It’s kind of ironic, at this point, how automatic his response is to make room for Kayla. Despite knowing Brandon for years now, he’s only barely scratched the surface of even beginning to know Kayla, to reach that elusive level of friendship that they’re tentatively stumbling towards. It helps that she’s one of the only people to really, truly, understand the agony he’s in, as a result of him being half in love with her brother. 

“I’m okay.” He tells her in a subdued voice, not even able to convince himself anymore. It just - It hurts, knowing he’ll never be able to get what he wants the most. He doesn’t protest as she climbs into the bed and under the blankets with him, even knowing she’s only doing it out of pity at the most, but he still appreciates it when she pretends not to see him wipe under his eyes as discreetly as he can, cursing at himself for getting so emotional over something he’s already accepted.
