My feelings have been so over the place these last couple of days. One moment I’m sitting in silence, then it turns to complete anger, then I start to feel this lump in my throat. When I saw the video of #AltonSterling being killed by police I didn’t know what to think. I couldn’t wrap my head around why or how this could happen yet again, and not 24 hours later there was another black man, #PhilandoCastile, who was killed as well! My mother wasn’t killed by police brutality but I know exactly how it feels to lose a parent. When Mr.Sterling’s son screamed out in an agonizing cry for his father I immediately felt where he was coming from. For I am too familiar on how it feels to yearn for your parents and there’s no way possible that you can feel them again. He’s a 15 year old young man who needs his father. When you have a close relationship like that with your parent there’s nothing that can replace that hurt. To be killed over something to senseless...because the police are “afraid”. Mr.Castile was killed in front of his family. His daughter may or may not remember what happened, but she’s another black teen without a father. Young black men and women need their mother and fathers contrary to what many may believe. I’ve always worried about my brother being killed since my mom passed because I was really paranoid that another person would leave me. As the years go by I’m even more paranoid because that could’ve easily been him. Black men and women we are so valuable. I’ve come to the conclusion that we have to be a threat because there’s this hate towards us that I will never be able to explain. I feel as if our race is always the one “adjusting” to everything. No matter the circumstance we’re able to hold our heads up high and make it through the storm. We’re descendants of our ancestors that pushed through probably the worst times of their lives because that’s how strong they were. Black men please know that you’re valuable, beautiful, and strong. Know that your lives matter just as much as anybody else’s. Keep your shoulders back and head held high…because we are the foundation of EVERYTHING.
