Life is cyclical. Chains are inherited Just as magic is Even though one is more easily found Than the other. Today I was asked what I represented And rather than saying women and my grandmothers and the love I carry from them everyday, I said ownership. Weird, to use a word that brings back ancestral pain and distant memories of when we did not have autonomy over ourselves but a necessary reminder. I said ownership because as women we have been taught to be humble, to be shy, to not claim the power we have or the skill we excel at, or the treasure we are. So today I manifest the ownership of myself and my talents unabashedly. Feeling exposed, watched, caged In the country That supposedly leads The free world. So many people say Well it could be worse, Other countries are in worse positions, But be careful with that. Why should I compare a developed and privileged country to one who is struggling and "undeveloped" Typically because of the very actions taken by the more powerful one? She was a fisher of men looking to see Who would catch the bait And give her the love She was hungry for. But nothing caught on Until she realized She was fish, food, and freedom. And the bait to her heart wasn't between her legs But between her lips Where words blossomed to let her heal and all the other fish were lucky enough just to sit and hear her speak and see the water that poured out of her That quenched their thirst And gave them life. She's a fisher of light Deep sea sights Navigating Away From what chains her: Herself. -Pisces - -We fail to realize how much we set ourselves up for the same old shit. Self imposed chains of habit that are hard to break. I remember the day My mom became a citizen- Of this country, sure, but also of this world. With a piece of paper She regained her identity and adopted a new one Freedom From that last name that haunted her The one that is attached to mine Independence in a country Where that is the ultimate goal Her name A familiar one that was inherited from someone who never belonged to her either Was hers again. Identity, what a weight you are to those who don't have you but look for you In letters and papers and physical features of unfamiliar faces. On this day my mom regained what bit of that she had And she boasted Proud Unlike her perpetually humble self And for the first time In a long time She Marched With her head up high Repeating her new found right to vote. "Ahora puedo votar" An illusion perhaps Of some say in this country And in her life Which has never gone As intended But it was a right she fought for in between the two jobs and the two kids Late at night with the lamp on and her children by her side Rehearsing The states The capitals How her name sounds in English. She fought for it And i witnessed the battle being won.
