Review: While there are certainly some darker themes underlying the story and what brought them together this was much more about the love story. I wouldn't call this a dark romance at all. Brynn has her own traumatic backstory, which I won't say anything about, but I loved her strength, determination, and faith in Cass. For so much of this, I just really wanted to hug Cass, who yes, has the same genetic material as his father, but also because he was never allowed to be a normal kid, teenager, and man. He has become crippled in fear, doubt, anxiety, and paranoia. He's been deprived of touch and convinced himself he is unworthy of love. He and his mother were Paul Isaac Porter's final victims. And with Brynn's arrival he's coming back to life. At times I was aggravated with how he was reared by his mother because self-fulfilling prophecy is also a thing. Cass has an incredible heart, but the thoughts of contamination, poison, and evil have been drummed into his head.

This was a very unique, thought-provoking and tender story with very good development and sufficient plot twist, that derailed it slightly for me but up until that point I did not want to put it down. It didn't ruin the story for me but I wish there had been a different message. This was my first read of Katy Regnery but I will definitely be reading more from her.
