Today we celebrate one of SOPHIA's patron saints, the Venerable Kassiani the Hymnographer. Saint Kassiani grew up in Constantinople and was selected as one of two potential brides for the emperor. Secretly hoping not to be chosen as she wished to live her life as a monastic, the emperor stated to her that the greatest evil came into the world from a woman (i.e. Eve) to which she responded, likewise the greatest Good also came from a woman (i.e. the Theotokos). Because the emperor did not wish his bride to be more intelligent than he, he chose the other suitor whom he married. Kassiani then became a nun and then abbess of the convent Ebdomon where she composed many hymns for Christmas and other feast days of the Church. She is most well known for her composition of the Troparion of Kassiani which is chanted on Holy Tuesday night. In this hymn, the Saint likens herself to the sinful woman who repented at Christ's feet. It is said that even if this hymn was the only one she had composed, this would be more than enough to number her among the greatest hymnographers of the Church. Saint Kassiani is considered one of our patron saints as she received one of the highest education as a woman in her day and she used her intellect to glorify God. May she intercede for us all + #saint #kassiani #kassiane #cassiani #cassiane #cassia #kassia #hymnographer #hymn #church #monastery #nun #emperor #byzantine #byzantium #constantinople #suitor #empress #monastic #abbess #convent #hymns #troparion #holytuesday #holy #patron #patronsaint #venerable #orthodox #sophia

If we chase after human praise and acceptance, using the white-lie to keep the peace in our relationships, we will lose the Prince of Peace, Who is the only One who can solve relationship issues and keep peace between us messy human beings. What follows a white-lie? More lies, condemnation, guilt, anxiety, and pain. (Isaiah 50) Our best choice is followship of God, leaning into God and letting Him maintain what He has created, trusting Him with our relationships.

Think about everything Jesus has taught you from His Word, just as He taught on Holy Tuesday those many, many years ago, the precious principles of life and right living, of truth and faith. Are we willing to lose our lives, to be His canvas?
For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever’s loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. (Mark 8:35)

Today, the word still refers to Jesus' torments and narrates the crucifixion in the Gospels. 💖 #HolyTuesday 📖 #HolyWeek2022 🙏 #PerfectFormula 🧪 https://www.instagram.com/p/CcPoX7wP-PG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Days 6-7: Today we begin work on the fig tree – and if you're looking for a good fig recipe to accompany this beautiful block, I've got you covered here (stuff your figs with goat cheese, pop them in the oven until the cheese bubbles, pour on a balsamic reduction, and enjoy)! Today's block is our first dive into applique. So, just like we had a few days ago, you'll see there are two videos available for you today. The first is specific to today's block and the quilt along, while the second dives into how to applique. We'll cover it briefly in the main QAL video, but - again - since we're all at different stages on our quilting journey, an extra deep dive may help. It uses our “Love Letters” (inspired by St. Paul) block, but the technique is the same regardless of what block you're working on. Leave me a comment with *your* favorite fig recipe, and share a photo of your fig tree block using the hashtags #faithandfabric #scripturequilts #figtree #holytuesday #applique (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbVHFABLSBr/?utm_medium=tumblr
