Regardless of how historically-informed performances dominate Baroque repertoire today, all can appreciate this vintage interpretation of Bach’s incredible Mass in B Minor. Karl Richter faced criticism for his style of performance, but his recordings are revered by many. Some incredible emotional works, once again proving the magnificence of this work by Bach.

The great Karl Richter plays Bach’s Fugue from the “Dorian” Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, BWV 538. After the vigorous Toccata, this Fugue sounds as like Cathedral music. Very spiritual and dignified.

Many Bach fans will immediately associate the “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” with an organ work that the composer may not have written. They should rather admire Bach’s Dorian Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, which I only recently listened to properly after watching a Russian re-enactment of Bach playing his own works. A marvellous work, great character and dissonant harmonies, played by the great Bach performer, Karl Richter. Listening right now, the pedal part is incredible.
