Another character challenge.
Inktober 2018 25 - Kimigiku (Hakuoki) or Kikuzuki to close friends
Copic pen and markers on recycled paper
“Kikuzuki beached in Purvis Bay, Florida Island, Solomon Islands, in 1944. She had been sunk on 4 May 1942, when USS Yorktown (CV-5) planes raided the Tulagi area, and was salvaged by the U.S. Navy in 1943.”

I finally found out Kosuzu’s real name!
Remember back when I ended my ramble on historical accuracy in Hakuoki with a question about Kosuzu’s real name (because most of I know of Reimeiroku is from the anime, and I don’t remember if they ever mentioned it there)?
It’s Shizu (静), meaning “Tranquil/Serene/Silence”.
I also found out how Kikuzuki (Kimigiku) writes her real name: 菊月; Chrysanthemum Moon.
Just in case anyone else was interested.
Oh, and look at how Shizu’s name ends in the “zu” syllable just like Kosuzu and how Kikuzuki’s names (her nickname being Okiku, “O” being a positive prefix often used for women and girls in the Edo period) all feature “chrysanthemum”. In Kimigiku, the first K is softened but it is the same word/kanji.
This is actually a very good trick in fiction to make a single character’s multiple names easier to remember for the audience.
With Kosuzu there is also that Ko- is a common prefix (it is more common as a suffix nowadays) meaning “little/child” (see names like Kohana “little flower”, Koharu “little spring” and so on, depending, of course, on the kanji being used) and that the -suzu part the name is the most identifiable element, and you have Shizu and Suzu start with syllables next to one another on a kana chart plus having the same number of syllables.
Character challenge again. Okita’s referring to this.
Hakumyu Lives and the absence of Amagiri.
