My Top 3 Favourite Irish Horror Movies
A bonafide Galwegian's entirely subjective opinion
A couple from London move into a house in the middle of dense Irish woodland with their newborn baby. The locals warn them away but they do not heed this warning. Come nightfall, they learn exactly why they should have listened... and why the bars on the nursery window are made of iron
Also known as "Brits learn the hard way why Irish people don't fuck about when it comes to fairies." Ooh they might be all cute and butterflyie where you're from but we've got fucking hell-spawn living in our woods and we know better than to piss them off
Changelings and body horror and a forest come alive. This movie is everything The Watchers (2024) wishes it could have been and more. Suck it, Shyamalan
When a small, seaside island off the coast of Ireland is attacked by an alien species, a ragtag group of coppers, a scientist, a bar keep and a drunk have to keep the locals safe by getting them absolutely fucking sloshed
A piss-your-pants funny horror comedy that has me in stitches on every watch. Is the CGI incredible? Nah. But does that add to its charm? Oh, you'd bet your arse it does
You Are Not My Mother (2021)
Char's mother has mental health problems. She spends whole days in bed. She struggles to drive her teen daughter to school most mornings. She can be quiet and distant and odd. But she is her mother and she loves her deeply. Whoever is living in the room just down the hall... is not Char's mother. Even though it is wearing her skin
This movie scared the tits off me. A genuinely terrifying masterpiece from writer-director Kate Dolan and one of the first films in a long time to have me jumping out of my seat in a cinema. My poor girlfriend damn near saw God with the fright. An easy recommendation. It's so fucking good. Just believe me. I'm doing me best for spoilers here! Go watch it. You want to, I swear
