Today we celebrate the Venerable Cassiane (or Cassia or Kassiani) the Hymnographer. Saint Cassiane grew up in Constantinople and was selected as one of two potential brides for the emperor. Secretly hoping not to be chosen as she wished to live her life as a monastic, the emperor stated to her that the greatest evil came into the world from a woman (i.e. Eve) to which she responded, likewise the greatest Good also came from a woman (i.e. the Theotokos). Because the emperor did not wish his bride to be more intelligent than he, he chose the other suitor whom he married. Cassiane then became a nun and then abbess of the convent Ebdomon where she composed many hymns for Christmas and other feast days of the Church. She is most well known for her composition of the Troparion of Kassiani which is chanted on Holy Tuesday night. In this hymn, the Saint likens herself to the sinful woman who repented at Christ's feet. It is said that even if this hymn was the only one she had composed, this would be more than enough to number her among the greatest hymnographers of the Church. This next selection in our 8th Female Composers series is perhaps a bit controversial in terms of authenticity. This recording by VocaMe presents the works of Kassiani (roughly 810-865 AD), a Byzantine abbess, poet, and composer, whose work predates any other composer I’ve spotlighted in this series, and who was one of only two Byzantine women known to have written under their own names during the Middle Ages. The recording is controversial for what may be an overly westernized take on Byzantine music (the YouTube comments alone bear this out) that resembles an Italian madrigal aesthetic more than anything else. Still, it is the only recording to date of any significant body of Kassiani’s work, and notable on that point.
Still more to come today, and as the week continues! - Melinda Beasi

Kassia - Byzantine Hymns from the first female composer of the Medieval Occident
Kassia, Cassia or Kassiani (Greek: Κασσιανή, romanized: Kassianí, pronounced [kasia'ni]; c. 810 – before 865) was a Byzantine-Greek composer, hymnographer and poet. She holds a unique place in Byzantine music as the only known woman whose music appears in the Byzantine liturgy. Approximately fifty of her hymns are extant, most of which are stichera, though at least 26 have uncertain attribution. The authenticity issues are due to many hymns being anonymous, and others ascribed to different authors in different manuscripts. She was an abbess of a convent in the west of Constantinople. via Wikipedia
