On the official blog was a mention that Columbina had a diffucult childhood and was ill for long time and malnourished. I feel like malnourished part might be caused by her parents neglecting her or just giving more resources to stronger siblings. It's common for animals to abandon or kill weak ones and humans aren't better lol, I read a lot of stories how people in villages killed or starved newborns bcs another one was too much. (honestly I wonder if she has any insecurities about being weak. did she feel like burden to her family and later to troupe members so she tried to do everything to be somewhat useful?)

Kinda same story with Harlequin - I read theory that he might be abandoned by his parents, and I feel like he was born in family that had a lot of children so he constantly was fighting for resources and parent's attention until they just dropped him (and probably some of his siblings too) somewhere because they had too much mouths to feed.

thinkin (once again) abt sokka's relationship with his wolf tail, and what it comes to mean to him

wolf tails are for warriors, and growing out the shaved sides must have significant meaning like knowing and honoring what it means to be a water tribe warrior

sokka doesn't start growing out his hair until after aang dies

he's long believed he was a warrior, but book 3 is when he really starts to understand when he really takes on the mantle of being the protector and the strategist. he internalizes all the realities of what it means to fight in a war, and he grows out his hair the entire time

and then the war is over

and THEN

the sides of his head are shaved again! and we're seeing him paint in the ending scene, instead of doing anything with his weaponry! he could've kept growing out his hair, but i think there's an intimately deliberate reason behind shaving it again:

sokka is a warrior. he knows it, we know it, everyone knows it - but here, in this moment, he finally gets to be a kid, and he wants the hair to match.

(and as much as we hate his lok style, him still having his shaved sides shows how deeply he still holds to this idea, as a way of honoring what was taken from him and everything that he had gone through, when he was just supposed to be a kid)
