Summer and vacation are synonymous, but did your vacation rejuvenate you? Probably not, if your vacation included lots of family, friends and the logistics of feeding and fun for a crowd.

Dear Reader,

I write from St. Johnsbury, Vermont, a stop along our family's college tour of New England colleges.  Each school offers exciting possibilities, but perhaps the best part of this trip (besides the lobster rolls and ice cream cones) is the journey from one possibility to the next with my son, Nolan, and husband, Dave. Together, we are learning that there are many right answers when it comes to Nolan's future.  Next Monday, Nancy Lamberton will be the guest host of Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, featuring Dr. David Goldberg, whose inspiring mission is to make engineering and careers in math and science accessible and appealing to young people.  It's too late for me, but, as the mother of teenagers considering their future options, I am thrilled that David has made this commitment to young people and to engineering, science and math professions. I can't wait to hear what he has to say, and I hope you'll join Nancy and David for this live conversation.

Presence is a hot topic in leadership and leadership coaching these days. Discoveries in neuroscience and the growing body of leadership research point to the power of awareness to dramatically improve one's effectiveness in any situation.  And, frankly, the feedback we get and give to each other consistently points out that "how you be" is just as important as what you do. We are coming to understand that great leadership is about far more than getting things done. In my work, I often find myself asking clients -- what's it like to be with you? At times, it's a startling question, an opening into an exploration of leadership presence.  Always, it's a gateway to the rich self-discovery that comes from practicing mindful awareness.  The concept of presence is a bit of a catch all.  Presence can mean many things -- from how you convey to others to how awake you are to your own experience of the moment in which you are living right now. What does it mean to be truly present?  How do you do it? I believe this topic will only grow in importance in years to come, and I'm grateful to next week's radio show guest, Doug Silsbee, for the outstanding work he is doing to illuminate and teach the importance of presence to a busy and distracted world. Known as a wise sage in the field of coaching, Doug's perspective will help you understand how bringing attention to presence can create powerful shifts in your life and effectiveness.
