TIME AFTER TIME Dreams do have an awfully sadistic taste for pain. When I was a child, my masters' old nursemaid used to warn me off acting mischievously by telling me tales about the Sandy-man, who would have turned my dreams into nightmares as easily as a sand castle at the mercy of wind would crumble to dust. He would have made me atone for my naughtiness in such a mean way - taking advantage of my vulnerability. I wonder if the idiotic protagonist of those silly cautionary tales for children still pays me attention. I suppose he decided to beset me for life - or I'd rather say, what's left of my life. I would not blame him, though. My hands are dirty, covered with blood. And yet I do not regret it. All things considered, I guess I deserve my nightmares. I cannot help thinking that I would act the same way if I could get back to those days. What was an eye compared to your smile, after all? What was an eye compared to your hand, which secretly used to reach out for mine? Your clear laughter was fresh air for my lungs. Do you see how gladly I would have given the Abyss my other eye, my whole body, my ripped heart? Your life was just so invaluable. I would have paid any price to have you back.
I've been dreaming of you every night since the day I reemerged from the Abyss. Your eyes like a glass of brandy during a sunny summer day. The scent of wildness and freshly-cut grass of your hair. More than fifteen years have passed since the last time I kissed you goodbye, but somehow the taste of your lips lingers in my mind. Still you haunt me, Kenneth.
Night after night. ***DISCLAIMER: I do not own Xerxes Break. Since Jun Mochizuki didn't reveal Break's proper past, what you'll read here is what my sister and I imagined for him. Thus, as Lewis Carroll's White Knight would say, Kenneth "is my own invention", and so are all the original characters we might put into Break's past X3 Enjoy!
