Guys guys calm down, the ghost is friendly! He wants to help!
The radio coming on all of a sudden was the last straw for Logan. He had been hoping that the ghost that apparently was haunting the van was not completely aware, and that, if they were careful, they could maybe remain calm and get away unscathed without it even realizing. However the radio coming on like that implied it was very much fully aware of them. Logan slammed on the breaks. There hadn’t been many cars around since he’d started driving, so there wasn’t anything to impede them as Logan pulled over onto the side of the country road.
Roman finally stopped his screaming that could literally wake the dead, and they both bailed out of the car. Logan immediately reached for the back door to get Patton out, but the locks clicked before he could. He spat a word that Patton definitely shouldn’t hear.
“Patton can you unlock the door?” Logan asked, trying to force it open still despite knowing that was useless. Patton looked over at him and then at the bear that was still floating in front of him, seeming confused. “Patton try to open the door. Patton!” He didn’t move to do so and Logan groaned, his brain running through what little he knew about ghosts. Most of it was not particularly good. Haunted objects were usually caused by shadow ghosts, like the taxi you were never supposed to take near White Lily Lake because your body would show up mutilated a state over
“You got a haunted car?!” Roman screamed, rounding the front. He joined Logan in trying to pull on the door, but the door still didn’t budge.
“How was I supposed it was haunted?!”
“Were there any dead bodies in it?!”
“I’m not an idiot Roman!”
Roman scoffed. “Oh really, then why do we have a haunted car?!!”
Patton was making a wide eyed calm down gesture, but how was Logan supposed to calm down when Patton was stuck in a haunted van? The car’s windshield wipers started to move up and down, clearly agitated.
That set Roman off even more. “What if we break the window with a rock?” He asked. Logan’s eyes widened when the car honked loudly in response.
“He didn’t mean it! He’s not going to do that!” Logan yelled. Ghosts tended to be very territorial over their tethers. He turned to hiss at Roman, “Shut up.”
“Oh, and what’s your big plan, Brainiac?”
He didn’t know. He didn’t know. He had no idea what to do. Ghosts weren’t exactly known to be reasonable in most cases, and they hated when their space was invaded. Logan was honestly shocked they weren’t dead yet.
Logan turned to the car. “Look, we didn’t know the car was yours,” he said, placatingly. “If you just let Patton go, we’ll leave. We’ll go.” The car horn blared again, making Logan flinch. “Look,” he said, “Please, we...”
“Uh, Logan,” Roman grabbed his arm, his voice just as terrified as it had been before, but drained of anger suddenly. Logan looked over at him to see him staring across the road. Three humanoid shapes were climbing out of the ditch on the other side of the road. One... looked like it had a broken neck and another had its arm torn clean off and dripping dark red, almost black blood, but none of them seemed bothered by this. They looked.... dead. They were dead. But they were still moving towards them.
Logan froze for a moment, stuck between two dead things. He heard the lock click behind him and both doors opened suddenly. Roman and he met eyes and turned to hop into the van, Logan back in the drivers seat and Roman landing on top of Patton. The door slammed closed behind them for better or for worse.
The car started without Logan touching anything and the car lurched forward away from the creatures.
