Man o man I love this needle. I finally started the first of many kettle stitched books. I used to use straight needles and it was so tedious. This is a curved upholstery needle but there are needles purposed for bookbinding. I had an old planner and a scrap of wrapping paper with a pattern of stags. I decided to turn theseinto a sketchnook. The pages are made from paper from Flying Tiger. The back cover is covered with an old envelope. The spine is covered with a piecebof cloth, painted with acrylic paint. Artist book prototype: Tatami Maker

prototype #1: experimenting with long cross stitches and a black cover

The contrast between the flashy cover and the traditional subject seem to be too much of a clash.

Inside, 4 signatures of 2 folded sheets of papers (7″ high x 14″ wide). Used a kettle stitch binding techniques to unite them together. The signatures are then sewed with the cover (long cross stitches).

The book lays flat, the paper is flexible and it is easy to turn the pages.

Some pictures are spread across 2 different signatures, creating a somewhat more dynamic layout between separate photos on pages and a landscape view,

For those of you who were curious, I will type out the #reallybasic steps in the process. All up it took me about 5ish hours to complete the 2 of them. But I know a couple of kiddies who will be happy when they get home from their fathers on Thursday. For those of you who really #CBF #hitmeup I'll happily custom make one for you to fit your needs. This is the entire process from start to finish. 1. #Measure and fold and cut (if necessary) each individual sheet of paper. In this case for the 2 books I used #100gsm A4 #paper. 40 sheets to be exact. 20 for each book. I folded each sheet in half and cut and then folded the half sheets in half once more to make the desired size. 2. I stacked each folded sheet into signatures of 4. 10 signatures in each book. 3. I measured an even number of spaces on the top #signature and used my awl to peirce each hole where I would end up sewing them together. 4. Its sewing time. I used @sealemon #kettlestitch #binding #technique with #blue #cotton. Mostly because it's the only colour I have. I would have preferred white. 5. I measured 2 sheets of #card for the cover the same size as my #textblock. (All signatures sewn together is the text block) I covered the card with paper I have here by using just a generic school glue stick. 6. I used #PVA glue to glue the spine to the spine of the cover. Tada.. more or less. #sagestudios

Yesterday I attended a kettle stitch book binding workshop by @littlesyam .
