See Issue X: Kilnfire #2
For my second arc for Kilnfire I'm just gonna do a straight Adventure, the standard superheroing arc. We begin by tossing two cards of different suits from the blank deck into the discard pile - a 5 of Hearts and a 6 of Diamonds. We have no cards in limbo, so none get moved from limbo to the discard.
Then I draw four cards and assign two of them. I get the Broken Giant (K of Clubs), the Backyard Studio (8 of Clubs), Body of Clay (6 of Spades) and the 2 of Diamonds which remains blank.
We're gonna assign the 2 of Diamonds to "This principle demanded you act." Specifically, we are marking it with 'Cruelty cannot be allowed to stand!' and say that the inciting incident here involves some goons driving a bunch of homeless folks out of their camp...
And assign the Broken Giant to "This is where the incident took place." Noah was looking for the mysterious cave where he got his powers when he found that a bunch of goons were breaking up a homeless encampment and being huge jerks about it. He had to act, even if he didn't know why they were doing it.
We don't know who the villain is behind this yet, after all. But Kilnfire uses his powers to scare and drive off the goons, maybe gets some fighting in, and prevents the camp from being destroyed. The goons don't end up revealing who sent them, and the true villain was not present, having sent their minions to do it.
We draw two cards for the twist, and may assign one or both of them. We get Justice And Mercy Are Inseparable (K of Diamonds) and the unmarked King of Spades. I'm just going to assign the King of Spades to "This was essential to uncovering the truth." It's unmarked, so we mark it with a way Kilnfire can use his powers to uncover information. I'm going to say that he realizes he can reshape himself in ways that disguise him - now, he can change colors and hide with his transformations. I mark the card with "Transformative Disguise".
We also have to decide what Kilnfire learned from using this. By disguising himself as a number of animals and exploring the city near the park, he found that the goons were not, as he'd initially assumed, part of a local gang or private security firm. Instead, they were associated with a strange self-help program!
We draw two more cards, and can assign one or both. This gets us Grandpa Larry Stein (6 of Hearts) and the blank 2 of Hearts. We assign the 2 of Hearts to: the villain is doing this for someone else. We don't mark anything here, but we know that.
Infiltrating the self-help program, Kilnfire learns that it is being run by a man who seems driven by a burning need. He is trying to find something on the Broken Giant: an arcane nexus, which he intends to use to resurrect his dead son. He believes that the homeless encampment was on top of the arcane nexus, and was siphoning its energy unintentionally to allow the local homeless to thrive in the park.
We take the blank 2 of Hearts and mark with this supervillain's name: Desolace, who will do absolutely anything to regain what he has lost. He is taking advantage of his eager, malleable followers to build up a power base and prepare for the arcane rituals he thinks can capture a dead soul and restore it to a body. He is the arc's Villain and we set him aside.
I'm off to dinner with my dad, so that's where I'll pause for now - that's probably a solid issue or two into this arc.
