Phantom Busters in a nutshell
karou kanzaki had learned to keep his head down. people always said something about his eyes. too intense. too cold. sometimes he believed them. sometimes it hurt more than he let on.
he was nervous to meet you. not that he’d admit it. but when you walked up and smiled, he braced himself for the usual awkward glance or quiet judgment.
instead, you looked right into his eyes. you didn’t flinch. you didn’t look away. you tilted your head slightly and said, “woahh your eyes are beautiful.”
just like that.
karou felt his chest tighten. his lips parted like he might say something but nothing came out. he lowered his gaze, not to hide, just to breathe.
no one had ever said that before. not like they meant it. not like you did.

kaoru kanzaki sees you every day in the hallway. he doesn’t think you’ve ever noticed him but that doesn’t stop him from looking. you always seem lost in your own world flipping through notes or walking with your friends laughing at something he’ll never know about. it’s not like he’s obsessed or anything but sometimes he wonders what it would be like to talk to you even just once.
today he finds you sitting alone. you’re completely focused on a manga and for a second he just stares. then he realizes what you’re reading. his favorite manga.
his heart speeds up and before he can stop himself he’s looking at you way too obviously.
then you look up.
he freezes.
you smile at him.
his brain stops working entirely.
“you like this manga?” you ask tilting it slightly like an invitation.
he swallows. “yeah i do” and then it’s over for him because suddenly he’s talking and he can’t stop. the plot the foreshadowing the way the protagonist’s development is set up from the very beginning. he doesn’t even know if you care but he can’t help it because this is his favorite and it’s rare to find someone who might actually get it.
then he realizes how much he’s said and immediately regrets everything.
“sorry” he mumbles “i probably just talked your ear off”
but you just grin. “don’t be sorry” you say and then you start rambling too.
kaoru swears his heart almost gives out.
you get it. you actually get it.
he listens completely absorbed nodding along as you go on about your favorite scenes and characters.
he thinks this might be the best conversation he’s ever had.

The biggest thing I love about phantom busters is how the four of them never had friends before and this is their first time genuinely connecting with people. And it has SUCH a huge impact on each of their lives.
Mogari never had friends his age because he was practically isolated in the mountains. Eugene never had friends because his intellect made people perceive him differently. Kaoru never had friends because he was ostracized for seeing spirits. Kotaro never had friends because of his extreme social anxiety.
They all have different reasons for their initial loneliness but it’s so refreshing to see each of them overcome it and become best friends as time goes on!! They're such a well grounded friend group and it makes me want to sob

when you and kaoru were kids, you were basically the definition of “can’t stand each other but also inseparable.” you argued about the dumbest things, who got to pick the next anime to watch, which manga was better, who was better at video games (you always said it was you, he always disagreed). you bickered like it was a sport, but at the end of the day, you were always together.
he’d find some new manga and shove it in your hands like, “you have to read this,” and you’d roll your eyes but read it anyway. then you’d drag him to watch your favorite shows, even if he acted like he didn’t want to. but he always showed up. always sat next to you. always muttered little comments under his breath about the characters, even when he claimed he wasn’t interested.
as you both got older, the play fights became more teasing, the arguments less serious. he started noticing the way you laughed a little more. the way you always knew what to say when he was frustrated. the way he actually liked it when you dragged him along to do things, because it meant more time with you. but he refused to admit it.
his older sister, though? she knew. she always knew. she’d make little comments like, “oh, kaoru, why don’t you just hold their hand already?” or “you guys are basically dating, just make it official.” and he’d groan and tell her to shut up, but she’d just smirk.
one day, after another round of teasing from his sister, he just blurts it out. you’re sitting on the couch, flipping through a manga he recommended, and he just— says it.
“you know i like you, right?”
you blink at him. “huhh?”
“do i really have to say it again?” he huffs, looking anywhere but at you.
you stare for a second, then grin. “took you long enough.”
he groans, dropping his head back. “you’re the worst.”
but when you lean against him, flipping another page, he doesn’t move away. doesn’t complain. just stays there, like always.
except now, his face is bright red. like, absolutely burning. he grumbles something under his breath, trying to act all nonchalant, but you can feel the heat radiating off him.
you poke his cheek with a smirk. “you’re blushing.”
“shut up.”
