Woman with a Head of Roses

     "It's weird."

     "Oh, c'mon, Renée, humor me. What do you see?"

     "The weirdest three-legged-chair I've seen in my life and an egg. And hands, so many hands. Too many hands..."

     Barbara laughed as she sat on the floor next to her girlfriend. Legs crossed in a lotus position, baby blues looked up at the painting on the wall, Woman with a Head of Roses; a copy of course not the real deal.

     "Keep trying. How does it make you feel?"

     "I thought this was art, not a therapy session."

     "That's the beauty of it, it can be both."

     "It makes me angry."

     "Angry why?" the blonde laughed as she turned her head to face Renée.

     "Because I don't get it? Because it doesn't make sense? Because I'm gonna say something stupid and completely wrong?"

     "Nay, it's art. Don't think about it. You... feel it. No answer's wrong. Just tell me something about it."

     "Okay," the detective squinted and took a deep breath before she spoke again. "Burton. Tim Burton... like the Corpse's Bride. Like... the Monster of Frankenstein. No, no. Oh, I got it! This woman on the corner, she's like a fashion designer and she's trying to put together a new line of clothes because her business is falling apart. She needs something new, different, groundbreaking. She becomes obsessed and has a psychotic breakdown and starts killing people and using their parts for her designs and that one in the back is her nek--"

     "Shh," Barbara placed her index over Renée's lips and shook her head. The detective smiled and smacked her lips against the fingertip. The blonde chuckled and moved her hand to caress the other's cheek. "Really, Renée? I mean, you were right about the fashion thing, but there's this sexual aspect about it. Most of Dalí's paintings have that element, eggs, flowers, phallic symbols..."

     "You wanted me to say something and you also said there were no wrong answers." 

     "That's it. No more Dalí for you. We're gonna try Kahlo next time or Matisse... Botero"

     "Or we could try making our own art with sexual symbols and all that... I mean, if you want."

The Hardest of Choices by donutsweeper | 1000 words. I love this one so much. Such a good Renee. (Author also has another smuttier Keatoya that is worth a read!)

Hands Shake by scribblemyname | 400 words. Pre-canon Barbara character piece ending with how she meets Jim. I want approximately another zillion words of this.

Every Fairtyale Needs a Good Old-Fashioned Villain by magnetgirl | 3500 words. Killer origin story. It’s so good, I can’t even say. SO GOOD. On top of ships I never knew I wanted, it examines race and class in Gotham and just A+++

Gullock? Jarvey? I still don’t know. Feel the Pickle.

In a Dark Alley by callay | 850 words. Explicit. Dirty alleyway blowjobs of hotness, and Harvey pulling Jim away from a fight. AKA everything I love.

Last Night on Earth by days4daisy | 1500 words. Missing scene for Penguin’s Umbrella. Mild infidelity. Misogynistic line. (Oops, editing because I had meant to say more about this one. I really like the feel, and the author's Harvey is great. Normally infidelity squicks me, but this was handled in a way that didn't feel like it was completely shoehorning Barbara aside. My caveat is that despite the author's tags, Jim's perspective of the Duchess made me super bummed out. So heads up for pov commentary on a woc/possible sex worker in one line.)

Gordonworth

Don’t Shoot the Messenger by freshbrainss | 2500 words. This could be alternately summarized as: Everything Pondy loves put together in a single fic. Also the cause of me shouting HOT TOP ALFRED at various people.

make your darkness mine by storiesfortravellers | 900 words. This has a non-con warning, but it’s drunken!consensual rough sex with hints of rape fantasy. Jim gets turned on being with someone who can subdue him. AKA: Everything else Pondy loves in a single fic.

All Part of the Service by devera | 8000 words. Jim stops at the Manor to check on Selina, Alfred takes one look at him and brings him inside to patch him up and take care of him in all the ways. Super hot AND all the h/c and batdads feels.

Fair Play by manic_intent | 31000 words. Mostly slow burn casefic, with smut in an epilogue. Jim ending up living at Wayne Manor is maybe my favorite trope in this fandom and this one does it in spades. Written early on in the series, so not a lot of spoilers and some fun touches of greater batcanon for those familiar with it. (Author also wrote the werewolf!Alfred fic that I will never recover from, but that’s more ymmv.)

Multiple Pairings

it’s all the rage back home by mr_charles | 1650 words. Jim/Alfred, Jim/Harvey, Jim/Oswald. Remember that time I freaked out because the fandom got it’s first hooker fic and it was rentboy!Jim? This is that fic. Shockingly, my favorite of the three is the Jim/Oswald.

Alfred & Bruce and Alfred & Thomas

When to Fight by ajisai | 750 words. Batdad feels. Alfred doing his best raising young master Bruce.

Five Times Alfred Wanted to Protect Thomas Wayne by storiesfortravellers | 2450 words. Pre-OT3 that I desperately want more of. Perfect snarky Alfred voice (shouty!military!Alfred at that prrrr) and an excellent Thomas.

Gobblepot

A Lesson to Learn by bluesoaring | 3050 words. Non-con. Pilot alternate canon. Jim interrupts Fish’s boys in the alley and it doesn’t go well for him. Blue writes the BEST Oswald.

Five Times Oswald Cobblepot Didn't Respect Boundaries by bluesoaring | 5700 words. Stalking. Oswald interacting with various characters (Barbara, Alfred&Bruce, Harvey, and Jim) all centered around his obsession with Jim. Super awesome hints of Oswald manipulating events around existing canon.

In Her Name by pennedgalaxy | 1800 words. Explicit. Non-con. top!Oswald kidnaps Jim. pov is a little mushy in a couple places, but sticks mostly with Oswald and the prose reflects that.

Heartlines by glowstick_of_destiny | 1200 words. This one is part of a series, but this rec is only for the first.  I couldn’t quite make it through the second because of the way the dialogue is structured: it’s not always given its own paragraph when switching speakers. The first story is brief enough and stylistic enough that the formatting quirk is easy to ignore. The way Jim and Oswald end up together totally works for me in this and I’m a hard sell when this ship isn’t dubcon/noncon.

Simmer Down and Pucker Up by auchic | 2350 words. Explicit. Author warns for dub-con, but Jim is way drunk and doesn’t ever really consent. That said, SO MY THING, and also an excellent shifty Oswald.
