Even though there were still tears on his face, he crawled back over to the wall of iron bars that lay between him and Merrin. He wished he could lean against them to be in contact with the other boy, though he knew the iron would hurt him like it didn’t hurt Merrin, for reasons that still escaped his imagination.

After a while, he found the strength to speak. “When you’re alone, even the smallest things seem like miracles.”

“Have you really always been on your own? You had no one?”

“No,” he answered. “No one at all. It was always just me.”

There was a pause, then, “you have me.”

Kieran laughed softly despite himself. “Not for long, unfortunately.” His mother was going to make sure of that. She was going to make sure that the moment Kieran found someone to love, they were taken away.

“You have me right now,” Merrin said, and a hand reached between the bars comfort him. Desperate not to feel so lost and alone, he reached out and took it with his own.

“Can you tell me a story?” he asked Merrin.

“Of course.”

And while Merrin spoke, Kieran could imagine that he was the prince in the tale, that Merrin was the hero, and that when it was all over, there was going to be a happy ending.

The two are pretty good friends, Kerrin is a bit pushy and annoying but Fowler knows he does everything with good intentions in mind.

Maps can be confusing - but don’t worry, Kerrin is probably just enjoying the climb - even if their goal isn’t reached anytime soon. ;)

Kieran realised he was still holding Merrin’s hand and let go. “My- the queen, she… she likes to make a spectacle sometimes,” he answered. “A show to remind everyone.”

“Of what?”

“That she could burn them all if she wanted, but she won’t, if they help her set the fires.”
