“What is it?” Kara asked, looking down at the small, firm box Kendra had handed her. It was gift-wrapped in bright yellow SpongeBob-decorated paper, and topped with a bubblegum pink bow, which Kara presumed was a nod to Patrick. She smiled. Of all the things Clark had shown her upon her arrival to earth, SpongeBob SquarePants had been her favorite.
“Don’t tell me you don’t know how a gift works, Blondie,” Kendra said with a smirk. “I’ll explain it real slow so you get it- you start by taking off the packaging, and then-”
“I know what a gift is,” Kara interrupted, frowning at Kendra’s attempt at a joke. “I’m asking what’s inside.”
“See, if you knew what a gift was, you’d know you have to open it to find out.”
“You’re so annoying sometimes.”
“You love it.” Kendra’s voice got softer on the word love, causing Kara to look up at her. They had been careful about that word, but lately it was getting harder to avoid. It would bubble up in the least likely of sentences, and both girls would look at each other wondering if the other meant it the way that they hoped.
“You wish,” Kara murmured.
“Yeah,” Kendra said with a low chuckle, “you know something, maybe I do.” Kara stared at her in wonder, both girls smiling shyly at each other for a beat before Kendra said, “are you going to open it or…?”
Kara activated her x-ray vision, laughing when the contents of the box remained unknowable to her. “Did you line this with lead?”
“How else does one give a gift to a Wonder-kid?” Kendra replied with a playful roll of her eyes.
“I’m not a Wonder, I’m a Super,” Kara said, shaking her head at Kendra. “You’d think my girlfriend would be able to remember that.”
“She can remember,” Kendra said, smiling, “but it’s a lot more fun for her when she pretends not to know the difference because her girlfriend is just so gosh darn cute when she’s irritated.”
“Alright,” Kara groaned, “enough of the third person, you’ve been hanging out too much with Guy.”
“Ha! He wishes. Anyway, open it!” Kendra waved her hands forward enthusiastically, urging Kara to get on with it already.
Kara delicately removed the bow, then carefully wedged her finger through the taped corners of the packaging, and soon the box was bared. It was plain white, with an image of a device on it. “You didn’t.”
“You can’t keep living in the early 21st century, Blondie,” Kendra laughed, “it’s time to get with the times.”
“You know that this will only work on Earth though, right?” Kara asked, opening the box and holding up the iPhone Kendra had given her. “This won’t work when I fly off planet.”
“I know,” Kendra murmured, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear bashfully as she looked at Kara and added, “but maybe it’ll be one more reason to stay.”
