Her pet Muffen was turning out to be a very useful pet to have against the waves of drones. It was able to brush off most of the attacks and was large enough to take down a few drones at once, by pouncing on them and tearing them to shreds.

It was both a blessing and a curse, though, because Muffen had gotten used to–and began to enjoy–the act of pouncing and the following shredding of enemies. He was a bit too quick to act, and when he saw Princess Bubblegum with her abnormally large pet, he assumed she was being attacked by it. He started towards the two of them, gathering speed quickly, ready to pounce–

“Stop! Come here!” Muffet shouted the commands at her pet, and it scrambled to a halt. It walked slowly backwards to Muffet’s side, looking a bit confused.

“Thank you~,” she cooed, gently patting her pet’s side as she lead him closer to his previous targets.

“Bubblegum~? I hope I’m right in assuming they–” Muffet gestured at Bubblegum’s giant cat. “–belong to you, and I didn’t call off my friend here for no reason? Ahuhuhu~.”

“What the bleeding hell is going on? Are you lumpin’ kidding me with all this?”

She’s confused, angry, and upset. Not a good combination for Marceline.

Still, amidst the chaos, she manages to send out two separate texts, both bearing the same request:

❝if it isn’t bonnie!❞ A wide smile pull her closed lips into a smile, one hand reaching to push her glasses from her eyes. Jubilee doesn’t rush when she walks towards the princess, but rather she SAUNTERS. 

❝i have GOTTA ask, who should i vote for in this flower thing? i already know you’re the princess i choose.❞

They’d both probably been drinking, and they’d seen each other from across the room, and because Marceline was stupid she zeroed in on the princess, taking her outside and out of the way from prying eyes.

She knew she was going to regret this. She knew this was asking for trouble. But still, she backed PB into the wall of the building, gently cupped her cheeks, and tilted her head slightly before bringing their lips together.

It’s soft, sweet, familiar. Marceline could feel the warmth radiating from Bonnibel, something she hadn’t felt for a long time.

Her eyes close, and her hands move. Marceline places one hand on the back of Bonnibel’s head, while the other she drags slowly down, brushing slowly over the princess’ cheek, neck, shoulder, arm, fingers... and then Marceline wraps her arm around her, pulling her closer as she tilts her head, deepening the kiss.

It’s so easy. It’s too easy to slip back into this, and the alcohol in her system was definitely not helping anything, to say the least.

Finally, Marceline seems to wake up. She backs out of the kiss, releasing hold of Bonnibel like she had burned her, and takes a step backward, and then another.

“.... I’m sorry,” Marceline whispers, eyes wide with fear, with regret, and then she takes off, flying into the night.

Honestly, this was probably going nowhere. So much for teamwork...not that this was something Flame Princess thought her candied counterpart really capable of. There was some kind of science talk that she only half-understood, so it wasn’t really her fault if her attention wandered elsewhere. FP focuses instead on the more relateable features in Bubblegum: her expressions, how they matched up with what she was saying, her body language. And suddenly she’s doing that thing again--that...that thing where she tries to be chummy, but in the grossest way. The Fire Kingdom advisers called it ‘political correctness’ and agreed that it was a skill FP probably didn’t need to use or understand; diplomacy was a relatively new concept.

“Ugh, could you can it with the fake formality junk? Just get to the point!” 

She almost liked it better when PB acted more callously--at least then FP knew where they stood. With no kingdoms to provide face for here, she begins to wonder if it’s something Bubblegum can’t actually turn off. It’s still way annoying, but that’s not the point. Flame Princess is determined to keep her bearing here, and rights herself to focus again. It’s then that she picks up on a subtle sway in Bubblegum’s tone, how her glaze looks just a little less perfect than usual and her words a little less precise. Was it like that the whole time?

“Hey um...you don’t look so good.” a pause--did she hear that? And what was with that glazed look in her-- 

“Princess Bubblegum--hey! HEY! Are you listening??”

The movie had just begun when he feels her weight shift next to him. Maybe she’s getting comfortable? Finn certainly knows how sometimes you gotta readjust for optimal comfort, but when her mug tumbled to the floor and her head lopped onto his shoulder, Finn couldn’t help the smile that slowly invaded his lips. She had spent too much time in her lab, and he knew she needed the rest, so as gently as he could, Finn carried her to her bed, grateful she didn’t wake up once. 

In messy penmanship, he left her a note, an I’m glad you’re getting some sleep, let’s do lunch sometime note. And with a kiss to her cheek and a light hug to her sleeping form, Finn retreated from the room, stopping at the door only to briefly admire her cuteness before finally leaving.

He’s staring at her door. He’d been staring at it for the past eleven minutes or so, occasionally raising his fist to knock, then lowering it when he lost his nerve. Last he remembered before waking up in his bed, before he was whisked off to Flame Princess’ side, was her candy sweet voice. 

We should be together.

He took a deep breath, held it and let it out slowly. He was gonna do it. He was definitely going to do it. He made her a cereal breakfast that was quickly getting soggy and he brought her a tiny flower that was quickly wilting without a proper water vase on her bedside table. He needed to knock. Now.

Riiiight now...

He sighed and weakly knocked. If she didn’t answer, she must still be asleep right? Then he would have to ask her about it later. Right? So he knocked as lightly as he possibly could.
