Well, GRRM is no Tolkien. That much I can say (you wanna write a garden? Hire gardeners [editors] with sharp shears to get rid of weeds! Gawds, I swear all the books I’ve read so far are at least 200 pages too long!).

Also, Ned is a dumdum. I still cannot find out why not making Jon a ward wasn’t a better solution (especially since Ned had months on the road back North to figure it out), but the whole A Game of Thrones conflict relies on people being dumdums. Like, when Ned goes to warn Cersei, it should have gone like this:

Ned: *I know you fuck your brother and that belligerent Joffrey, fat Tommen and golden Myrcella are not the children of fat, belligerent King Robert and golden Cersei-argument!*

Cersei: “Oh dear. That sounds awful. No wonder you cheated on Catelyn!”

Ned: “What?”

Cersei: “I mean, all Stark children with Stark parents look like Starks, don’t they? And your heir, Robb, must have been conceived between Cat and Edmure (if not Brynden Blackfish himself!) while you were away, fighting for Robert. Oh, I hope marrying your Sansa to my Joff wont end up going badly, given how she is also the product of Tully incest!”

Ned: “But Robert’s bastards are all Baratheon-clones!”

Cersei: “Just like Jon Snow, you mean? Maybe you should father a few more bastards to test your theory, though, of course, your honesty might be questionable after that.”

Because, seriously, it is Tully-looking Sansa who makes Ned realize that the Baratheon children are very Cersei, and not much Robert.

Also, the only female Baratheon ancestor whose hair-color we know of is a Targaryen, aka, a blonde, and Robert’s grandmother, and a black-haired great-grandmother. And the Great Houses tended to marry the Houses in their lands, and the Dondarrions and Selmys we meet are either reddish blondes or grayed blondes, and I think both those houses are likely in the Baratheon family tree on both the Baratheon and Estermont sides. Oh, and Renly Baratheons green eyes that are green-blue meaning that there should be green eyes in their family tree as well. If it’s from Cassana Estermont, Joff, Tom and Cella have 3/4 grandparents with green eyes like them...

However, while it is unlikely that all children would be blondes, it would be perfectly possible for them to be so, just as how Cat birthed two “Tullies” before she got a Stark girl.

Yes, I know that genetics aren’t supposed to work in Westeros like the real world (and even then I simplified it a lot), but that means that Jon Arryn should suspect Catelyn of stepping outside her marriage as much as Cersei (after all, it is about the heirs; Joffrey and Robb, rather than any other children). Or there are literally different biological rules between Starks and Lannisters, in which case they should not be in the same story as the same species.
