The Enigmatic Khirki Masjid: Unveiling Centuries of History and Unity The Khirki Masjid stands as a testament to the diverse history and com
Mughal Empire founded in 1526 AD ruled India for almost 200 years and during their rule Muslim rulers made various cultural and architectural developments. Muslim architectures have a uniform structure and design that mainly include large bulbous domes, large gateways, and massive halls. Taj Mahal, Jama Masjid, and Red Fort are few examples of famous monumental architectures built during the Mughal rule in India. One not so popular monument named “Khirki Masjid” is located in South Delhi and now surrounded by residential buildings.
I recently got chance to visit this mosque during a visit to my friend Sandip Kaur who is a professional photographer in Delhi and thanks to her for clicking these pictures that I could post here. The building is in ramshackle condition, some of the domes have collapsed, and many bats are the residents of this building now that makes it frightening to go further in some parts of the building. When we were exploring around the building and taking pictures one guard followed us to keep an eye on our activities. And the reasons might be the scrabbled words on the domes, and empty beer bottles laying at the roof.
In the last couple of years when I started reading more about Indian history, I feel more and more desire to visit such monuments. Because of the time constraint I could not visit the popular Jama Masjid and Red Fort in Delhi this time, but I hope to visit more such places around India soon.

Peace talks with self. This place is 70 m from my house. Was shut all of last year for some dispute. Happened to go see it only today. The structure is borrowed from the mosque in Cordoba, Spain. What a beauty, but missed in most historical narratives about Delhi. Constructed in the 14th century by Khan-i-Jahan of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, when Khirki ceased being a politically important space. Who knows why construct this here? What did this space mean to historical and modern actors? There are stories about community disputes over this space, sometimes as shelter to homeless, sometimes as a space to contesting political groups, sometimes between communal communities, sometimes as a space meant for mass mobilisation. What is the historicity of such claims? Do we inquire enough? Isn't history in everything we are? Isn't it a wonderful wonderful thing to know, understand, challenge and recount? :) #history #khirkidiaries #khirkimasjid #dillidarshan #delhichronicles #historyofdelhi #travelgram #historygram
