DECK PROFILE: Dark Magician Rising
Hey guys (and/or gals, if anyone who eventually subscribes to this blog is actually a GIRL!) and welcome to my first Deck Profile blog.
Basically, this is how each Deck Profile blog works:
1. I blab on about the deck a bit and give you a general overview on the whole thing.
2. I then go through ALL the cards in the deck, with LOTS of pretty pictures!
3. I talk about some of the combos in this deck.
SO! Without further ado, here's my Deck Profile blog for my Spellcaster's deck - Dark Magician Rising!
Ever since the game was created in 1999 (as the TGC and NOT the manga or anime), I've always had a favourite monster of mine - Dark Magician. Sure, nowadays he pretty much 'sucks' in comparison to other Level 7 Normal Monsters with a relatively average 2500 attack points (*cough* Elemental HERO Neos *cough*). Anyway, I've always loved playing this card at every opportunity I had. And, as time went on and introduced cards like Dark Magician Girl, Skilled Dark Magician, Dark Sage and Dark Magician of Chaos to name but a few, I couldn't help but get excited every time new Dark Magician support cards were introduced. So, you could probably understand when I got overly excited when they brought out that Spellcaster's Structure Deck way back in '06 - Spellcaster's Judgement - which, in my opinion, kicked some serious ass without any additions.
So, this deck is based around the Dark Magician, summoning it, and making use of all his cool 'tricks'.
So, here is the deck, we'll start with Monsters. With every Deck Profile I'll be doing, I'll be doing the Main Deck categorically and alphabetically. Then they would all be followed by the Extra Deck, in the same manner of organisation. Here we go!
Breaker the Magical Warrior
Elemental HERO Prisma (x3)
Skilled Dark Magician (x2)
Magical Citadel of Endymion
Now that THAT part of the blog is done (seriously, it took AGES to do!), let's move onto a few combos. Most of these are purely based on the luck of the initial draw, which I'd say is the only weakness to this deck, and my ultimate weakness as a player of the game, I rely too much on luck of the draw. Anyway, combos!
First is using Summoner Monk's effect to bring out Skilled Dark Magician. Discard a Spell you either don't need, don't want or simply cannot use, and Special Summon Skilled Dark Magician. This is where the lucky part comes in: you need to have Terraforming and Field Barrier to pull this combo off. First, activate Terraforming to fetch Magical Citadel of Endymion, placing 1 Spell Counter on Skilled Dark. Next, activate Citadel - counter number 2 for Skilled Dark. Then, activate Field Barrier, protecting your Citadel from harm. This could work REALLY well if you're going against the new version of the Water Deck (Realm of the Sea Emperor) or Gates of the Underworld, which would rely on Field Spells. So, after Barrier's activation, that's Spell Counter Numero Tres for Skilled Dark. Now comes the fun part, Tribute Skilled Dark while it has 3 counters on it to Special Summon the card of the hour - Dark Magician! Then take it from there!
Next is using Elemental HERO Prisma's effect to 'clone' Dark Magician. Prisma works it's 'magic' (get it, 'cos he's a Warrior and not a Spellca-ah f**k it, never mind!) by doing the following:
By revealing Dark Paladin in your Extra Deck and sending 1 Dark Magician from the Deck to the Graveyard, Prisma's legal name-change is complete, and can waltz around the Yu-Gi-Oh! world as Dark Magician. Then, you can do a few things: a) Tribute Prisma to Special Summon Dark Eradicator Warlock; b) Activate Super Polymerization while both Prisma and Buster Blader are face-up on your side of the field. Alternatively, you could do THIS particular move with Buster Blader, but, if you decide to use a card like Solidarity, then it's not the best move to make. Either way, a quicker way to bring out your Paladin, and start destroying your opponent's Dragon deck; and, c) Activating cards like Dark Magic Attack or Thousand Knives could be really useful if you just have Prisma on the field, or, are about to bring out Eradicator or Paladin.
Lastly is a relatively simple style of play within this deck - Spell Counters. As long as you can bring out Skilled Dark to play out Terraforming, Citadel and Barrier (in that order), you're already on the right track. Cards like Breaker the Magical Warrior, Skilled Dark, Royal Magical Library, Pitch-Black Power Stone and Citadel are all going to play important parts in a potentially game/match-winning card - Mega Ton Magical Cannon. By removing 10 Spell Counters from you side of the field, you can annihilate your opponent's field....COMPLETELY. It's a horribly overlooked and under-appreciated card to use in a deck like this. This works if Dark Magic Attack fails. The beauty of this particular part of the deck, is that it not only helps build up 'ammo' for Cannon, but it can help your draw power with the help of Citadel, which removes counters to activate OTHER cards effects, which can be REALLY useful.
Well, that wraps this blog up! Hope you enjoyed it, and stick around, 'cos in the next few days there will HOPEFULLY be a video up on YouTube of this very deck profiling, and in the next few days AFTER that, there will be another video and a blog of deck profiles, the next one being my Dark World Deck!
