Hi! You mentioned in your about that you're getting a PhD in being a tumblrina? That sounds really cool and I'd love to talk about it!! Academia wasn't for me, but something about the academic approach to things suits my mindset well, and it's not something I've been able to use lately.

I am indeed! I’ll be defending my tumblrina dissertation in May or June (then it’ll be dr. Tumblrina to you) and always happy to talk about what I’m working on!

The short version is that I’m interested in the epistemic networks that have formed among trans(/)Mad users on here, tracing back to the rise of self-diagnostic/ gender self-determination efforts in the early 2010s (tucutes and the like) and both the preceding / concurrent efforts elsewhere online and the continued impact of this knowledge work today and beyond.

Basically what I am reading for are the speculative & care-full practices not exclusive to the internet but perhaps more local here: ways we can materialize our identities outside “real worlds” hostile to our existence as trans Mad ppl, ways we traverse gender and sanity and even species / singlet subjectivity, and ways the collective pedagogical practices of digital networks help to maintain and reproduce these spaces we rely on for survival and intimacy and personal edification.

To think about this, I’ve developed the concept of transMadness, which sits alongside portmanteaus like queercrip ( @rebirthgarments ) and neuroqueer to describe not only the intersection of discrete experiences but in this case lets us think about how trans”ness” Maddens gender + Madness facilitates and gives us language for reality-crossing very amenable to trans study.

I have a bunch of publications and you can find the peer reviewed ones here. They’re not all about tumblr but many are.

Lastly, I want to mention a few colleagues I cite in the dissertation that may be reading this! @sadhoc @materialisnt @campgender @metapianycist @yesthattoo @floral-ashes.

URGENT! Support 21-year old Seraj from Gaza

i was recently reached out to by Seraj, a 21 year old university student from Gaza. Seraj is supporting his immediate family of 9 people, as well as extended family members. he's also been directing mutual aid projects for people in his community, providing money and food to other displaced Palestinians.

as we all know, the situation in Gaza is extremely dire, and the prices of essential life items such as food, water, medicine, electricity and internet are outrageously high, not to mention the constant risk of iof violence. your donations will be going to necesseties for his family and for mutual aid projects.

Seraj's family could be displaced for the 5th time at any moment. It is crucial that he reaches his short term goal of 67,000 as soon as possible, and he's so close!!!

I really don't have many words to explain the tragic situation we are living here in Gah zah, in Khan|Younis specifically right now!

Sanad, Malak, and their daughter Hind were displaced from the rubble of their home last week. They were forced to make the harsh journey under evacuation orders and fire. This is Hind's second displacement in only 2 months of life. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. Sanad and Malak’s village is enduring a Jenna side right now. We need to show up as their long-distance village. Hind needs formula and water, and Sanad and Malak also have survival needs.

I’m bringing a few updates on Seraj and his family!

First of all, we are raising Seraj’s campaign goal to $70,000 to reflect the continued need their family is in.

Life since fleeing Rah Fah has not been any easier or more affordable. Seraj’s family spends about $500 per day on bare necessities, such as gas, food, water, tent repair, and medicine. The commission rate on cash withdrawals is still around 16%, and food and water are crushingly expensive.

Additionally, Seraj is still full of hope that the border will reopen and he will be able to travel to Egypt. Whenever this is possible, he wants to set his family up for success and provision in his absence. In the weeks before his travel date arrived, Seraj had raised money for this exact goal. However, the family was forced to use these savings for their displacement from Rah Fah.

One of Seraj’s daily struggles is the internet. Because so many people fled Rah Fah to the middle areas of the Strip, Seraj has to walk hours to find enough bandwidth to communicate with us or post on Instagram. Frequently, he can’t even use his translation app until very early in the morning when most others are trying to sleep.

Despite all of these struggles, Seraj is determinedly eager to help others–always. He surprised us last week by deciding to do a 4th mutual aid project for his displaced neighbors! Seraj distributed 100 shekels to 18 people, 50 shekels to 35 people, and 20 shekels to 20 people. Again, he walked for hours to make this possible! Pal eh Stein ians teach life, and Seraj is such a good example of that poem by Rafeef Ziadah. His constant generosity and selflessness has been a teacher to all of us on his team. What an honor it is to know him!

Here's our plan:

1.⁠ ⁠Boost his family's finances for continued survival costs. Withdrawing cash, accessing water, and purchasing food are all outrageously expensive in Khan Yunis. 2.⁠ ⁠Save up for Seraj's evacuation to Egypt. As soon as the Rah Fah border reopens, Seraj is ready to leave Gah Zah. This is terribly bittersweet for him, but he is hopeful that the rumors of the crossing reopening soon will come true. Note--Seraj had previously raised money for this goal, but the border crossing and Rah Fah assault forced him to use those funds for their fourth forced displacement.

3.⁠ ⁠An even bigger mutual aid distribution project! Seraj will be working on the details while we progress towards the goal of $20,000.
