#LettersForJerika ! I've finished putting together the zine to send to #JerikaBolen . Now I just need to make the cover and I'll send it express. On top is the original cut and pasted together zine, and on bottom is the scanned final copy. This is volume 1 of the #RadicalVisibilityZine entitled Dear Jerika Bolen , volume 2 will be the #Kickstarter reward (link in bio). This is the start in an online and special edition print magazine geared towards Queercrip teens. It would be inaccurate to say Jim Kirk has always been the type to throw himself into whatever he finds bodily. He had been far more reserved as a young boy, trying to please, but he'd quickly discovered that careful did not win you much of anything. No, he hadn't expected to find the person that people considered to be a 'soulmate' that would activate his color sight. Humanity had spread far, too far for such things to be any more likely than winning the intergalactic lottery. What's more, that particular evolutionary trait had given way too much 'proof' to people against legalizing human-alien relationships for him to be particularly fond of it. And some part of him, in all honesty, expected this genetic mate to be dead before Jim ever found them- story of his life, as it were.

He definitely didn't expect to find them on a shuttle to Starfleet he'd almost missed, the only other person who seemed like they didn't belong there. Jim Kirk didn't believe in fate, but for a split second it was a damn close thing. The man in question- Leonard McCoy, divorce- managed to disappear in the scant minutes Jim slipped into the bathroom to clean his shoes. That was fine by Jim, he liked a challenge. Since he had never officially registered for the Academy, they didn't have a room set up for him, either. He was offered the last bunk in a six-person room. But James Tiberius Kirk was a gambler, and despite all sorts of advancements, the color spectrum was still a huge deal culturally. So he cheated. A little.

His request to be roomed with Dr Leonard McCoy was met with raised eyebrows, but when he explained the situation they became more... thoughtful frowning. "I can prove it," he'd told them, excited. "Cadet uniforms are red! I know because my blood was the same color when I saw myself in the mirror." And when they asked about Bones's eyes he didn't know, doesn't know because they weren't one thing. "They're- The outside is like his hair but lighter so... brown I guess. Brown? But the inside was different. I don't know, I haven't..." He looked across the room, frowning. His gaze crosses to the window to the right of the housing officer and he practically leaps from excitement, mouth splitting into a wide grin. It split his lip back open, too, but he was not bothered right now, because he figured out the second color. "Green! Green like grass! ...grass is green, right?"

"The word for that color is hazel," the housing officer muttered, flushing slowly, embarrassed. Jim straightened, victory curving his mouth into a smirk. He'd pegged the officer as a romantic and he'd been damned right to do it.

Still, for all the work he'd done, he'd expected a little more than 'oh, it's you.' Jim wasn't bothered, though. "Oh, it's me," he replied with a grin. There was only one bed in the room- apparently preexisting doctorates afforded you singles- but there was a couch that Jim could sleep on till Bones- Leonard, whatever- got comfortable with him. And if that never happened, it was okay, he'd get rehoused next semester. Sure couldn't hurt to try, though!

Jim dropped his two bags- one his own, the other what the Academy had provided- at the door and strode up directly to the doctor. See, like we said before- Jim Kirk used to be cautious, when he was still a little boy, but he'd long thrown that away. Tangling his fingers in the man's dark, thick hair, he tilted Leonard's head back and leaned down to kiss the man. Oh, he had some restraint. Just lips shifting against the man's mouth, slow and unintrusive.

[Jim falls silent. His eyes grow wide. No, Bones didn't mean that. It was a joke. A joke that has made Jim's heart skip a beat and restart at time-and-a-half, swelling, that has made blush rush to his cheeks but still. He squeezes the bear Bones gave him the first time they met in person (well, second, but by memory the first), presses it against his mouth to hide his expression in part, stop himself from saying something embarrassing.]
