Trying to decipher what is meant by HEAVY is like one of those geometry games where you’re tasked with indicating how many triangles you see in a puzzle of interrelated triangles put before you. But unlike those games, HEAVY works to get at how many interrelated struggles you’re able to recognize in the account Kiese has laid out. Struggles with weight, struggles with food, struggles with home, struggles with truth, struggles with growing up, struggles with growing up in the deep south, struggles with growing up around boys who have suffered some of the same struggles as you, struggles with race, struggles with women, struggles with men who struggle with women, struggles with how not to become those men, struggles with becoming some kind of man when that kind of man is all you see, struggles with those few women who see you as “a good dude,” struggles between family, struggles to stay family in spite of the struggles that seem set on tearing you apart, struggles to stay whole when everything seems intent on breaking you, struggles to be honest when a lie goes down so much easier for everyone involved, struggles with being transparent when you had always gone for invisible, struggles to be invisible when your SIZE won’t let you hide. WOW, what a book! How do you call something so heartbreaking BRILLIANT? The writing is stunning, the vulernability on display is breathtaking and the delivery is masterful. There were times that I forgot I was reading a memoir because it reads like the perfect novel. ⁣ ⁣ Kiese Laymon delves into many “heavy” topics -- the struggle of living life as a man in a black body, his weight, abuse, sex, racism, gambling, education, friendships & family dynamics. I don't think there was a topic that was not touched in this deeply raw memoir. ⁣ ⁣ Laymon writes in second person, addressing himself to his mother unearthing secrets and lies that they buried throughout their lives.⁣ ⁣ Put this on your TBR list. I’m recommending it to everyone!! ⁣ ⁣ Rating: 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷 out of 5 Cheers!⁣ ⁣ ✨ What to drink: I highly recommend a big & bold (heavy) Cabernet Sauvignon to go with this book. I never post like this but now is a time to do I sometimes say that I am sexist but I usually I say it to describe another oppression like when I speak about racism.
