyclones game a few number of years ago. This World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers is going to be historic. Two old school franchises who haven't met in the Fall Classic since 1916 when a 21-year old Babe Ruth pitched a complete game and won a 14-inning 2-1 duel against Brooklyn's Sherry Smith (who also pitched 14 innings.) What's historic for today's era of Baseball is that this is the first World Series where both participating teams are managed by minority Managers. Alex Cora of the Red Sox is from Puerto Rico where Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts is half Black and half Japanese. That in itself distinguishes this Fall classic from the first and only meeting in 1916. Throughout various social media outlets I've seen people post that Jackie Robinson was the first black player in MLB. That is not true. Many Baseball experts and historians debate the names of Moses "Fleetwood" Walker, William Edward White, Bud Fowler, Sol White and Frank Grant among a few as to who was the first black player in MLB. Jackie Robinson was first in that he was the first black player to break the established color line prohibiting black players from playing in any level of organized baseball affiliated with the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues. Its ironic that a true gentleman in the form of Jackie Robinson broke the so-called "Gentleman's Agreement" by taking the field at Ebbets Field on April 15, 1947.
