Jean darkens her gaze, her shy and girlish mirth giving way to sisterly frustration.
“I know you complained about him to no end when we were kids, and I know I still don’t understand it.” She mutters. “I’d quite enjoy having one party when I come to visit that doesn’t end in petty name-calling between you and Bill Hearst. For Pete’s sake, of all the people I’d expect you to get along with-!”
“Our circumstances are similar,” Darcy says sternly. “We are not.”

Darcy Reid and Bill Hearst clash terribly. One is stiff and nervous, the other a picture of confidence; one stumbles through life while the other swans effortlessly. One takes himself apart piece by piece, prying out his broken parts so that he may adjust his blueprints and rebuild himself as something better - and the other was born as perfect as could be. They're a porcelain vase and a rust-stained bayonet, a Monet watercolour and a Carvaggio oil; it's only a matter of time before those differences become unbearable.
for the newsies fic exchange, i got @katherinebly! their request was:
"I would really really like some Cannon Era BillDarcy! maybe some period-typical angst, maybe some sort of Homosexual Affair type thing? They are absolutely my OTP and I'd love some period stuff of them instead of modern au if possible.
Also if the author knows about Jean Reid (actual historical person) and doesn't mind writing her then I'd be obsessed, she's one of my favourite cameo characters when it comes to Darcy fic."
i've never written for this pairing before, nor have i researched jean reid, so this was a wonderful learning experience - i actually really want to dig more into my characterizations for bill and darcy now! i hope i delivered what you were hoping for :)
