On the afternoon of October 29th, 2013, Jonathan Estela (11) was lured out of his house inside a community in the city of Maldonado, Uruguay. Two of his friends, aged 14 and 11, invited him to go hunt birds with them. That’s why Jonathan didn’t think it was strange the two boys were carrying knives and machetes.
14 and 11 led Jonathan to a secluded area and attacked him with the machete. They hit him in the head and face, but that didn’t kill him. Jonathan managed to escape and hide, but the boys convinced him the scuffle was over and to come out. When he did, they stabbed him five times in the torso, beat him up and made sure he was dead this time before throwing his body in an artesian well and leaving to play a soccer match.
As if all that wasn’t horrible enough, with them was a 5 year old girl, the step sister of 14, who witnessed the crime. They instructed her that, in case they were found out and arrested, she had to claim Jonathan had tried to sexually abuse her and the two boys had come in her defense.
When Jonathan’s body was found after midnight, it didn’t take long for police to get to 14 and 11, since several witnesses had seen the dead boy with them. Initially they pretended to know nothing, but the 5 year old girl ended up confessing what she’d seen. The boys admitted the crime, and said it had been premeditated, and among the reasons they mentioned disagreements when they were playing.
Both boys showed several psychological issues in later testing, including neglect from their families and no remorse for the crime. Both were sent to different institutions and shelters, and the case sparked an intense debate in the country over what to do with children who kill, since they can’t be tried there at that age.
Cayetano Santos Godino, also known as “Petiso Orejudo”, is one of the most cruel and infamous serial killers in the history of Argentina, and terrorized the country at the beginning of the XX century.
He was only 7 years old when he tried to murder a two year old; the next year he had another unsuccessful attempt against a toddler. Both times he was caught and set free because of his age.
His first murder was in 1906, when he was 10 years old. He grabbed Maria Rosa Face (3) and buried her alive. Police only found out when he confessed to this crime years later, but her body was never found.
In January 1912 he strangled and beat to death Arturo Laurora (13). Two months later, he burned Rayna Vainicoff (5) alive. His last murder happened in December that year, when he used a rock to bury a nail into the temple of Gesualdo Giordano (3).
Police caught him after he showed up at Gesualdo’s wake to see if he still had the nail in his head.
Aside from these four murders, he tried to kill at least another 7 kids.
Once he was taken to prison, Cayetano continued his streak by torturing and killing pigeons. He died in 1944 under confusing circumstances. It is believed that other prisoners beat him up after he killed a cat that belonged to one of them.
