Exhausted, Natasha took her keys out her pocket and unlocked the door to her flat. She had spent the day training new recruits, tedious work that’s had her yearning for her bed, her pyjamas and a warm cup of tea.
She entered the flat, a now familiar sight after moving into the comfy space with Maria a few months ago, however, this time the window was open and a few nick nacks that decorated various surfaces were knocked over. Immedietly alert, Natasha silently withdrew her gun and started to scale the flat on her tiptoes.
First, she scanned the living room. Finding it clear, she turned the corner into the kitchen, the gun raised, safety off, ready to shoot the intruder if they attacked. Also empty, she moved to the hallway that led to her bedroom. The door was ajar and Natasha could hear the faint huff of someone breathing. Ready for an attack, she pushed the door open, her eyes running a lap around the room until they landed on the neatly made bed. There in the middle sat a small ball of fur, easily mistakable for a wool jumper.
Relaxing at the sight, Natasha made to step closer but, immediately, the fur’s head jumped up, pale green eyes like summer grass landed on her as if Natasha was the intruder. The cat was entirely black, a deep midnight black that could camouflage itself in a pool of ink, the only colour the untrusting green of it’s wide eyes that sparkled with flecks of gold. Re-holstering her side arm and raising her hands to show she’s harmless, Natasha approached the bed with slow, silent steps that showed her every move.
When she reached the bed, a small smile graced her lips that the cat had not ran away. Upon a closer look, Natasha noticed the cat was not wearing a collar so must be a stray that had wandered in. It was seemingly harmless so, Natasha put her hand out for it to smell. It’s button nose twitching as it checked Natasha was safe, relenting with a small, scratchy lick to her palm. Ecstatic at the opportunity to pet the tiny animal, she ran her hand through the fur along it’s back, surprisingly silky-soft for a stray but still encountering a few knots in the hair.
With the newfound trust, Natasha took it upon herself to sit on the bed next to the cat, her hand messing up the fur on its head. Before long, the cat stood up and circled Natasha once, it’s searching eyes tracing the curls of her fiery red hair and the signature black leather jacket that covered her uniform then rubbing its body along her waist, its back arching and long tail pointing to the celling in the picture of grace, as it made its way into Natasha’s lap where the feline curled into a ball and purred until Natasha stroked its back again.
“Oh well aren’t you adorable,” she cooed in that voice reserved for babies and animals, “we’re gonna have to keep you aren’t we? Yes, we can’t let you go back to the streets now can we?”
Her hands kept trailing through soft fur, gently tugging knots apart whenever she found one and occasionally cooing to the small animal that seemed to have been lulled to sleep in her lap.
Eventually, Natasha heard the rustling of the front door being opened and someone entering the flat, tensing until she heard the calming lull of Maria’s tired voice after a long day of paperwork and scaring agents into actually doing their jobs properly, announcing she’s home. Maria made her way to their bedroom knowing that’s where Natasha’s answering call came from.
She came to stand in the doorway, smiling at the sight of her favourite person after a long day until her eyes caught the black ball on her lap that Natasha kept petting.
“Hey, how was your day?” Natasha asked, the picture of innocence.
“The usual, you know, nothing out of the ordinary,” Maria shrugged pausing for a second then tilting her head with a confused quirk of her eyebrow, “until I came home.”
The question was clear, yet Natasha continued acting dumb, “And what was that?”
“Well, you see, I came home and instead of finding my gorgeous girlfriend, I find her in bed… with another girl” Maria talked slowly, pausing every few words as if she was bewildered and upset by the sight in front of her but, the small quirk of her lips gave her away.
Rolling her eyes, amused at her girlfriends antics she introduced Maria, “Maria this is cat, cat this is Maria your other mother,” looking up from the cat to Maria’s ice blue eyes “I’m yet to give her a name.”
“Naming her suggests we’re keeping her?” The stern look that usually appears as AD Hill makes an appearance.
Of course, it holds nothing over Natasha as she grins wider, “Well of course we’re keeping her, shes so soft and cute and cuddly,” her excitement evident.
“No, we aren’t.”
Natasha pouts knowing she can crack her, it may just take a few rounds. “Come stroke her, that’ll change your mind, she’s gorgeous.”
Reluctantly she crosses the room and sits on the bed reaching for the cat. Suddenly, it turns in Natasha’s lap, surprising both spies as a paw stretches and sharp claws scratch at Maria’s forearm.
“Ow! Shit!” Maria examens her arm, 4 red lines extends along her arm, the skin sore but not broken. “We are not keeping this cat. She is the devil!”
“Oh Liho, that’s a great name! Mia we have to keep her and we’re calling her Liho,” Natasha’s excitement is quickly hidden behind another pout at Maria's reluctant look. “Please Masha, we can't kick her back to the streets, she'll freeze half to death!”
Maria sighs, a long, deep, slightly annoyed sigh and relents, her voice still stern “fine, but she is your cat, I am not feeding her or cleaning her and she is not going on our bed under any circumstances, ok?”
Natasha squealed, the words following it pitched so high Maria winced slightly and Liho jumped off her lap and ran into the living room but the meaning was clear when she launched forwards and hugged Maria as tight as she could. Maria hugged her back hiding a reluctant smile where she buried her face in Natasha's neck, just happy that she was happy.
Natasha calmed a little, the squeals turning to repeated ‘thank you's until she pulled back and crashed her lips to Maria’s in a surprisingly soft kiss.
“Thank you Masha,” she whispered, resting their forheads together, a soft smile evident in her voice, “we're mothers.”
Maria rolled her eyes affectionately with a small chuckle, “I am not that demon child's mother.”
“We'll see about that,” Natasha laughed.
In the end, Maria grew to love Liho, often feeding and grooming her, spending hours playing with the beloved pet and often falling asleep on the sofa with a ball of soft raven black fur curled on her chest which immediately became Natasha’s phone background.
