Vyasa narrating the Mahabharata to Ganesha (Angkor Wat, Cambodia).

Veda Vyasa, also known as Krishna Dvaipāyana, went on a quest to collect the scattered and lost hymns of the Vedas.  He organized them into four books (the Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda), and also created a story that illustrated the Vedic truths.

Vyasa couldn't write, so on Brahma's suggestion, he asked Ganesha, the elephant-headed god also known as the “remover of obstacles”, to write it down for him.  Ganesha agreed, but only if Vyasa could narrate the whole thing without any pauses, so that it would be free of human prejudice.  It took three years to complete the task.  But most of the story's 60 chapters were lost to time, and only part of it was preserved, thanks to two of his students and his son, the parrot-headed Shuka.

This story, with many other additions along the way, is today known as the Mahabharata.
