The Origin of Wesen: A Retelling
Since the beginning of the world, Wesen have lived alongside Kehrseite. The two races have had a complicated relationship, alternating between Wesen attacking and persecuting Kehrseite, to Kehrseite treating Wesen with equal cruelty. But despite all of this, there was a time when Wesen and Kehrseite were one and the same.
It is said that at the dawn of time, after the Lord Almighty had cast Adam and Eve out of Paradise, He came to visit them in their new home, in the land that the two had settled in. When He arrived, Adam greeted Him, and Eve brought out her children to be presented to God. God looked at all the children Eve had--- all of them beautiful--- and finally asked “Do you have any more children?”
“None,” Eve said. But that was far from the truth. Actually, Eve had many more; but when they were born, something was wrong with them. They were more like animals--- foxes, wolves, bears, mice, and rats, among others--- and even though they walked and talked like the other children, Eve was embarrassed by them. No matter how hard she tried, Eve couldn’t make them look like the rest. And so before God came to visit, Eve, as a last resort, hid the other children behind the house, hoping the Almighty would not notice.
But God sees all, and knew what Eve had done. Before He left at the end of the day, He turned to the two and said “What you have hidden from God, God will also hide from the world.” The two did not understand what He meant, but when Eve came to fetch the other children, she found to her surprise that they now looked like her beautiful children. Eve rejoiced, not realizing that her children now shared her early shame. Additionally, they were still like animals; as they discovered later, they could still turn from human to animal at different times, like taking off and putting on a coat. But so ashamed were they by how their mother had treated them, that they told their descendants to never show their true nature to the other children of Adam and Eve. And so the beautiful children became the Kehrseite, and the ugly children became the Wesen. And from then on, the two have always been at odds.

One of the things I enjoy about Grimm is how the Wesen are presented as almost exactly like normal humans, right down to living in homes, having jobs, and starting families, not to mention having their own apparent body of folk and fairy tales that they tell children, just like people in real life.
It’s established that one of the common fairy tales Wesen tell their children are about disobedient Wesen being decapitated by Grimms, as mentioned in episodes like “Pilot,” “The Hour of Death,” and “Lost Boys.” This explains why many of them freak out when they see that Nick is both a cop and a Grimm; it’s like a human finding out that the bogeyman is real, and has come to arrest you for committing a crime.
While Grimm tries to keep its worldbuilding closer to real life, with semi-scientific explanations for things such as Grimms being able to see Wesen and how Wesen can change from human to beast, I wondered whether or not Wesen had their own folktales explaining how they came into existence, one rooted in myth. It was then that I remembered that Europe (and other countries, such as the Philippines) have folktales explaining the origins of supernatural creatures like faeries and demons. I then began to wonder how a Wesen version of that story would go, and wrote the above retelling. (As a side note, viewers of the Disney/Pixar film Monsters, Inc. would probably recognize a similar story being used as the backstory for the division between mankind and monsterkind.)
It should be noted that this is not meant to be viewed as the definitive origin of Wesen in Grimm. This is simply my idea of a story that European/Christianized Wesen would pass down to their children, as a way of explaining their origins and justifying their existence in relation to Christianity. No doubt Non-European/Non-Christian Wesen would have their own story.
Also, as a final note, the above image is taken from here.

I'm a little curious if other fans of Grimm (NBC) have any characters they've made based on the show, Grimm, Wesen or Kehrseite/other human.
