Just before Christmas I showed Francis the series of character designs I had done in different classic animation styles, and he encouraged me to next try emulating the brilliant Tom & Jerry animations, and that if I could emulate that I could probably emulate any of the classic animated styles. This is a pencil test by Ken Muse, and he is said to be guy that animated the 'Definitive Tom'.

At the moment I'm trying to sketch out some key poses of Tom's, and it is so difficult! Particularly the faces of Tom and Jerry themselves; they're so full of different shapes attached here and there, but because the cartoon doesn't allow for the same extreme, slightly grotesque squash and stretch that a cartoon like Ren & Stimpy would have, it is very difficult to get the characters looking like themselves. I will keep working and hopefully post a few sketches up here if I ever even slightly get the hang of this animation style. My hat goes off to Ken Muse and the other animators that worked on Tom & Jerry cartoons.
