The parallel between Hades and Persephone's love and Mélinda and Keith's love come from the fact that Keith's mother, Grace Hunter, is overprotective and refuse to see her children dating anyone, (Remember Riley and Thomas issues), so Keith and Mélinda have to keep their love a secret.
Also Mélinda is associated with the underground, shadows and a whole "hidden side of the world".
