Neil hits fresh air and the consequences of his actions kick him in the chest. What starts as a mild burn intensifies, wooden rib bones heating in the stove of his torso. Neil staggers out of the tunnel of trees and clutches at his heart, so sure it’s going to explode. For a brief moment he makes peace with death; the heat has built to a rolling blaze.

But he realizes he can’t be dying. If death were the punishment for abandoning the bracket, someone would have been more transparent about that, right? Alex’s words stick in his head: “People will hate you for this.” And if he died, he wouldn’t give a shit what anybody thought, so it can’t be that dire.

Neil stumbles toward the main building as his vision blurs and goes black. The pain climaxes. Neil lands hard on his knees and is confronted with a sensation like twin crossed piano wires being ripped out of his chest. He screams, the sound echoing through Reignier Circle, but as quickly as it had come on, the pain is gone.

When his vision rushes back in and he looks down, there’s a ragged X carved into his shirt, dripping with blood.

The double glass doors open in the distance. Neil curses under his breath. It’s Caitlin.

He scrambles to his feet and turns around to head back to his dorm, but she calls his name. With a lame attempt to cover the wound—which still throbs, a dull, pulsing burn—Neil waves to her and stays put. Caitlin jogs over; her face transitions from curiosity to horror as she approaches.

“What the hell is going on?”

Neil musters the most dumb expression he can. “Oh, you know. Just…chilling,” he says.

🤐 a secret

“Can I ask you a secret question?” ⬛⬛⬛ said, so quietly that only Rian could hear. When Rian nodded, she said, “Did you see 🖾🖾🖾?”

Rian’s pulse jumped. How had she known?

His reaction seemed enough to ⬛⬛⬛. She produced a slip of paper from her pocket and pressed it into Rian’s hand, under the gurney, hidden from the view of the black bulb set into the ceiling. She gave his hand a squeeze.

“Don’t look at it where they can see,” she whispered.

I think it would be to not quit what I’m doing. At some point, I stopped writing as much because I never finished a project, or I jumped between interests and was scolded, and because writing couldn’t bring me a career I scolded myself for enjoying it and other creative outlets I had.

Abandoning projects isn’t bad. No, I don’t mean come back later I mean completely drop. It’s still worth writing until that point because I improved so much because I did this! I also developed a writing voice and found out what I enjoyed and didn’t enjoy writing.

saccharine: excessively sweet or sentimental

Emerald had never, EVER been in a relationship with a person as kind and lovely as Quinn. The way Quinn would smile at her; the feeling of Quinn’s hand in her own; the joy, peace, and grace about her that made Emerald always feel like she was where she was meant to be; and Quinn’s unbelievable sweetness made Emerald’s heart bubble and overflow with an affection she had never felt before. There was even a tangible sweetness to every kiss Quinn gave her — a sweetness Emerald could both taste and feel. The first time Quinn had kissed her on the cheek, leaving a lipstick mark on Emerald’s face, she almost thought, “I never want to wash it off.” Quinn was making her cheesy!

Happy STS! What’s a common writing tip that you mostly ignore? - @aziz-writes

Thanks for the ask, hun!

I tend to ignore anything that dictates the use of commas. I will pause when I want to, and I will continue as I please, so don’t try to contain my dramatics. I also “don’t start a sentence with ‘and’ or ‘but’!”

Oof. This is hard because I mostly don’t follow any writing advice? What I usually end up doing is just going with the flow until I get stuck on something, and then I refer to the future writing reference tag I have and go digging.

I guess one of them is the excessive use of adverbs? I can always go back and edit later but for early draft writing purposes, adverbs are Great.
