some days it’s tough being an adult

we spend our whole childhood being trained how to be children, until one day we’re hurled unprepared into the status of grown-up, hoping nobody notices we’re just pretending to know what we’re doing

work was hard. people are mean. i forgot to go grocery shopping again

in the cupboard i spot a packet of bourbon creams. without thinking i say it aloud:

“Hello, you. I hope you’re good!”

and in my mind i hear those friendly words again in her voice, the gregarious and honest tones of yorkshire, with boundless energy and offered earnestly and without reservation as if on some sacred quest to bolster the spirits of every passer-by

and i see in my mind the kind and genuine bright-eyed smile that never stays defeated for very long, and it fills my heart like a warm cup of tea when i realise that deep down, even if you’ve never met, she genuinely does hope you’re good

and it makes me feel like maybe being an adult won’t be so tough after all
