IISM was honoured to welcome Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award Recipient, Commodore Pushpendra Garg.

Besides his 35 years of service in the Indian Navy, he was also the CEO of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme at the Sports Authority of India (SAI). During his Masterclass sessions at the IISM campus, he gave his eloquent insights about the India's evolving outlook towards sports as a tool for 'nation-building'.

Enlightening our students with the recently introduced National Sports Policy and the Sports Governance Bill, he explained how implementing those into action is going to transform the country's sporting landscape on all levels.

Drawing on his experiences as a sportsperson — a former World Champion in Sailing — and working with SAI and other sports federations, he displayed his astute understanding about the nitty-gritties of Indian athletes in multiple sports, their strengths and challenges. 💪

Naturally, all our students and members of faculty were astounded to learn some new facts and anecdotes about the Indian sports industry.

In what is seen as massive embarrassment for the Modi government World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat has returned her Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to the government protesting against the election of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh-loyalist Sanjay Singh as the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president, the wrestler wrote in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Vinesh’s decision comes days after Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Deafylmpics champion Virender Singh Yadav returned their Padma Shri awards.

“I am returning my Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award,” Vinesh announced through a letter that she posted in her X (formerly Twitter) account.

Jai Hind! pic.twitter.com/zbStlMNHdq — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 6, 2021 पीएम मोदी ने ट्वीट में लिखा, 'देश को गर्वित कर देने वाले पलों के बीच अनेक देशवासियों का ये आग्रह भी सामने आया है कि खेल रत्न पुरस्कार का नाम मेजर ध्यानचंद जी को समर्पित किया जाए। लोगों की भावनाओं को देखते हुए, इसका नाम अब मेजर ध्यानचंद खेल रत्न पुरस्कार किया जा रहा है।' प्रधानमंत्री मोदी ने कहा कि, टोक्यो ओलंपिक में भारतीय पुरुष और महिला हॉकी टीमों के प्रदर्शन ने पूरे देश को रोमांचित किया है। उन्होंने कहा कि अब हॉकी में लोगों की दिलचस्पी फिर से बढ़ी है जो आने वाले समय के लिए सकारात्मक संकेत है। खेल रत्न सम्मान के तहत 25 लाख रुपये नकद पुरस्कार दिया जाता है। ध्यानचंद का हॉकी में अविश्वसनीय योगदान हॉकी के 'जादूगर' कहे जाने वाले मेजर ध्यानचंद का हॉकी में अविश्वसनीय योगदान रहा है। उन्होंने अपने आखिरी ओलंपिक (बर्लिन 1936) में कुल 13 गोल दागे थे। इस तरह एम्स्टर्डम, लॉस एंजेलिस और बर्लिन ओलंपिक को मिलाकर ध्यानचंद ने कुल 39 गोल किए, जिससे उनके बेहतरीन प्रदर्शन का पता चलता है। उनके जन्मदिन (29 अगस्त) को भारत के राष्ट्रीय खेल दिवस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इसी दिन हर साल खेल में उत्कृष्ट प्रदर्शन के लिए सर्वोच्च खेल सम्मान खेल रत्न के अलावा अर्जुन और द्रोणाचार्य पुरस्कार दिए जाते हैं। इस अवॉर्ड की शुरुआत 1991-92 में की गई थी। ध्यानचंद की उपलब्धियों का सफर भारतीय खेल इतिहास को गौरवान्वित करता है। लगातार तीन ओलंपिक (1928 एम्सटर्डम, 1932 लॉस एंजेलिस और 1936 बर्लिन) में भारत को हॉकी का स्वर्ण पदक दिलाने वाले ध्यानचंद के जीवट का हर कोई कायल रहा। Read the full article
